How to Plan a Ski Trip to Big Sky Resort in Montana

"A casual, lively bar in the mountain village’s exchange complex with more than 30 beers on tap (including Montana-brewed IPAs), a burger menu offering six options—each available with local Angus, bison, grilled chicken, or a vegan Beyond patty—and frequent live music that creates a social après atmosphere for skiers and locals." - Nina Ruggiero Nina Ruggiero Travel + Leisure Senior Editorial Director Nina Ruggiero oversees T+L's award-winning travel content across digital platforms. We ate at Montana Jack's a few times on our trip and each time they did not disappoint! I put Atmosphere at a 4 because it was too loud for me when they had live music. Day 1/dinner: Jack's Bison Burger with salad, topped with a pint of Moose Drool. While the burger was standard, it was cooked as desired and the bison patty was flavorful and not heavy. The Moose Drool is a brown ale that was a little too smooth going down. Day 2/lunch: by recommendation of our taxi driver, I enjoyed their chili with sourdough grilled cheese. Oh that chili! Do many flavors and textures, and filling! I could have done with just a half grilled cheese because it was a nice paring. Day 3/dinner: I tried their veggie wrap (forgot to take a picture of the menu). It is hot wrap filled with a whole lot of deliciousness! Be careful though, that balsamic vinegar is hot! I chose the sweet potato fries, they took were delicious! As shown, paired the meal with another Moose Drool, because it is that good! A quick shout out to their wait staff who were all so friendly and helpful!

Food is ok and the atmosphere is nice. They sometimes have live music. It’s nice to have an honest meal up here. Burgers are pretty good, fried are too salty, and food is sometimes a bit cold. Beers are great. Brussels sprouts had too much honey on them and were too salty. We spent $20-30 per meal.

I have been coming here for a couple years but for some reason this year has been an utter disappointment. We used to love coming here for lunch at Big Sky because the food has always been incredible. There is always a wait though we never minded as it was worth it and there are a few gift shops to browse next door. This most recent visit the hostess did not properly put us on the waitlist or didn't text/follow up when our table was ready and we ended up waiting double what she has quoted. The food this time around was incredibly bad and they have clearly made some changes to the menu for cost-cutting. The Montana Burger which used to be my go to order had a name change and instead of fresh avocado it now has a disgusting artificially colored avocado paste. The chili was equally bad and looked like it had been sitting for hours before it was ladled into the bowl. Prior visits this was one of my favorite items on the menu because of its cohesiveness and hearty freshness. Its very sad when a great establishment loses its shine and looks like Montana Jack’s is just another example of this unfortunately.

Google
Could be great but needs help. Fabulous old bar. Food, not so great (it's not a good sign when the staff brings in food truck takeout for themselves). Got to listen to the tat covered bartender talk about getting blackout drunk. Classy.

Google
Loved coming here for lunch breaks during skiing for some drinks and grub. Chill vibe and pretty good service. They certainly don’t skimp on portions and the quality/value was quite good, especially for being immediately juxtaposed to the slopes.

Google
Let me preface this by saying our waitress was great. Very attentive and friendly and helpful with the menu. Beer selection was top notch. That's where it ends. I don't expect much from a slope side restaurant, but this one bills itself as a Craft Burger bar. Ordered two Bison Burgers (with huckleberry compote). Wife ordered medium rare. I ordered medium. Not even sure why they ask because they came out grey and overcooked and all juice was gone. They came to almost $30 each, too! Also, the fries and sweet potato fries can only be described as stale. Next time I'll stick to the beer.

Google
Cool atmosphere. Would be fun to be there for live music. Friendly staff but very busy. Over priced food. If the price matched the quality that would be a different story. Everyone at our table had a well done dry burger. Wasn’t worth the price.

Google
Great country mountain vibes, good beer selection, and delicious nachos! What more could you ask for?

Yelp
Montana burger is a decent spot to go for lunch. The burgers are better than a typical Resort burger. They were a little on the small side for approx $25 but I get it, it's a resort. The waitress was also very nice.
google avatar

Cammi P.

Yelp
Did someone say huckleberry and bison? Two of my personal favorite things that makes the trip to Montana worth it just for that. The selection of burger options in unmatched at Montana Jack, which located right on the resort and in the main square. While service was slower, the food was worth the wait.
google avatar

Skyler P.

