This is more like a 3-3.5* hotel stay, but excellent service from hotel staff bump it up to 4... everyone from the two sweet ladies in housekeeping, to the concierge for directions and sightseeing recommendations, parking valet and a particular shout out to Louis Philippe at the Elite check-in desk.
Originally we parked the car ourselves in the underground garage (hotel parking is on level 5). Be very careful... narrow lanes and low spaces. Nothing over 6 feet tall can go in there. We have a Ford Flex which is quite low, but the antenna on the roof kept bouncing off the pipes that run along the ceiling. Sounded like those straws kids used to put on their bike tire spokes. ;) And with the "hearse's" long wheel base, we kept nudging curbs turning on to the ramps. The hotel opened in 1967 (just in time for Expo '67) and shares the parking garage with offices and shopping at Place du Canada. How on earth the monstrosity cars of that era managed to manoeuvre in and out of that garage eludes me. We ended up switching to valet parking the next day, otherwise you pay $20/day and the clock starts over every time you go in or out. In/out privileges are only available with the valet. I think it was $34 (plus tips) to let them worry about not taking out pillars or blowing a tire on those curbs.
Elevator up to the rear entrance is decidedly antique. As was a lot of the décor going along the hallway. My husband was not impressed to see they used the wrong colour temperature LEDs in the chandeliers, far too white. What can I say, it's what he does. When you actually get into the Grand Hall, that's obviously been updated, but maintaining a rich and elegant ambiance. Love the large tapestry of Samuel de Champlain's (for whom the hotel was named) ship of exploration hanging at the back of the beautiful staircase to the lower lobby.
When we checked in at the Elite desk, we found we had been upgraded to a mini-suite. Merci beaucoup! It was a nice room, for 1980s. They've been renovating the guest rooms, but apparently haven't made it to the 34th floor yet. Furniture is worn, upholstery on the sitting room chairs is ripped, plaster on the popcorn ceiling behind the curtain rails has fallen off from water damage. I was very sad to see the condition of the leather top on the desk. Bed was comfortable, so that at least wasn't worn out.
You forget all that mundane stuff when your eyes behold the panoramic view from those eyelash windows (or cheese graters as some people have described them). Simply stunning! Not to mention the location with so many wonderful options for food, history, shopping (both down the street and underground access from the hotel lobby, along with the metro subway) and entertainment within walking distance. We were attending the Adele concert just a block away at CentreBell, home of the Montréal Canadiens. And with glorious, early fall weather, it was an incredibly perfect time to do lots of walking.
