MONTAUK *Montauk: A Scenic Stop on Long Island, New York* Montauk, located at the easternmost tip of Long Island, New York, is a charming small town with a historic lighthouse. We visited Montauk by train, arriving at a simple platform-style station. Taxis are readily available outside the station, and we opted to take one to the lighthouse point. The taxi driver was friendly and reliable, dropping us off at the lighthouse and agreeing to return at 2 pm to take us back to the station. The lighthouse point itself is picturesque but can be explored within 30 minutes. Unfortunately, there are no restaurants or refreshment options nearby, so we spent the remaining time wandering around. As promised, our taxi driver returned on time and took us back to the train station. On the way, we grabbed some snacks since there are no amenities near the station. Given the limited options, it's advisable for tourists to have their own transportation. However, if that's not possible, taking a taxi from the station is a good alternative. *Tips for Visitors* - Have your own transportation for flexibility. - If taking a taxi, confirm the pickup time and fare beforehand. - Bring snacks and refreshments, as options are limited in Montauk. Overall, Montauk's scenic beauty and historic lighthouse make it a worthwhile visit, but plan accordingly to make the most of your trip.

Tips for Visitors: 1. Arrive Early: To avoid long wait times, try to arrive early in the day, especially on weekends. 2. Wear Comfortable Shoes: Since the climb involves steep and narrow steps, comfortable footwear is essential. 3. Check the Weather: Clear days offer the best views, so keep an eye on the weather forecast before your visit. 4. Bring Water: Stay hydrated, especially if you’re planning to hike the surrounding areas. 5. Time Your Visit: Consider visiting the museum first to learn about the lighthouse before climbing to the top. The Montauk Lighthouse is truly a gem along the New York coastline. The museum offers fascinating insights into the history of the lighthouse and its role in maritime navigation. The exhibits are well-curated, showcasing artifacts and stories that bring the area's rich maritime heritage to life. It's important to note that there is no line to enter the lighthouse museum itself. However, visitors should be prepared for a long queue, with possible wait times of up to an hour to reach the top. There is only one staircase for both ascending and descending, consisting of about 137 steep, narrow, and twisting steps, which limits the number of people allowed at a time. Despite this, the experience is definitely worth it. Climbing to the top provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding landscape. Overall, a visit to Montauk Lighthouse is a perfect blend of history, education, and natural beauty. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the area!

Such a beautiful and peaceful place! Montauk Point Lighthouse is a well-maintained and stunning spot with breathtaking views. The staff was so kind and friendly — it really made the visit special. I also loved the gift shop! They have lovely cotton items and a body fragrance that smelled amazing. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

I had an amazing time visiting the Montauk Lighthouse. The historical significance of the site is truly impressive, and it’s great to see how well it’s been preserved. The staff were incredibly informative and attentive, answering any questions I had about the lighthouse and its history. Climbing to the top took about 10 minutes — a fun little workout with a rewarding view at the end! While I was a bit disappointed that you can’t go out onto the balcony (you can only poke your head out), it didn’t take away from the overall experience. All in all, a great visit. I’m definitely looking forward to returning for more adventures in the future!

We drive here on a Saturday noon and found the experience yo be worth the drive. The drive to this spot is scenic and pleasant. The area near the lighthouse is surrounded by landscaped pavement and grass. There's ample parking. Unfortunately, drones aren't allowed. There's an entry fee of 15 for adults. There's a souvenir shop, and the museum is packed with a display of historic events and interesting stories. When you arrive at the base, there's a queue on a busy day to climb to the top where you can watch the light spinning on the top. The climb is easy but narrow. Check out the photos and videos for detail.