Yelp
First stop when I visited big sky and really enjoyed the comfort food here. Good drinks and great bites. We started with some fries with a huckleberry dipping sauce that was so good! The burgers were cooked perfect and I really liked the variety of options you could choose from. Service was a bit slow but it was also a busy night and our server was great!
google avatar

Yelp
Overall excellent spot for wings and burgers! The Jack salad was alright, but a large portion that could stand alone as its own meal. The wings were perfectly fried and amazing BBQ sauce. The burgers were also decently sized and came with crispy fries. The overall vibe is great for apres ski but I think they may be a bit understaffed. Highly recommend this spot.
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
Ali is probably the nicest person employed by the resort because everyone else sucks (*cough* ski lift operators *cough*). Food and drinks were decent for lodge food and prices were unreasonable. I would vote this a good option for mid ski lunch break! It does get busy though!
google avatar

Dennis Q.

Yelp
Came here for lunch after hitting the slopes. Place gets busy and we got lucky in grabbing the last seats at the bar. The service and food were great. The bartender was wonderful and she was very nice and communicated at all times to let you know she didn't forget about you.
google avatar

Pam H.

Yelp
Came here twice for lunch and it's the perfect spot if you're only skiing half day: the portions are large and the food is hearty - not sure I would be able to ski after eating here because you leave FULL. First visit we both had burgers and they're YUGE and delicious. This time we tried the chili and chicken sandwiche and those were really good as well. A note about the chili, it's very heavy on the beans. Personally would have liked the bean to meat ratio to be a little smaller. Also no sour cream and could have used more cheese and scallions on top. I'm sure I could have asked for more but I didn't want to wait to eat because I was starving. Service was great both times. I like the vibe and the decor - very fitting for a ski lodge restaurant.

Yelp
What a great burger! Totally legit, with the fried egg just perfect! I should probably write more, but stoked on the burger! Okay, draft beer list is solid and local. Fries were nice and hot. After being unimpressed with the $25 burger at Summit's Carabiner, this one will be remembered as twice as good, and served hot. Okay, now we have to talk about the noise. There's some stage in the corner and apparently "setting up for tomorrow" means blasting your patron's eardrums out with random bangs, screeches, sound snippits, and feedback. Just, no? Maybe do that after hours? Unless you want tinnitus and PTSD, don't sit anywhere close to the (empty) stage. Not a fan. Minus one star.

Yelp
A perfect spot for a classic après experience or a cozy dinner. After a long day of travel and skiing, Montana Jack's is exactly what we were looking for a casual dinner. We tried the Tangy Bang Burger with Sweet Potato Fries and the Fried Brussel Sprouts, both of which were tasty and hearty. The next day we wanted to enjoy the après DJ so we ordered the Nachos to-go, really appreciate having this option since Montana Jack itself doesn't have a patio. Four stars only because it was a little pricy, but about what you would expect for on-resort dining.
google avatar

Yelp
Located in the middle of the Ski Village Center, Montana Jack is a large bar/restaurant with good food and drink right on the village plaza in the center of all the action pre-ski, mid-ski and apres ski. The food is good, portions are generous, the drinks are strong and the prices are affordable. Service is quick and efficient and live entertainment is offered several nights each week.
google avatar

Jeremy J.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and fun staff. Food was really good. I had the Nachos and they were great. Definitely a great place to hang out with friends after a day of skiing.
google avatar

Edward W.

Yelp
Stayed at Big Sky for a few days for snowboarding and this was my go to place for beers and food. Ordered The Bae multiple times and it was always consistently delicious. Another thing is if you want to try Bison patty, it just costs an extra $2. Large beer selection as well! A flight of 4 beers costs $10, which felt quite reasonable. Prices are definitely steep but you pay for the convenience.
google avatar

Rich G.

Yelp
fun place for apres ski. The salads were great. good kids menu. small wine list. friendly service. fun atmosphere after a good day of skiing. Small stage for a live acoustic act.
google avatar

DK N.

