Asheville Restaurants Refining Appalachian Cuisine - AFAR

"I saw that Moose Café is another spot where, in late summer, you might encounter a locally sourced alternative to the time-consuming traditional 'leather britches' preserved beans." - AFAR

Absolutely amazing!! Atmosphere is truly perfect for being up in the mountains and the small locally sold country items of jams and jellies. If its an early Saturday morning they are super slammed but usually only a 10 minute wait. Server was an older lady that seemed stressed but turned out to be fantastic as well and got drinks and food out very speedy! Never had to ask for a refill. We all got the all you can eat breakfast and definitely add the $.99 pancake that's the size of the whole plate! Food is so fresh and tasty! The cat head biscuits are amazing and for sure get some apple butter to spread on those biscuits! The kids always love the 8' tall moose so be ready for some pictures! We drive up monthly just to eat here and see the mountains and then stop by Biltmore for a quick walk around. Dinner is amazing and just as busy as well!! Hamburger steak has so much flavor but could be a little bit flatter and bigger. Love the Moose Cafe anytime of the day!!

We came for Thanksgiving dinner. It was very good. The wait was long but average for Thanksgiving. They have a nice little gift shop while you’re waiting to be seated. The food came out very quickly and was delicious! My favorites were the turkey with dressing and gravy, and the biscuits with apple butter.

Google
We were driving through this area and asked the internet where to eat. The Moose was the first reply! So, here we are! We are so glad this was recommended. It’s very homey inside and they make you feel very welcome. I love that it’s family owned and local. We were right at the cutoff for breakfast and they still let us order anyway which was awesome. The food came out quickly and wow, huge portions! The food was not only plentiful, but delicious!! Had we known it was so huge, we wouldn’t have ordered so much. But it was all so yummy. We were fat and happy when we left. Love it!

Google
What a lovely find outside of downtown. The service was prompt and friendly, and the food was really delicious. I had what’s described as the world‘s greatest fish sandwich. It did not disappoint. The breading was light and wonderful, and the portion was huge. We also had the trout which was equally delicious with very yummy sides. But the best touch is the two buttermilk biscuits with apple butter. The biscuits are fluffy and warm and just delicious!

Google
It was definitely a nice atmosphere. We were seated right away. Our waitress was very friendly and offered us their specials. They give you an abundance of food you won’t leave hungry. Definitely will be back.

Google
Great restaurant! Lots of parking. We were seated immediately. The chicken livers were delicious, tasty sides, and great sweet tea! Our server was nice and attentive. The price was low. The portions are big. If we're ever back in town we will be back. I would recommend this restaurant.

Google
On our way to Kentucky, We found this lovely southern-style eatery outside Asheville, NC. The food was very good, and the staff was friendly. They had a good selection of breakfast menu and side, their signature applesauce, freshly baked biscuits and the Sausage gray were the highlights. Everything tasted fresh, and most, if not all, of the ingredients were not frozen. I ordered their Western Omelet, which came with biscuits and sausage gravy, and I loved everything. and everyone loved liked what they got. The ambiance of the place was homely and bright, and the food arrived at the table quickly without a lot of wait time. I would love to go back when I cross this area again next time. #travel #foodie #SoutherFood #breakfast #Asheville

Google
Such a perfect place for a great southern meal! The country ham is so good. They have huge cat head biscuits that are perfect.

Yelp
Well our food plate was delicious in everything we got. The server was good not too friendly but she was in top of everything we need in the table as a drinks. Place is very nice for family to eat.

Yelp
We were visiting the Asheville area while attending a conference at the Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove. We had about 20 people in our group and they wanted to eat at the Moose Cafe. It was super busy on a Thursday at 1pm for lunch. We waited maybe 15 minutes to be seated. We weren't all able to seat together but we were close by. The waitress staff were super busy and we could tell they didn't have time to play around. Some were short answered and really didn't have time to really wait for the full question. I ordered the Homemade Meatloaf and it was big! In my opinion it was just OK. I had coleslaw and fries with it. The coleslaw was really good! The fries had great flavor. The food came out super fast. My wife order the Vegetable Plate. She said it good! We also loved the biscuit with apple butter (yum and the best!) I would give the biscuits and apple butter a 5 stars!!!! If we were in the area again I think we would come back but I would order something different.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was efficient and friendly. We will definitely eat there again.

Yelp
This is our regular go-to place when we visit Asheville. They have country cooking in a comfortable, casual setting. There is a small gift shop to buy items and they even sell local honey and jams. We didn't have a long wait. We were seated at a booth. They started us out with complimentary biscuits and apple butter. The biscuits were large and as soft as pillows. The apple butter was very light and not very rich-tasting like you normally find. Most meals you get a main entree and 2 sides. My favorite is the fried NC Mountain Trout. It's meaty and fried to perfection. The tartar sauce that comes with it is very good. For sides, I got the baked squash, which did not have much flavor, and chicken & dumplings, which I didn't like very much. It was too soupy with just thin strands of chicken and big globs of dough they were trying to pass off as noodles. All of us got it as a side but none of us liked it. One person got the chicken pot pie and it had good flavor, but the crust was on the bottom, and that was weird. It would have had better texture and crispness if the crust was on top. One person got the meatloaf and holy cow that piece was huge ! It was very light though in texture, not dense and heavy despite the size. The cornbread that came with all meals was very good and a bit sweet. They served beverages in cute little Mason jars. The restaurant is directly off I40, so very convenient and close to Biltmore Estate, Biltmore Village, and the Farmer's Market. It has a nice view and huge windows throughout the restaurant.