I've been wanting to come here for atleast two year and finally made the trip here. The parking fee its $8 and if you want to visit the museum and lighthouse is $15. The museum has plenty of cool history not just of the lighthouse but of the area in generalm here you'll find cool artifacts and items related to the area. The lighthouse its self its bigger than it looks in pictures. I recommend checking out the lighthouse 1st them the museum due to a line tends to build up.restrooms are located at the entrance begind the giftshop/ticket booth. This is because only a certain amount of people are allowed at the time. Also small children and babies not allowed so keep that in mind. Its 137 steps from top to bottom. Once you reach the top the views are amazing. There's a guide at the bottom and top who will answer any questions you may have. They will also provide the instructions on how to walk up down and down the steps. Once at the top they also give you the opportunity to see the light it self which is pretty cool. As you walk the grounds you take the the stunning views. They have benches to sit and relax and take in the gorgeous ocean views. Or you can relax on the grass or walk down by the water. They also have a section behind the museum & lighthouse about the marine life in the area. Overall it was a very unique awesome experience. Definitely addex to your bucket list.

While this review is technically for the Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum, the real highlight is the stunning viewpoint around the lighthouse and its breathtaking coastal scenery. The panoramic ocean views are absolutely incredible and make for unforgettable photos. It’s one of those places where the natural beauty truly speaks for itself. This spot is a must-visit if you’re on Long Island. The lighthouse is easily among the most, if not the most iconic landmark on the East End. You can feel the history and significance of the place while taking in the dramatic cliffs and crashing waves below. That said, a few tips: There is a parking lot, but be warned: parking during holidays like Memorial Day weekend is a complete nightmare. It was chaotic when we went, so try to visit during off-peak times if you can. Also, no picnics are allowed on the lighthouse grounds, which we didn’t realize until we got there. If you’re planning to bring food, there are other picnic-friendly areas nearby. Overall, the scenic views alone are worth the trip, and the surrounding area is great for a short walk, some fresh air, and amazing photo ops. Highly recommend!

Have wonderful historic place it’s pretty good to hang out with friends and family. I really enjoy our history of this lighthouse. This is the one of the oldest lighthouse in United States. I really love it and enjoy.

Yelp
I popped out to Montauk for a quick 24 hour trip. Of course I had to visit "The End" lighthouse. As always, it is inspiring to look out and see the vast ocean and watch the waves crash on the rocks. It is the miss of winter but the amenities are still open, especially the bathrooms which were very clean. Although you can't go up to the lighthouse itself temporarily, it was a magical place

Yelp
One of the reasons why Long Island is one of the greatest places. Yea it takes a while to get here, but the views are worth it. There's not much to say because you have to experience this for yourself. The lighthouse itself is accessible and if you can walk up it, I highly recommend it. A playground is stationed nearby if the kids get bored. Overall a must when going all the way to the end.

Yelp
I haven't been here in ages but finally returned on July 4th. It is such a remarkable and iconic landmark, steeped in rich history. Walking around the grounds and simply observing all the different little (and big) rocks along the water was just so relaxing. It was so fun watching the fisherman cast their lines and seeing people the boats out in the Oceanside do the same. I even got to meet the keeper of the lighthouse just as he finished surfing. I mean, how freaking cool is that?!
google avatar

Yelp
Very cool trip to the lighthouse in Montauk! Lots of gorgeous views, and very interesting history. There is also information about other lighthouses close by as well as restoration projects. Parking is $8 and it's $15 to tour the lighthouse which was well worth it. There is also a fun playground on site. We didn't go to the restaurant or gift shop because my son had reached his limit but I heard they are both great. Young children are free but are not allowed up in the tower so my husband and I traded off. There was a line but we visited In July which is probably a busier time. Definitely enjoyed the trip and found it to be well worth it!

Yelp
Montauk Point Lighthouse has a fascinating view of the Atlantic Ocean and the end point of Long Island. It's worth paying $15 USD to enter where you can explore the gift shop, museum and then climb the 100 steps in the lighthouse. The gift store is really catchy with some beautiful merchandises and book collection at affordable prices. If you purchase an item then you'll get 10% off should you decide to dine at George's lighthouse cafe. It's located about a 5 minutes walk from the lighthouse entrance. The history here is impressive and tells the story of the many lighthouse keepers and their family. Here is where the British soldiers dominated during the American Revolution war. There is this huge space with nice well groomed green grass and lots of benches to rest and enjoy the view. I see family enjoying fruits and light snacks on the ground. It's a nice place to explore if lighthouses is your thing. And I recommend going off peak season to avoid the tourist crowd.

