Picked this place out for our first meal while driving over to Yellowstone and it was great! Even in bigger cities you'd be hard pressed to find better stuff than Montana Ale Works, so it was the perfect start to our vacation. The moment you step in you're met with a humongous warehouse with the look of a modern casual bar but with 100% casual feel. The ambiance sets the stage for an excellent and interesting dining experience, where both the food and service take center stage.
Staff were quite friendly and energetic from start to finish. Questions were answered clearly and for the dessert 'menu' they even brought over the whole platter with all of the options assembled for you to see! Really embracing the whole show and tell thing. Fun experience and easy-going atmosphere.
=Tater Tots - 5/5:
Not your typical tots to be sure and are much closer to falafel in appearance. But hey, don't judge too hard because they tasted great regardless. The tots boasted an unusual, creamy interior, elevating them beyond the ordinary. The blend of peppers and potato added a delightful complexity to each bite, making them a standout appetizer.
=Elk Burger - 5/5:
Despite the inherent gaminess of elk, the burger was supremely well-balanced, with a creamy and savory blend that harmonized beautifully. The elk, slightly crumbly in texture due to its leanness, still offered a pleasing mouthfeel without an overpowering flavor profile. For real, this was both a blessing and a curse to have this burger because it was excellently balanced and quite well conceived. The bad part was of course we'd then compare all the future elk we had to this! Alas.
=Beef Bison Curry - 5/5:
The Beef Bison Curry was a delightful exploration of flavors, featuring a nice creamy and tart Thai curry. The dish, while rich and flavorful, leaned heavily into the gaminess of bison. It's a bold choice that might not be for everyone, but for those seeking an adventurous twist on curry, it delivers a unique and satisfying experience.
=Turtle Cheesecake - 5/5:
The dining experience concluded on a sweet note with the Turtle Cheesecake. Slightly springy and thinner than your typical cheesecake, it leaned into a heavy caramel flavor and tastes close to a denser iteration of a Japanese cheesecake. Solid note that doesn't ring too sweet either.
