Montimerso SkyScape Country House, Alentejo, Portugal - Explore & Book

"We fell in love with this sparkling eco-hotel in a secret corner of glorious Alentejo countryside. Nature is at the heart of everything here - from the fresh, seasonal ingredients used in the highly acclaimed kitchen, to the trendy, locally-sourced homewares in the rooms. The surrounding land has been rewilded, so expect seas of wildflowers (in spring), aromas of herbal plants wafting through the air, and a chorus of soothing birdsong. A Unesco certification made this the first Starlight Tourism Destination in the world, meaning magnificent Milky Way-filled skies follow awesome sunsets. But the real star of the show? The Alqueva Lake (Europe's largest manmade reservoir) that glistens as far as the eye can see. Take in the view from the infinity pool or from your very own private terrace (every room has one). This is heavenly stuff. All suites are generously sized and beautifully designed with handmade interiors and those far-reaching views of the lake or countryside. Some even have their own heated plunge pools. We adored the chic and serene vibe, the muted tones and the cork and wicker touches. There are lake beaches and medieval walled towns and villages nearby – hilltop Monsaraz blew us away – as well as horse-riding, wine-tasting, biking, balloon rides and a Wellness Dome on the estate itself. Everything here is about preserving nature and traditional ways of life. We were utterly charmed. One to remember, for sure. Highs Breathtaking sunsets seen best with a sundowner from a special picnic spot on the estate Staff are super-friendly and can help with everything from swimming spots to English-speaking guides Every room is fabulous and comes with a private terrace for soaking up the rugged views - there isn't a speck of civilisation in sight Marvel at the Milky Way through the telescope in the dining room or the stargazing platform outside This region is wild and wonderful - few tourists have discovered it, and the tiny fortified hilltop village of Monsaraz (6km away) is one of Portugal’s loveliest gems Lows No twin rooms here (just doubles); and no bathtubs It's remote, and the nearest village is 6km away; you’ll need a car Pathways can be a little uneven so watch your step The infinity pool is designed for gentle dipping rather than vigorous swims and is unheated Dinner orders are taken 24 hours in advance (to save on food waste), and the restaurant is closed for dinner on Sundays and Mondays" - Lucy Richardson

Extremely relaxing and peaceful country house with a fantastic view to Alqueva. The included breakfast is plentiful and the dinner is worth trying at least once. The staff is young, energetic and always helpful. The pool is nice but some of the other spaces of the perimeter need to be better taken care of.

A Beautiful Stay with Room for Refinement We had a truly lovely time at Montimerso. The setting is absolutely breathtaking, the views from the pool alone are reason enough to book a stay. The staff was warm, attentive, and genuinely kind, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The hotel grounds and amenities are good, and our premium room was beautifully designed with exquisite taste and a real sense of calm. That said, for a hotel positioned as high standing, there are a few details that could be fine-tuned to elevate the overall experience. For instance, our private terrace, although beautifully arranged, featured a small green umbrella that felt a bit out of place next to the otherwise refined decor. A minor detail, but noticeable. The pool area, while set against one of the most stunning backdrops we’ve seen, had a mix of sunbeds that didn’t quite match the premium atmosphere. Similarly, the pool bar functioned more as a storage area for pool items than an actual bar, when I asked for sparkling water, I was told to get one from the room minibar. For a luxury stay, complimentary water and a proper poolside refreshment setup would make a big difference. We also booked the Lovescape diner, which sounded romantic and exclusive at €150. While the service, once again, was delightful, the overall experience fell short of expectations. The food didn’t match the price point, with very simple plates and minimal presentation (a few lonely asparagus for a starter, for example), and the wine included was modest. Despite these small points, we do recommend Montimerso. It’s a beautiful, peaceful place with a lot of heart. With just a bit more attention to the premium details, this hotel could truly be exceptional. We left relaxed and recharged, and grateful for the warm hospitality.

One of the most interesting and beautiful experiences in Alentejo. Perfect balance of elegance and a relaxed environment. Bonus points for the solar powered free EV charging!

The hotel is very nicely decorated, rooms are spacious, view is beautiful and the staff is very kind. The only downside was that despite being a "pet-friendly hotel" (there is a pet fee), we found out dogs are sadly not allowed at the restaurant or in any of the common areas, which made it slightly more complicated to enjoy.

This is a lovely minimalist property with great views of the lake. Don't stay here expecting a large staff around at all times to cater to you, rather this is a place for relaxation and self-sufficiency. ||Our room was lovely, clean, spacious, and nicely decorated to reflect the surrounding Alentego region. Comfortable bed, strong AC during the peak of summer, and lovely shower. ||The infinity pool is the best part of the resort. We spent most of our time here. There wasn't staff service at the pool during our stay, so we purchased wine at the restaurant and they gave us re-usable plastic glasses, bottle opener, and an ice pack to keep wine cold. Amazing pool with incredible views. Immaculately relaxing. ||The restaurant is lovely, Breakfast is included for all guests. The one night we ate dinner at the restaurant, it was lovely and delicious. There's a strong focus on local and seasonal ingredients, and they require reservations to minimize food waste -- which is appreciated. The wine menu is small but features producers from the region.||I'm hoping to stay here again next year and I recommend you try it out!

This is an absolutely exceptional country retreat which we cannot recommend highly enough. The location is slightly off the beaten track, set in beautiful countryside with the most incredible night sky for star gazing. There are beautiful villages to visit and eat at, with everything being in close proximity. The resort is of an extremely high standard, immaculately clean and well maintained. The bedrooms are large and spacious with comfy beds and private terraces. The swimming pool looks out over the countryside and there are plenty of loungers for relaxing. The staff go out of their way to be helpful and give tips about what to do in the local area. The breakfast buffet was excellent and the dinners were delicious. The best resort we have stayed at - we will most definitely be back. It's where to come for peace and relaxation. You will not be disappointed.

+ves||- A beautiful estate with stunning views|- Great walks and cycling (bikes available)|- Small resort, intimate and private|- Gorgeous pool|- Reception / Restaurant staff excellent||-ves||- Rooms a too basic for the high price, lack of soft furnishings and looked tired (scuffs and scratches on paintwork)|- While the restaurant menu was limited, it was tasty local fayre, restaurant closed for dinner on Sundays and Mondays and given location of the resort, and draconian rules around bringing your own food on site, what are you supposed to do?|- Pet policy is greedy and verging on ridiculous. They charge an extortionate rate of €75 per pet per stay (‘for hygiene’), plus ask for a €140+ liability deposit. Given the lack of soft floor furnishings in the rooms, the countryside location and the fact the owners three dogs roam freely around (and two came into our room on more than one occasion!) this felt like a money making racket and dampened our stay at this ‘pet friendly’ resort. We fully expect to pay a proportionate and fair fee for deep cleaning, but how they arrived at this excessive fee is unclear (there are no carpets on the floors it is polished cement, so limited cleaning required). Be warned before you book!