Yelp
Growing up in Montauk, the lighthouse visits are a must. There has been an ongoing restoration project that was long overdue. The upkeep and property are in great condition. The only part that has changed is the $8 parking fee prior to even going into the lighthouse. Then you have a separate ticket fee which all goes back to maintaining the property. It's a beautiful experience with great views. I'm happy they still let you climb the steps to the top of the lighthouse. The on-site restaurant, George's is now more of a cafe with light food and drinks. It's a nice stop to check out in the area for sure.

Yelp
For my first review of 2024, I'm excited to leave a review for The Montauk Point Lighthouse in Long Island New York. I experienced this magical place on January 1, 2024 to see the breathtaking sunrise. I highly recommend seeing a sunrise at least once in your life. Simply walk towards the front of the Lighthouse to catch an epic sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse is huge and at this time of year, it's accented in Christmas lights. According to Yelp, the lighthouse is temporarily closed - but it looks like it will reopen in March 2024. There is an $8 fee charged by New York State between 8 am and 4 pm. But since we arrived for sunrise, it was free. The parking lot was packed, so be sure to arrive early. Dress warmly. Bring hat, gloves and scarf to stay warm. It's COLD!! Brrrrrr. The photos and videos do not do justice. You have to visit this place in real life! I promise you'll be glad you did!

Yelp
If you're ever in the Hamptons or Montauk this Lighthouse is a MUST! The museum is located in the lower level of the lighthouses and it is packed with information on display. It was so interesting to read about the history of this Lighthouse and it's surrounding areas. Feel like climbing? Climb the narrow, circular staircase to the top of the lighthouse! Note that there is no handrail but there is a rope you can hold onto. If you're claustrophobic, I recommend that you skip the climb and watch the video of the view from the Lighthouse instead! lol The grounds and view from the lighthouse are beautiful. You can also walk along the lighthouse path to the beautiful beach. Note that the beach and grounds are free. There is an entry fee to go into the lighthouse and museum. Adults/$15, kids under 12/$5 Parking: Parking is $8 (8am-4pm Daily). Free after 4 pm. Note that the lighthouse/museum closes at 5pm. There are restrooms and a gift shop to the left of the ticket box.

Yelp
The first Lighthouse of NY. A really cool place to visit, walk and take in what nature has to offer. We parked and then was able to walk around the park and experience the beach, lighthouse and bluffs. Great place to take pics and to just sit and soak in nature. We walked on the rocks by the water and were able to catch different glimpses of the lighthouse. Although the day was cloudy and a bit stormy we still loved it. They also have a gift shop with plenty of nice things to purchase.
google avatar

Julianne A.

Yelp
The lighthouse is situated in a beautiful spot, and the view from there is nothing short of spectacular! Tip: Climbing to the top of the lighthouse. Isn't for everyone; if you have problems with heights or a tendency toward claustrophobia, you probably want to forego the climb Note that the wait to get in to make the ascent can be very long, so the best time to visit is probably in a weekday morning. Over and above the lighthouse proper and the museum, there's also a gift shop here that you can visit. There's a paid parking lot here, and pets aren't allowed.
google avatar

Chunjai K.

Yelp
Stunning View, Beautiful Lighthouse and the most important thing DOG NOT ALLOWED! remember this! Could be better if I will be able to get into the ground but I couldn't. I saw the sign of guard dog so that is why, unless it is a service dog who well train and well behaved. I thought at the beginning they won't just allow you to enter to the building but even the ground you can't. We walk around outside the lighthouse gate and on the beach. It was stunning even the weather was hot in early September. I can see fog on top of the lighthouse and the beach that next to giant rocks. On the side of the lighthouse there are people fishing and it was so mysterious looking. Even it was out of season but still many tourists, think about in the summer it probably packed. My friend how live here told me, coming during high season is a mistake. Lots of traffic in Montauk, everyone eat and go to the same place and as you know Montauk is not a big town and has limitation of utilities and convenient stuff. Everything seems to be more expensive here than regular long island area. Anyway, Montauk Point Lighthouse is the most must go when you visit Montauk.
google avatar

K C.

