Horrible experience and they almost killed my Mom (new cancer patient), twice. She had had a bile duct stent put in which unbeknownst to her, had started bleeding. My bro and I insisted that she go to the ER when she passed out at home. I took an Uber in from the City on a Sunday night. LONG wait time. Long story short, they discharged her incorrectly twice and almost killed her twice. The first time, they didn't treat her sepsis properly and insisted that it was a UTI. The second time, they ALMOST put her on blood thinner--for a minor clot in a minor vein at a site of an IV that was left in too long--even though she was admitted for INTERNAL BLEEDING. The hematologist on call over the weekend hadn't even read her freaking file. Also, her infection source was hidden because the night staff didn't clean her up properly from a bowel movement (which she could have gotten help to the bathroom for if they ever answered the call buttons) so they tried to paint over it as a UTI rather than consider sepsis (pro tip an adult running a fever of 104.5 is not from a UTI). Over the course of 3 weeks, not a day went by where there wasn't some confusion over what meds she should have, WHERE the freaking meds were (they kept not delivering certain ones all the time/at the wrong time), and so on. Zero continuum of care between shifts, etc. When the blood thinner error happened, I asked her "managing physician" there WTAF was going on, and his EXACT response was "look, I have 30 patients on this floor; I can't remember the details of all of them." HE ACTUALLY SAID THAT. VERBATIM. Also, they were completely incompetent RE trying to arrange transportation to MSKCC Urgent Care in the City where she should have been from the getgo. At the end of the day we got her there where she is receiving much better care. In the meantime, she lost 3 weeks of her life, delayed her treatment, and almost died TWICE due to staff screwups. AND...don't get me started RE the general cleanliness and amenities. They screwed up her meal orders EVERY SINGLE TIME, even sending her stuff that she was explicitly told not to have. It's not unusual to see stuff like a discarded glove/mask/bed pad under a bed. The lady in the bay next to Mom the last time had one of of those urine suction things (not a catheter but similar) whose container was always at nearly full, like, nobody knew to change it. Now, some of the day nurses were FANTASTIC but the coverage on the nights and weekends is absolute crap. Specialists wander between different hospitals, and one specialist may say something one day that directly contradicts what another guy said the other day. DO NOT leave your loved ones alone there; if you MUST pass through their doors STAY WITH THEM and bring stuff to write on and DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. PS I can't wait until the bills start rolling in for this one as I am sure it will be a shitshow. I plan on asking for itemized billing for every damn thing. BONUS AGGRAVATION: The cafeteria isn't opened and there isn't really anything in the area except one rinky dink deli with limited hours. If Mom makes it out of the hospital once her care regimen begins, I HOPE that I can convince her to pay for private transport back down to MSKCC in the City rather than go there; all they will do is set back her treatment and make things WORSE. In 3 weeks Mom went from a vibrant, independent senior to bedridden. Hopefully she can get better care elsewhere going forward. OH and they also kept calling in her scrips to the wrong pharmacies.
