If you’re searching for the quintessential tourist trap experience, congratulations, you’ve found it! MooMba draws tourists in with the atmosphere like moths to a flame - beachfront tables, toes in the sand, a front-row seat to the sunset, and waves rolling in just a few yards away. Unfortunately, the food seems to have missed the memo that it’s located in a Caribbean beach town surrounded by fresh seafood.
The ceviche was the saddest excuse for ceviche I have ever seen. What arrived was a bowl of Tostitos sprinkled with a small amount of pre-cooked shrimp and fish that barely even resembled ceviche. About 75% of the dish was straight-from-the-bag tortilla chips. Charging $17 for that requires a level of confidence I can only admire.
The calamari fell equally flat. This tasted like the frozen rings you’d find at a chain restaurant fryer station - more like TGI Fridays than tropical seaside.
To be fair, not everything sank. The chicken kabob was actually quite good - nicely seasoned and flavorful. Unfortunately, it was paired with what appeared to be freezer-to-fryer French fries that would probably be better if you made them at home.
The drinks were mediocre - not bad, but nothing memorable either. In a place known for beach bars and creative cocktails, mediocre feels like a missed opportunity and there are other bars with better drinks at the same price point.
Overall, MooMba feels like a beachside Chili’s with a much better view - a place that reels in tourists with a spectacular sunset while serving food that seems largely reheated rather than inspired. If you’re here for the atmosphere and a drink while watching the sun dip into the ocean, you’ll have a great time. If you’re hoping for memorable food… you may leave feeling a little salty.