Yelp
For the experience - it is recommended! Summer hours should be adjusted to open longer and catch more of the sun. It would be nice. By the time I walked from the parking lot to the ticket counter it was closed, so I did not go up, but I went around back and took pictures from the perspective of the cliff under the lighthouse. One day I'll return to get the lighthouse experience.
google avatar

Yelp
I might thinking lighthouse area and don't forget the price of my house today but if you say so

Yelp
A must see when you visit the eastern end of Long Island. Nicely preserved and the staff are very helpful
google avatar

Vanessa H.

Yelp
Stunning views!! Definitely a must see if you live in Long Island or in New York. The views up top of the lighthouse were gorgeous, but we couldn't spend too much time up there. The museum portion itself was interactive and fun! Glad I got to visit.
google avatar

Yelp
You can't go out to the Hamptons and NOT go to the lighthouse. You just can't ! It was on my bucket list (getting to the Hamptons), so included in that, of course, is seeing the Montauk lighthouse, which is located at the very end of eastern Long Island. Any further than that, you're in the ocean !! I happen to love lighthouses, and it's been a long while since seeing any, so I was very happy to see this one... like I was seeing a long lost friend after a long separation. After all the years I've been coming to New York but had never made my way to the Hamptons, well, this was quite a wonderful moment for me. Ironically, it started raining right when we arrived, so we didn't feel like walking around in the rain. We just drove around the lighthouse area or sat in our car admiring the lighthouse. Naturally, after about 15 minutes, we decided to leave since the rain didn't look like it was going to let up anytime soon. However, by the time we got to about Amagansett, not only did it stop raining, the clouds disappeared and within an hour or so, it was sunny altogether..... and sunny for the rest of the day. Timing is everything !

Yelp
The lighthouse is in a very pretty setting, but the problem is the tourist experience. The lighthouse has no railing, but a slack rope on one side of the spiral staircase. Only people in good health and balance should attempt it. Once you reach the top (via an unstable ladder) you step out and can only stand in one spot - in other words you are not permitted to walk around to get a 360 degree view of the area. You are rushed to take a couple of pictures in that one spot, because there is an assembly of people behind you. It is very unfortunate because of the difficulty in reaching Montauk Point via a one lane highway and then to be cheated out of what could be a great view at the top. It is not fair or reasonable for tourists seeking a unique experience to spend the time and money for very little at the end.
google avatar

Vanessa T.

Yelp
Such a beautiful and breathtaking place to come visit. The air is so nice and refreshing, Definitely worth the ride from the city. Even if it was about 3+ hrs due to so much traffic coming into Montauk, it was definitely a nice and very enjoyable ride with lots to see.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Took the drive from NYC to the eastern most point of Long Island to visit this historic light house and it was closed! The website at the time of visiting hadn't updated their hours so we were unable to get inside the grounds for close up picture or visit their museum. We were still able to get some nice pictures from the rest of the grounds which serve as a good viewpoint. Parking at the time was free and the bathroom was clean and accessible after nearly a 4 hour drive. Make the trip!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Cool piece of history. And also cool to say you've been to the farthest end of Long Island. But we couldn't go up to the tower due to covid/renovations. And there was a huge Trump rally in their parking lot, full of pick up trucks, naturally, all decked out with various items of idol worship as well as flags proclaiming His return in 2021. So that was a plus. If nothing else, it made our visit more memorable.
google avatar

Frank M.

Yelp
No food here! Rather-- a wonderful place to stare into the ocean and contemplate life and vacation decisions. At least there's sunlight and ocean to make it comfortable!

Reese M.

Yelp
Beautiful lighthouse it's maintained so well. It's also filled with a lot of fun facts and history of the lighthouse and Montauk.
google avatar

Hsin-Yi W.