Yelp
BEST BLOODY MARY EVER! The best Bloody Mary I ever tasted! The food is amazing as well; we've been seated in no time (considering the busy ski resort lunch time) the prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Sweet potatoes fries and onion rings were served right away and sauces were nice. Our burgers were big, full of flavor and we didn't mind the grease from the big bites! Desert: we tried only brownie marshmallow thingy, but will pass next time(still won't take any stars off bc of it) Stop by, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
I came here with my love on our ski trip in late March 2022. Welcoming place and VERY busy (given it was a Tuesday). They have tons of beers on tap to try. Service was super fast. Our server, Jacob was amazing. He was quick and friendly and helpful. I had the vanilla coffee porter. It was okay 3/5. Not as flavorful as I expected. The Capone oatmeal stout on the other hand was amazing!!! Totally a 5/5. I actually had to order a second taster of those. The cider was yum! It had a perfect crisp flavor! I'd give it a 5. The sweet potato waffle fries with the huckleberry sauce were DA BOMB!!! Totally recommend. Get them and share them. They are plenty. I will come back and try out more within the next couple of days and update the review.

Yelp
Popular place for all ages. They don't take reservations. Friendly staff, although our server was a bit overwhelmed being holiday weekend and short staffed. But she was friendly and checked on us enough that we were able to ask for more water/ketchup/dressing without having to wait too long. For drinks, we had Wildrye Mule, $14, ginger beer, fresh lime, choice of Wild Rye Distillery libation: vodka, cherry vodka, 5 drops bourbon, ramsdell silver rum, or old tom gin. We had it with the 5 drops bourbon. Very good and refershing! For starters, we had their Brewmaster Onion Rings, $10, beer-battered with siracha-ranch. The rings were crispy and delicious. They weren't greasy at all. We all had burgers which are served in fresh brioche bun, pickle, choice of fries and coleslaw: - Jack Burger, $16, cheese, LTO, house sauce, with fries -- good burger, fries were crispy and not oily at all. - Tangy Bang Burger, $17, smoked gouda, chopped bacon, jalapeño jam, garlic aioli, with fries -- the person who ordered this preferred the Jack Burger mainly because the Tangy Bang Burger was too salty. - Mushroom & Swiss, $17, mushroom sauce, swiss cheese, with coleslaw. The coleslaw was good, but nothing to rave about. The burger was delicious! I loved the mushroom and mushroom sauce with the swiss cheese. I like the mushroom and sauce so much that I ate it all...and left most of the burger (not because it wasn't good, but because I was full....ate too much of the onion rings!). Yes, it's pretty pricey for bar food, but if you're staying at the resort with no transportation nor the inkling to uber/taxi to town, then it's captive audience.

Yelp
Great burgers, three of us got different burgers, everyone very happy. One person got wings, he liked those too
google avatar

Alyssa L.

Yelp
Montana Jack was the perfect place to end our skiing day. The food portions were large and we definitely left feeling full and satisfied. Our server, Will, was attentive and helpful.

Heidi K.

Yelp
6:30 pm on a Saturday night, place was barely half full. Our server didn't come to greet us for over 20 minutes. Took over an hour to get food- service was very slow. 4 of 5 burgers were overcooked to the point of being charred. Server never came back to see how everything was.

Nicholas B.

Yelp
This place served my girlfriend raw chicken tenders that made her throw up. Besides that, service is astronomically slow, taking 20 minutes or more to check on us. Ambience is what you would expect for a slopeside restaurant. Burgers are great, stay away from the chicken.

Andrew

Yelp
Courtney Shay and Katie run a tight and attentive operation. Personable, professional, and fun. Best place for apres in Big Sky.

Thomas C.

Yelp
food was very salty but service was fantastic shout out my waiter. She was very helpful. The atmosphere was also decent and the view was nice.

Mike L.

Yelp
After a tough/icy day on the slopes, Montana Jack was the perfect spot to get our bearings back! We sat at the bar and grubbed some delicious appetizers along with a few pints from their eclectic menu. But honestly, what truly made the experience one to remember was the treatment we received from Katie! Friendly, honest, happy, interesting, fun, and genuinely positive. If we lived in the area ... being a regular patron would be very easy. Keep it going, Katie!
google avatar

Nadine B.

Yelp
I would recommend this business, but maybe with a different bartender. Also, the Buffalo wings were breaded -yuck! And I'm allergic! There's nothing on the menu to indicate they are breaded. The bartender Stephanie seemed much more interested in other (?). things than serving us, though she only had 5 customers. She forgot my sweet potato fries - we had to ask for them. She went over to the grill, picked up some random fries, ruffled through them with her fingers, and brought them over. Not only that, but they weren't sweet potato fries. And they were lightly breaded. Three strikes!

