The Ultimate Guide to Scattered Body Parts

"Most of the Confederate general Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was buried in a Lexington, Virginia, cemetery that now bears his name, but he was so famous at the time of his death that his amputated left arm was spirited away to its own separate grave. It was just after dark on May 2, 1863. Jackson had just launched a devastating attack against Union forces at Chancellorsville. Returning to his own lines with several staff officers, Jackson, ever the aggressive soldier, decided to conduct reconnaissance in the area. As he and his staff rode through the woods near Confederate lines, a North Carolina regiment, unable to see who was riding up on them, opened fire. Jackson was struck by three bullets, two of them shattering his left arm. The general was evacuated from the area and given medical treatment, but the arm couldn’t be saved and was amputated. Pneumonia set in, and on May 10, 1863, the South lost its most effective tactician. While Jackson’s body would travel to Lexington, where he had taught before the war, his severed arm would receive its own burial. Thinking that the limb of so great a solider was too precious to simply throw on the regular body part trash pile, Jackson’s unofficial company chaplain, Reverend Tucker Lacy wrapped the arm in a blanket and took it to his family cemetery. The reverend gave the limb a standard Christian burial and placed a marker above the site. Supposedly Stonewall Jackson’s arm was dug up and reburied numerous times in the ensuing years and there is no concrete evidence that it still resides in its original burial space, but the simple gravestone remains to remember one of the oddest instances of hero-worship in the history of battle." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Interesting stop if you're in the area learning about not only the Civil War but also what happened to Stonewall Jackson during the battle of Chancellorsville. As always, NP rangers are stationed here during the summer to give you all the details you need. They never disappoint in their knowledge!

I heard about this lesser known site from Atlas Obscura and stopped by on my way up to Harper's Ferry. Follows signs to the Ellwood Manor, which has a small gravel entrance. It's a beautiful site with a historic home. The monument is a short walk from the property. The ranger on duty, Stewart, was so friendly and full of historical facts not only about Stonewall's arm but also the property and that family that owned it.

The grounds surrounding the monument are breathtakingly beautiful. If you are there on the weekend, you will have the pleasure of speaking to the ridiculously friendly NPS staff.

Jackson's arm is buried at the Ellwood house family cemetary. The farm is absolutely gorgeous! There were volunteers that gave a tour of the house and the rich history of its occupants. Highly recomend!

My wife and I snuck in here on our way to Harpers Ferry one night. We had the place to ourselves.

Love following the history! Don’t just visit the sites, learn what our history has to teach us. Great man who gave all for his beliefs.

Wish I could rate this. Drove over here and it was closed when the website said it would be open

It was an honor to visit the resting place of my favorite generals arm. What a gorgeous place and very polite and knowledgeable staff. Salute!