Yelp
We visited the Montauk Point Lighthouse from Queens and the drive wasn't too bad about 2.5 hours. It was totally worth the trip to check out the beautiful lighthouse and seascape. During COVID-19, the museum in the lighthouse was closed but tourists can take a walk by the coastal line. The arrangement of the parking lot was great, all the cars were required to keep social distancing. The trails are flat and perfect for all family members from elders to kids. It was also wonderful for a picnic.
google avatar

Thom H.

Yelp
If you're in Montauk, you gotta drive out to the lighthouse. Might not be worth it if you're taking a day trip out only to see the lighthouse, but I wouldn't recommend an in-season day trip to Montauk, you'll miss a lot and the traffic will drive you crazy. Anyway, parking is free at the lighthouse if you have the Empire Pass. There's a path or two that leads down to the shoreline, walk around the north end to see some nice tide pools. Someone said that you should climb on the shore-break around the lighthouse - don't. Those rocks are probably steady, but they're there to protect the lighthouse, they don't need some "adventurous" dope dislodging them accidentally. The museum was better than expected, had a lot of interesting documents and maps. We couldn't go in the lighthouse itself, it was being renovated. It was cool to the see the blocks under the paint, though.
google avatar

Hwal L.

Yelp
It's possible that once we found out unexpectedly that they charge $8 for parking, it impacted the experience. We parked and took a look around but decided to skip the lighthouse. Instead we walked down to the beach to the north of the lighthouse, and it was more fun and interesting than I imagine the lighthouse would have been. I enjoyed the cloudless sky and rocky beach front, and it was a perfect spot for people watching and a little picnic.
google avatar

Winny L.

Yelp
Definitely a place to see at least one when in Montauk especially if you like lighthouses....and climb up the 137 narrow spiral staircase to the top to get a view from above. It's takes less than 90 seconds to climb up but since it's narrow, have to stay to one side and watch traffic. Not too many people are allowed up at one time. So have patience. Parking is $8. Right now it's closed to climb up, but when it does open up, it's a good trip. It was windy last time I went and a bit of wait given the crowds. Good educational visit as well as you walk around inside and nice picture spots outside. The prices have gone up now to $12 for adults, $8 seniors and $5 for kids 12 and under. Note: must be at least 41" tall to climb up. Watch you head as you go up down the stairs. Flat shoes and no backpacks given the tight space. Don't forget to sign the guest book before you leave.
google avatar

Diana A.

Yelp
Loved the scenery! Enjoyed seeing the waves of the ocean. It was a cold day but It didn't matter. Just wished that the museum was open! After having taken a drive for about an hour and a half, it was disappointing to find out that it was closed! I wanted to see it from the inside up top so bad! Online, it said that it was open. Will definitely, take the drive again when the summer is here.
google avatar

JP P.

Yelp
What a beautiful place! It was great getting away from the city and breathing in clean air. Was there on Tuesday and although the lighthouse was closed, parking was free and we were able to roam all around the perimeter and take a few pics.
google avatar

Megan Y.

Yelp
Did you even go to Montauk if you didn't visit the Montauk Point Lighthouse?! At the very tip of the island, lies this beacon, which served a very important role for sailors back in olden days. Explore the lighthouse museum itself and you can even get up to the top with some 360 views- beware, it can be a bit cramped so not the best for those who are claustrophobic! There's also a rocky but lovely area surrounding the lighthouse with very scenic views. It's nice to take a stroll with your traveling companions! All in all, would recommend making a quick stop if you are in town!
google avatar

Robbie C.

Yelp
The Montauk lighthouse is located at the eastern most tip of the south fork of Long Island. Sadly, covid restrictions are in place so you can't enter or climb up. Having grown up on Long Island, I have made the climb before and it is steep and winding. There is a museum, masks mandatory and a fee to enter. Parking is another $8 fee per car. There is a playground area which is nice to let the kids blow off some energy. Also there are paths leading to the beach and a restaurant. On a clear day, you can see across to Connecticut. Lots of history to this lighthouse as it was built in 1796 and commissioned by George Washington. Due to erosion, restoration project has been underway. Definitely worth a visit even if you can't climb up.
google avatar

Wendy P.