Yelp
Montana Jack is a favorite at the Big Sky Base!! Start with the Midas Brew, awesome!! Then dive into the Tangy Bang Burger with the jalapeño jam, smoked gouda, chopped bacon and garlic aioli!! Of course I chose French Fries for my side! The Tangy Bang is soooo good with that jalapeño jam, bacon and gouda!! The fries cooked to perfection nice crisp on the outside and excellent seasoning! Staff here are fantastic!! Easy 5 Stars !!
google avatar

Kirk S.

Yelp
Katie Miller is the best bartender at Big Sky! amazing personality, service and attitude!
google avatar

Dave V.

Yelp
The service was great and the price was fair. I got the Cobb salad that came with chicken and I have to say that was the worst chicken I've ever eaten. It was like dry sawdust, drier than sawdust by far. I can't believe any chef would let chicken like that leave the kitchen.

An M.

Yelp
good burgers which become infinitely better when you realize how starved for decent food big sky really is.
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
Appetizers and drinks after a cold day of hiking! The fried jalapeños on the nachos were a nice touch & the Buffalo wings were enough for two servings (even tasty reheated the next day)! A pretty long wait, as expected at a ski resort, but I would definitely recommend going, it's a fun environment and just simple, delicious apps.

Yelp
[852] 12/24/2018 Montana Jack is in a great location located in Big Sky where there are tons of hungry skiers. We stopped in for a bite after a full day of skiing. We were seated immediately and this place is packed. There is a huge bar with tons of high tables. Tons of regular tables. Looks like there is a small stage (perhaps for a band?). Our waitress was nice but super busy. Pretty much take our order and leave the bill. She could have come around a bit more. Kid had chicken fingers which he enjoyed. Hubby had a burger which he ate. I had the soup of the day which was the chicken and rice. Fresh shredded chicken breast. It was ok. The waitress offered a grilled cheese w/ my soup for an additional $3. Great deal. The grilled cheese was good but made me want tomato soup. Lol All in all the service was ok and food was OK. The décor is great. I will be back.
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
Trying to eat lunch here was a mad rush with a sign pointing to the "hostess" located nowhere and then an hour-long wait once we finally found the hostess. Tried again for dinner, actually got a seat, and was met with mediocre food and service. Just a mountain village bar.
google avatar

Andrea O.

Yelp
First dinner in Big Sky, very good experience. Burgers were done right, juicy and delicious. Daughter liked the chicken fingers but complained about the fries, which were a bit tough. She was right. All in all good experience.
google avatar

Elyse P.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. Had the Burger, chili and grilled cheese. The burger was salty, chili was cold and the tortilla strips were soggy. Grilled cheese was just ok.
google avatar

Andy C.

Yelp
Burgers were dry and overcooked. Fries and pickles were really good. Couldn't get our zoned out server to refill our waters to save our souls! She obviously didn't think we could afford dessert because she brought that check as soon as we finished eating without even a mention of apple pie or coffee. Place is nothing special so couldn't get more than that mediocre 3 stars. Would give 2 1/2 if I could.
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
There are so many good restaurants in Big Sky, near the ski resort, and Montana Jack is definitely up there. I consider it low-maintenance because it's basically bar food but the food is really good! I had a chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries and my husband had a burger. They have a great selection of beer also. As for service, the bartenders are very nice but they're very picky on where people sit. I guess it's because they're so busy they can't folks just strolling in grabbing a table near the bar. I recommend it but it gets pretty busy and it's kind of pricey for what you get.
google avatar

Sean k.

Yelp
This was probably the worst service at a restaurant I ever received. The chubby little dude with skinny jeans and diamond earring had an attitude right from the start. He was unfriendly, unhelpful, impatient and condescending. Poor communication skills. It was as if I came in to order food five minutes before closing. They weren't closing for another hour and half and barely anyone was in there. The dude was very high strung and was lacking skills in the people department. He messed up my order and then was acting as if it was my fault. The burger was good ( better be for 19 bucks) but no changes were allowed. Order has to be exactly what is on menu. The restaurant was loud and dirty. Good location.
google avatar

Vala S.

Yelp
3 stars at best. I was really looking forward to my Dilly burger. I even asked the waitress how do they prepare their meat and she said medium. My burger was well done, very dry, and extremely salty. Easy on the Salt chef!
google avatar

Khadijah H.

