Where to Ski and Watch April's Solar Eclipse

"Described as an authentic alpine village ski resort sitting close to the centerline, Mont Sutton will get 3 minutes and 29 seconds of totality at 15:36 EDT and is specifically mentioned as a destination being planned for the eclipse." - Jamie Carter Jamie Carter Jamie Carter is an experienced science, technology, and travel journalist and the editor of WhenIsTheNextEclipse.com. Sutton Mountain is one of those places that reminds you why hiking is worth the effort. If you enjoy trails that combine fresh mountain air, peaceful forests, and beautiful lake views, this area really delivers. I came here looking for a simple hike, but the experience felt much more special than I expected. The trail climbs gently at first, moving through quiet woods where you can hear nothing but the wind and the birds. As you go higher, small openings start to appear between the trees, giving you little previews of the mountains around you. It’s the kind of hike where the scenery slowly builds, and every few minutes you feel rewarded with something new. One of the highlights for me was reaching the sections where you can see the lakes from above. The water looks calm and clear, and the combination of the lake below and the mountains in the distance creates an incredible view. It’s the perfect spot to stop, take a breath, drink some water, and just enjoy the moment. You don’t need to be a professional hiker to appreciate it — the trail is manageable, and the payoff is completely worth it. As you continue toward the top, the view opens even more. You get a full panorama of the surrounding landscape, with lakes, rolling hills, and deep forests all in one frame. It’s the kind of view that makes you feel small in the best way. If you’re someone who loves hiking with real scenic rewards, mountains, lakes, and peaceful nature, Sutton Mountain is definitely worth visiting. It’s a beautiful trail that gives you everything: a good walk, clean air, and unforgettable views.

Excellent place to hike on during the summer. Steep but not too challenging, and the summit offers stunning views of the surrounding hills. There's a campground on top too. There's no entrance fee if you're only hiking. Alaric recommends 👐 ⛰️

Usually go here in the winter but decided to check it out in the summer. Can take a ride up the hill to see nice scenery. The top of hill isn’t as well organized as Mont Tremblant hill is, but still we had a nice time. If you like hiking or mountain biking then this is the place for you.

The picture doesn't justify the beauty of this landscape. If you love nature and activities like hiking or zip lining then this is the right place for you. Recommended..

I went pretty early and the colour seems to not be peak yet. But they have free music every weekend on Fall. There is a ride/gondola that can take you to the top for extra fees. The place has skiing, hiking, mountain bikes and many other activities. Plenty of parking.

Took our friend up the mountain during summer weekday. A very nice outing. Beautiful scenery. Not a friendly set up at top of hill say like Mont Tremblant hill. But worth the visit.

We had a very nice experience with our friends. We also saw people's camping with a nice setup of fire 🔥 while we hiked till the highest points. View from this point was magnificent and the lovely bar. In addition, free EV charging with free parking. I love to visit more and more.

My girlfriend and I had an amazing time at Mont Sutton today! From the moment we arrived, the experience was seamless. The traffic staff were friendly and efficient, helping us find parking with ease. The exceptional customer service didn’t stop there. While exploring the mountain, we had the pleasure of meeting Richard, a staff member who kindly took the time to show us all the runs that were open and provided a great overview of the mountain layout. His knowledge and kindness made our experience so much better. It was clear that he genuinely wanted us to have a fantastic day, and his efforts are highly commendable. Between the welcoming staff and the great skiing, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Mont Sutton is a wonderful resort, and we’ll definitely be returning soon!

Yelp
Mont Sutton is a mountain that caters to the more experienced skier. The runs can be narrow and steep in certain places. When there is fresh snow you will have an awesome day on the slopes, however on icy days it can be tough to ski. This is also a really good hill to come to if you like skiing glades because there is plenty of that. The runs of similar skill level all seem to be grouped together in one place. The lifts are distinguished by number and in general the higher the lift number the more difficult the terrain that it will lead to. If you can't ski at least blue squares then you should avoid the summit. That being said if you are comfortable on these runs or black diamonds then definitely go up there because that is where the best runs seem to be. As far as the cafeteria goes they have one of the better ones out there. The food is for the most part reasonably priced and quite good when compared to other ski resorts. There are three chalets at different elevations so when lunchtime rolls around you will have your pick of where to eat. When the snow has just fallen then definitely come to Sutton to take advantage of the powder. It is a great mountain offering up challenging skiing and the experience as a whole is always pretty good here.

Yelp
Mont Sutton is a charming, old fashioned, and fairly challenging ski area. About half the mountain and almost everything off the top is expert terrain. Trails labeled as glades feature widely spaced trees. I noted evidence that they did get a groomer into a blue glade, but for the most part the glades are bumped. Double blacks marked tree skiing have much tighter trees and feature tight chutes. The only high speed lift goes about 3/4 the way up and serves mostly blue terrain. About half the blues are glades. So if you want to spend the day on perfectly groomed slopes, you'd be happier elsewhere. But if you, like I, enjoy going off the beaten path, you'll like it here. Off the mountain one will find a small, quiet, and authentic town of Sutton. I wasn't looking for nightlife, but had I looked, I doubt I would have found much. (There was a band at the 400m lodge Friday afternoon, but I don't know how long they played.) If, on the other hand, you are looking for a romantic dinner, you will be pleased. Book early though, 'cause places do fill up. Another note on restaurants is I didn't find any with kid menus. Some are better than others to take kids, but I didn't find any I would really call kid friendly.

Yelp
Sutton is a mount for advanced skiers. As the chair numbers grow the slopes become steeper and the glades narrower. Do your snow dance and on a powder day Sutton is haven. For those who don't feel comfortable with advanced terrain, the ski trails under chairs one and two are good for practice. Another part of the heavenly experience is to stop for lunch in the rustic mountain top chalet at altitude 840 for soup or chilly in a bread bowl and warm up around the fire place. Don't hesitate to visit Sutton during the summer. Note there is an entrance fee of 5 dollars for the nature reserve. Even hiking may be advanced when climbing up the top of the mountain, the reward is the best view of Vermont and UNY mountains. The chalets are closed off the ski season, but if in need for some brew after hiking, the little town of Sutton offers few nice places to relax.

The Jay Peak of Quebec: An old school ski resort with nice trails, including lots of excellent glades, and reasonable lift ticket prices.

Yelp
We love Mont Sutton! As first time skiers, this place has made my family's skiing experience one of a kind. The staff and people who ski here are nice, helpful and very friendly. It is definitely a family friendly ski lodge and it doesn't seem overwhelmingly crowded. We've been here twice in the last 3 weeks and would highly recommend it. My sons ages 3 and 7 both have done the classes. They have enjoyed their instructures and have picked up skiing fairly fast. They have gone from knowing nothing about skiing to being able to go down the green trails on their own. My 3 year old enjoys going to the daycare after his classes. The place is clean and did I mention the staff is amazing and super helpful. The views are pretty impressive too. This place has become my family's skiing destination and we are loving the memories we are creating here. The 5 hour drive is totally worth it. J'aime Mont Sutton! Je vais revenier!