Yelp
I love history. Anything historical where I can learn and see visuals of yesteryears. And this place does it wonderfully. Love the the walk up in the lighthouse. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
google avatar

Jacky C.

Yelp
Drove out to Montauk for the first time all the way from Manhattan to check out what all the fuss is about coming out here. Of course this is probably the most famous attraction when visiting. A nice four hour drive one way. I came with three other people and was turned off by all of the costs. Parking is $8 and entrance to the lighthouse ground is another $12 per person. That's $56 alone; super overpriced. We ended up not paying for the tickets and just took photos in front of the gated area, wandered around the trails, and took photos by the restaurant to make the trip worthwhile. The history is cool and everything, but not worth the asking price.
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
Montauk Point Lighthouse is an absolute must-see if you ever find yourself sightseeing on the Eastern side of Long Island. You'll find an incredible amount of spectacular views here of the Lighthouse and it's surrounding landscapes, as well as all the encompassing Ocean views. Important Historical Dates are as follows; 1796 - Commissioned by President George Washington. 1969 - Placed on the National Register of Historical Places. 2012 - Designated a National Historic Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior Department of the U.S.A. And don't forget to visit the Gift Shop before you leave. All proceeds go towards the maintenance and upkeep of this Incredible Historical Lighthouse.

Yelp
I have visited this lighthouse on more than one occasion, it's a nice area to checkout walk around & catch the views. The park right next to it makes it easy to get some great views of the Lighthouse , the area is nice & well kept. This is a nice sight to stop by admire the views & take some nice scenery pictures.
google avatar

Marlon T.

Yelp
If you end up making the drive all the way to the tip of Long Island, you'll be rewarded with an All-American, historic, picture-postcard, land-meets-sea monument visit to an old lighthouse. Built in 1796, it is the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States. I came after visiting hours so I didn't even have the option of climbing the tower, but apparently it's not worth it according to some Yelpers. At any rate, you can come here to relax, get some wind in your face, and just enjoy the view of the sea in front of you. There's something about lighthouses, with their tallness, simplicity, and purpose, that makes them great landmarks to visit and appreciate. Montauk Point Lighthouse is no exception and worth the drive out from Manhattan. Grab some great food somewhere along the way like at The Lobster Roll!
google avatar

Leslie M.

Yelp
Nice place to visit is at the East end of Long Island, there a cafe and souvenirs store that is conveniently located at the side of the light house. Parking is free after 4pm because the lighthouse is closed at that time. There's a town before getting here that is beautiful and there's plants of places to eat.
google avatar

Stacy G.

Yelp
I love going out east and spending a weekend out there. We stayed at a place called something like sunset/sun wave. It was beautiful. Our room overlooked the water. The lighthouse is amazing. I also visit the Bluffs. It's the end of the island and pretty incredible.
google avatar

Fabian C.

Yelp
We had driven to the lighthouse but never made our way into the grounds. We had taken in the view from the parking lot. Free admission in that lot with your ticket from Hither Hills or maybe even an Empire Pass. But the lighthouse is another charge. Well it's definitely worth it. Breathtaking views and a fun site for the kids to run around and explore. They provide for you a little fun and historical scavenger hunt. The kids had fun completing that. Lots of cool artifacts and history to discover too. For just the views I think it's worth it but there is also so much more!

Yelp
Very nice! The view is beautiful. Parking is $8. We got a magnet and 2 anklets from the gift shop there. Went to the beach (easy pathway) and it was just so serene! The weather was a bit on the colder side, still stunning and peaceful view nevertheless. I love that they have wooden swings you can sit on and enjoy the view. There were people there, but it wasn't overcrowded which was great.

Yelp
My husband and I were looking forward in coming here and visiting the lighthouse. Unfortunately due to covid the times on visiting, the hours are closed early so we missed out on the time. We made the best of it and found a path down near the shore and was able to take photos of the lighthouse. Definitely come here and check it out. The views are amazing and gorgeous as well.