Yelp
It was my first time in Big Sky and I needed a warm meal after a long day skiing. The chili hit the spot! It was chunky and seasoned well. I definitely recommend this dish.
google avatar

Johnathan H.

Yelp
Service could be better, long long waits to see your waitress.. food was great, fries yummy and homemade tasting. Ranch dressing was awesome and boy were the burgers great!!!!!
google avatar

Khalid S.

Yelp
Excellent food and drink choices. Reasonable prices. Friendly staff. High marks for sustainability. All things that are foreign to me at ski resorts. These folks do it right. The BBQ beyond meat burger, veggie soup, grilled cheese sandwich, fries and salad were all great. Topped it with a dram of the locally distilled bourbon, and I was fully recharged for the slopes.

Shawn W.

Yelp
Aimee is the best bartender in big sky. Go see her now. She was so nice and so attentive.
google avatar

Gav J.

Yelp
Let's be real here, this is a great bar with nice service and a great beer choice. Eat here and plan to be solidly disappointed. The food is total crap. But drink and listen to music, you'll have a great time
google avatar

Sarah F.

Yelp
We have stopped in here for lunch every day while skiing. The wait for a table was long, but we found spots at the bar quickly. Katie and Tasha were our bartenders and they we're outstanding! Quick with a refill and amazing attitudes! Great time and great service!
google avatar

Stacie S.

Yelp
Great service, pub food was good, beer selection was great, fun vibe, family friendly. Only con is getting in - most evenings had 30-60 min wait with no reservations. Plan on waiting!!
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
I always enjoy stopping here for a pint of local beer and live music. Great after ski stop with a large selection of beer and local distillery drinks. Tonight i only stopped in for their Chicken & wild rice soup, it was delicious! Highly recommended.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
The food here is surprisingly tasty. The chili is amazing, pickle fries addictive, burgers fantastic, and so much more. Incredible selection of local beers too. We've been here several times now and have all enjoyed our selections each time. The only knock is the service speed. It's often busy here so it can take some time for a server to get to you. Having said that, once they do get to your table we've found them all to be nice, helpful, and attentive. It's just that first 3 to 5 to 10 minutes that might have you wondering. Past that though, great place to eat and enjoy some drinks at Big Sky.
google avatar

Jeff T.

Yelp
Our visit started out super crappy. Seated by hostess and a server wouldn't even speak to us go 45 minutes! They'd walk by us and not say a word. Super rude staff. We had to go chase down a couple of drinks at the bar and come back to the table. Unbelievable. Not like they were even busy, it was 11 am and the place was not even half full. We came back for lunch after the rush was over to get a bite to eat, told there was a 10 minute wait - ok. While we waited we grabbed a quick beer and sat at a high top table near the bar that was open while we waited. One of the servers who wouldn't give us the time of day earlier made sure to stop by THIS time and tell us we couldn't sit there because there's a wait list. Poor service. I told her we'd be sitting there until we were seated... BYE. When we were we sat at a table On the other side of the restaurant. Great service from our waitress, when we finally got one ;) The food though... so surprised! We split the salmon burger and a basket of sweet potato fries and it was fantastic! Highly recommend both. Delicious. Neither my wife or I can remember having a better meal at a ski resort bar. Delicious! The food and lunch service brought this review up to a 3 star vs our initial visit for a beer which would have been a 1. We'd still come back again and of course we will. Given it's the beginning of the season I'd expect the service to be better next time we're back. See y'all next time
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
During COVID, hard to beat Montana Jack's as your go to while on the mountain. They have a limited menu, but the food is pretty good. Burgers, wings, chili's and salads is what you'll find here. The beef brisket chili is hearty and a little spicy, I liked it! The best part is the numerous craft beers they offer. Too hard to try them all, but I liked the Robot Panda IPA $8. Came here at least 5 times during our week long vacation and was never disappointed. Almost always sat right down at a table. Service was good too!
google avatar

Joanna B.

Yelp
Don't go here. The food is mediocre at best. I had to ASK for our appetizer 30 minutes after we ordered it, but the server was going to bring it out with our main course. Isn't the reason for an appetizer to be before the main course? It took a very long time for our main course to come out - but maybe they were short in the kitchen. If they were, I wish they would have given us a heads up, if they were not short handed then it took WAY too long. Coleslaw was warm and varying amounts on each other's plate (see photo), onion rings were over cook and mushy and other negative things. We won't be back. Sorry for the negative review, but this was our experience.
