"You don’t need to go to church on Sunday to take a seat on a pew, gaze up at stained-glass windows, and be carried away by gospel music. In a small room inside a library at Baylor University, in Waco, Texas, you’ll find Lev’s Gathering Place, a special listening room where visitors can access the entire archive of Baylor’s Black Gospel Music Restoration Project. After journalism professor and gospel music scholar Robert Darden wrote a New York Times op-ed lamenting the gradual disappearance of historic gospel records, an investment banker named Charles Royce offered Darden and Baylor enough money to try and save them. Established in 2007, the BGMRP has worked tirelessly to preserve as many songs as possible from the Golden Age of gospel music, transferring the recordings from old, timeworn vinyl to high-quality digital files. Relying largely on loans and donations, the BGMRP has amassed thousands of gospel LPs, 45s, and 78s from popular performers like Mahalia Jackson to lesser-known groups like the Mighty Wonders of Aquasco, Maryland. After they are handled by a small team of engineers in a soundproof basement room, the records are either returned to their owners or stored in a climate-controlled room nearby. Once archived, all music, recording details, LP jacket images, and photos become accessible for free online. Selections from Baylor’s collection can also be found in the National Museum of African American History & Culture, in Washington, D.C., as part of the museum’s permanent collection. Lev’s Gathering Place (named for Baylor alumni and donor Lev H. Prichard III) invites Waco visitors to hear and read about the entire collection on iPad kiosks, alongside display cabinets with original artifacts. Grab a pair of headphones, take a seat on a reclaimed wooden pew, and get lifted up by music from Brother Joe May, Clara Ward, the Dixie Hummingbirds, the Pilgrim Travelers, the Detroit Harmoneers, the Heavenly Spiritual Singers, and thousands of others. Some songs might be familiar, some haven’t been heard in over 50 years, but all are part of history." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Really good place to study. They have a Starbucks inside and a large area to study behind it if you like the "coffee house" atmosphere. If you want to use lots of white board space and study with friends, the basement is great. The basement also has a tech help center if you need it. If you would prefer a quiet place, the top two floors provide large tables to work in silent zones, as well as cubicles to get rid of distractions. You can also check out a key for locking study rooms so you can feel safe about leaving your stuff if you need to leave to find a book for research. There are also computers on every floor to print, write, or look up reasearch materials. All in all, there is a place for everyone to get work done.

Visitor/Non-student POV: Beautiful facility! Diverse reference materials on every floor for gosh most everything! Great atmosphere, welcoming Starbucks Cafe at main entrance; an unexpected yet incredible Black Gospel Archive and Listening Center within library, which I learned is the only one of its kind in the country. Faculty and staff were helpful and engaged.

This library is designed to set up students for success. I studied with my daughter in the pods. It was sound proof and had outlets to charge my devices. These pods allows groups to have conversations in a place where silence is the norm. Every college campus should follow this model. Way to go Baylor University!

I love studying here for my exams, it is just about perfect in every way. Open 24 hours, starbucks, lots of quiet and loud places to study, computers, huge whiteboards. Unfortunately, it doesn't guarantee an A+ like studying in the chapel does so I can only give it 4 stars.

Perfect for every kind of studyer. These have individual desks, silent rooms, group areas, private bays, etc. Plenty of vending machines (some with school supplies too) and phone charging stations. Starbucks downstairs.

Google
Wonderful spot to sit and read, or to reconnect with friends! I love wondering the various floors and looking at the wealth of books they contain. Make sure to hit up the music library if you have a chance!

Google
Awesome library! I love all the hidden study spots. There are so many unique options if you take the time to explore!

Google
Great quiet place to study alone or with friends! I usually go here once a day. I recommend 2nd floor for quiet studying and garden level for studying with friends.

Yelp
For being a library it is not very quiet. Students are loud and disrespectful. It is too small and needs more space for studying, and more quiet spaces. Needs to be updated.

Yelp
Fantastic library! So much history & what a beautiful building. It sits on Baylor's campus and is open free of charge to the public. Make sure to go up to the 3 rd floor and see the parlor. The stained glass is amazing! The students at Baylor are so blessed to have such a wonderful library

Yelp
The most ideal study site on Baylor campus! Moody library is a 4 floor building with special accomodations on each floor! For the talktative and fun you can go to the garden level that houses most of the computers as well as large desks for group work and study groups. For those that need to do more research you can go to the first floor with more books and quiet reading zones. For those that are serious about their study they can head over to the second floor for quiet cubicles and the 24 hour quiet zone where only the most studious students go. Those that are looking for a laid back relaxed study atmosphere can go to the fourth floor for a quiet, yet talkable area with keyboards and headphones for those interested in music. Each floor had an open common area thats open 24 hours to continue to study as well as talk freely. The first floor also houses America's largest starbucks for those that need to stay caffeinated. Being placed in the middle of campus, it is easily accessible and ideal for studying or hanging out!