Yelp
Worth the trip (especially if it is not a sunny beach day!) The Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest Lighthouse in New York State and the fourth oldest Lighthouse in the United States. It was commissioned by the second congress, under George Washington in 1792 and completed in 1796. Walk up the 137 steps to the top of the Lighthouse and see the complete 360 degree view of the tip of Long Island. You feel like you are at the end of the world! The rooms downstairs house a small museum detailing not only the history of the Lighthouse, but that area of Eastern Long Island as well. There was a small exhibit on fishing in the area which even my kids enjoyed. The many docents are all helpful and informative. There is a gift shop near the entrance with all sorts of souvenirs. It is hard to believe that the Lighthouse was just designated a National Historic Landmark only in 2012! Yes, the parking is $8/car and admission is $11/adult. Isn't that a small price to pay to help for the upkeep for a landmark that is still a beacon of light for the ships off our shore?

Yelp
When visiting the east end of Long Island, you need to stop by and see the sights. Built in the 1790s, you are seeing history. Well worth the drive. Plenty of parking! Wonderful gift shop.

Yelp
- The views are great and amazing - I visited in August, and they closed kind of early to see the sunset * That was the whole point of visiting

Yelp
This is the end. My only friend, the end. Actually, mis amigos are totally not lighthouses (I have actual, human friends, I promise), but the Montauk Lighthouse is a legitimately awesome place to visit. There's a large chunk of time between my first trip here and the one I took this past summer (some amount over 15 years). My initial venture was in the rain and mildly defeated the glorious views one can gaze at once atop this landmark, but my recent travels showed me the true beauty of Montauk. Now I don't want to get sentimental here, but it really is breathtaking to climb up this lighthouse and gaze out into the Atlantic Ocean. Knowing you're literally at the end of Long Island is a pretty cool feeling. Taking a pic might help you remember said feels, but it won't be the same as actually being there. Surrounding those views, you'll get plenty of info and history. Walk around the lower levels of the lighthouse and take in the artifacts and nautical knowledge filling its walls. Do it all for only $11 (not to sound like an infomercial, but it's a respectable price). Once done, head over to the gift shop and grab a souvenir to show you've visited. Plenty of little items available including clothes, post cards, shot glasses, and bumper stickers. They literally still have the same one my mother got almost two decades ago ("I've seen the light"), but I find that fact nostalgically cool (for some reason). Overall, the Montauk Lighthouse is an iconic (if not THE iconic) landmark of Long Island and worthy of at least one visit, no matter how old you are. From the views and information, it's definitely a destination that can be repeated more than once (or even twice!). If you've never been, take the trek out east and learn just how amazing a lighthouse can be (no friendship needed).

Yelp
Obviously it's a beautiful place. My 3 stars is only bc they didn't tell us before spending $40.00 on tix that we couldn't climb. I'm all for donating/supporting, just be up front please.

Yelp
I like lighthouses... This lighthouse is also a privately run museum, independent of Montauk State Park. Entry to the lighthouse costs $12.00 for an adult, $8.00 for seniors and $4.00 per child. It's on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the first lighthouse in NYS and the fourth-oldest active lighthouse in the US. Captain Kidd was rumored to have buried treasure at the foot of the lighthouse site in 1699. If you've come all the way to the end of Long Island because, like me, you like interesting geographical points, you will want to visit this historic and beautiful building.

Yelp
Huge fan of lighthouses and this one was a major check off my list. Getting all the way to "the end" took some crazy time from the middle of the island, but the views were well worth it on this clear day. I like that you can avoid paying to go inside the very small museum ($11 is a bit much for what you'll experience is what I was told over and over) and walk up the beach trail to find fisherman and other people walking the rocks for some cool angles of the structure. You are already paying $8 just to park, so I am fine saving my $ to spend in town on a bite to eat locally. Expect some time to get into the lot since it is only one lane and the woman working took her sweet time getting people paid and on their way.
