When the Navajo Nation Reopens, Visitors Must Return Slowly—And Respectfully

"The diversity of the landscape is dizzying—Monument Valley Tribal Park, the Navajo side of Lake Powell, and Canyon de Chelly, a place that I hold especially close."

Should you need to reduce the driving time between Bryce Canyon and Monument Valley, a stop at Capitol Reef would allow you to rest, see some petroglyphs, and sleep in an old-school Conestoga wagons at the Broken Spur Inn. The road 12 to Monument Valley is stunning, and once you get there make sure to check-in at the View Hotel, as it is the only one that will allow you to stay in the Park once all the tourists are gone. Go horseback riding at sunset, galloping with wild horses to areas of Monument Valley that cars cannot access. And wake up at sunrise, to catch that magic light and drive around the official route before everyone else starts packing the place.

This is another great place to see the special Geography in middle-west area. The views during the tour are stunning. The roads inside are unpaved and very steap in some spots, so a 4x4 vehicle with higher clearance is obsolutely a must. We jioned the tour though we did rent a 4x4 vehicle. The guide was nice and helpful, giving some introduction of the spots. There is no washroom during the tour which can last about 2 hours around, so use washroom before jumping onto the vehicle. Strongly recommended.

The “monuments” or rock formations in this park are amazing. Each monument is unique and you are bound to go a photo-frenzy spree once in the park. There is a fee to enter, which is not covered by any national/state park pass. Once in, you can explore the 17-mile loop in your own car or rent a tour. The loop is very bumpy at places, but can be easily self-served in a sedan/suv if you drive slow and carefully navigate the bumps. I feel that a 2-wheel drive can do the job well too. The visitor center is closed during the weekends, but that doesn’t prevent you from paying the toll and driving around the park. There is a very nice view from the roof top/2nd level of the visitor center which remains open during the weekend in case you don’t want to drive around the bumpy trail. The monuments we really loved were Elephant, John Ford, Three Sisters, Rain God Mesa, and the three that you see right at the entrance. You can pretty much drive around, with little to no hike required to see all the monuments. Highly recommend this place for all ages.

Such a beautiful, powerful place! It costs $8 per person to enter the tribal park. Well worth it! We got there around 6:30, and the scenic drive closes at 8. We had plenty of time to complete the drive and marvel at the beautiful landscapes and rock formations, and take pictures of course. If you have the time, take it. We would’ve loved to have more time.

Stunning! Spectacular! A place you need to see! We did a trip with Navajo Guides, 3.5 hours, and got off the beaten path. Definitely worth it. The road through the park is NOT paved so if you are in a sedan, do the smart thing and use a guide. With our guide we saw parts of the park not accessible by the road, including petroglyphs and arches.

Amazing self-drive through Monument Valley with stunning rock formations and scenic desert views. The 17-mile loop is bumpy but manageable — take it slow and enjoy the ride. Dogs are allowed too, so bring your pup for the adventure (just keep them leashed)!

The place is a must see! The valley itself is so beautiful and all the “monuments” are big as mountain! Amazing trip! The Arizona bluesky is different level. We went there in late March and was not hot nor warm in Spring. We love the sun! The Monument Valley is like a place where God lives and a place to wonder. An SUV is recommended to drive around each monument. There is an entrance fee for each car and a guide map for the whole valley to tour. There are hotels / inns where you can stay. There is time when it opens and closes. There are also tour guide vehicles if you want to use the tour guide services.

A visit to Navajo country to enjoy not only the beauty of the landscape but also the history, culture and practices of the people. The highlight of the visit was the fun and comical narration by the tour guide Richie. The visit into a traditional hogan also enriched the trip

Beautiful area :) we were just driving by and were able to see a little of these magnificent monuments. I really wish we had, had time to swing into the Navajo entrance to take the full scenic route. If you are planning to be in the area, plan an extra 30 min and bring a couple extra $$ to pay the fair to swing through the entire valley. So beautiful! And remember.. Valley of the God's it right up the street ;) lol