Yelp
Food is a solid 3.5 but the staff rounds up to a 4. There was a crowd when we arrived for a late lunch on Sunday but it still only took 10 minutes to be seated, a rarity in Asheville. The servers were all super quick and attentive. The food is classic southern and comes out quick. Chicken and dumplings is a side. The tables are close together but not nosey. Checks are paid at the counter and I think that helps the tables turn quicker. We also love a restaurant with a gift shop that sells apple butter and every size of moose themed decor.
google avatar

Dianne M.

Yelp
Great server! Upbeat and pleasant. It is such a fun place with lots of country decor including a deer head. We all had the Side Plate with a choice of 4 sides. There was a lot to choose from! I had the Collard Greens and Pinto Beans along with other fresh cantaloupe and Watermelon. It came with biscuits and cornbread. Wow! It was all delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
10 out of 10. I absolutely loved it! The service was excellent. The waitress was friendly and helpful. They even had an electronic code to scan and pay at the end. Loved this place. The food was delicious too! Very southern, casual vibes, great views too if you sit by the window! I had the fried fish and it came with the most delicious apples as a side!
google avatar

Jerod B.

Yelp
Wow! Just wow!! I ate a lot of cat head biscuits! Once again, my eyes were bigger than my belly, but I managed to get to taste everything. They bring everything, and i mean everything to the table and it was delicious! Service was great, she joked with us a lot. There were a lot of moose themed decorations everywhere.
google avatar

Cecile A.

Yelp
Hearty American food and setting. Very friendly and efficient service. The dishes are very copious, the food is good. I loved my fried chicken, very tender and tasteful.
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
Felt like the OG Cracker Barrel in here! Servers were all extremely friendly and they move tables quickly. Food was all pretty good and prices even better. Lots of options in their menu too which is great. Their complimentary biscuits probably the best part!
google avatar

Heather P.

Yelp
Excellent home cooking and atmosphere! Only downside was the eggs were very bland/cold. Everything else was amazing!

Cindy K.

Yelp
I use to love this place. The last two times I ate there were not good, not even meh. Their biscuits use to be fluffy and hot, not any more. The meatloaf sandwich was not edible, the fries were cold not cooked throughly and greasy. The fried chicken was dry and luke warm, and the apple cobbler was burnt tasting. They really have issues with food coming out hot. The staff is great. The tea is fresh and good. It's sad, like no one is in the kitchen supervising the food going out. I hope they get it together, it's an iconic restaurant.

Sue B.

Yelp
We had a very nice dinner at a reasonable price. We would eat here again if we lived in the area. Old style cafe food. Obvious many of the locals frequent this place. We got a waitress that I don't think is one of their normal servers. Not attentive AT ALL and didn't even ask if we wanted more coffee. The other thing that is ridiculous is that you have to pay extra to get honey with your corn bread. Also the greens were probably the worst southern greens I"ve eaten - with little taste. They tasted like mine when I make them (a northerner).
google avatar

Walter W.

Yelp
Fabulous food and excellent service. Portions are very generous and the price point is great! Can't wait to return.
google avatar

Tim B.

Yelp
The food is average for country cooking. Nothing stands out as an excellent dish. But the staff are nice, the decor is interesting and they have good service. The all you can eat breakfast is well worth the price of $14.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
The food was amazing & the service was just like talking to a friend. Down home country cooking with hearty portions.
google avatar

Draco S.

Yelp
Great food, large portions and a nice price, the staff was also super friendly. Down home cooking at its finest in a nice cozy little restaurant. The food came out very quickly and the taste was chef's kiss.
google avatar

Becky A.

Yelp
Great service, super friendly and make you feel at home! If you can eat a lot of cheese and biscuits this is your jam-pun intended... but just too much cheese and biscuits for us.
google avatar

Yelp
Favorite breakfast restaraunt in the area!!! If you are looking for that homestyle and hearty breakfast, then Moose Cafe is your final destination. The menu has everyone, no matter your age or health situation, covered. SO many delicious options. Expect to put your name on a list or call ahead (recommended). We've never called ahead, and the wait has been between 5 mins - 15/20 mins. When you enter the restaraunt, walk past the other patrons and find the hostess (don't worry, you aren't cutting in line) to get your name on the list. A lot of new folks won't know this and end up just standing there thinking they are in line or next to be seated. They have private parking and even a big moose that you'll want to take your picture with. Once you are done eating, take a stroll down to the farmers market which is to the right, as you exit.

Charles K.

Yelp
Great breakfast spot! Had a delicious, hearty, country breakfast here while visiting Asheville before hiking some waterfall trails. Food, service, and atmosphere were great. The complimentary hot biscuits and apple butter were sooooo good!

David L.

Yelp
Service and quality of food was sub par on last visit. It was unfortunate but I think they may have lost several of their staff due to Helen
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
I was hesitant to make a return trip here but thought I'd get it another chance and knew not to order the chicken and dumplings as they forgot the chicken last time. I went at a quieter time so there wasn't a wait and I was seated right away. My table had a nice view too. Service was friendly and I was given time to look over the menu. I went with the fish and got fries and spiced apples for the sides. It came with cornbread too. So after the biscuit with apple butter it was a lot of food. The food was all good and the portions large. I didn't finish the meal so no dessert this time. I will stop here again for a bite to eat.
google avatar

Anna K.

Yelp
Affordable prices for very mediocre food. Biscuits were too heavy and not fluffy. Chicken tenders were so lightly battered and dry. Quite disappointed.
google avatar

M R.

Yelp
Not sure what happened to this place. Eggs were undercooked, bacon was undercooked, biscuits were blah, oj does not taste fresh and was served in a very small mason jar, 1/3 full, service was meh and they wanted to charge $2 for honey for tea.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
This is great little meat and vegetable joint located A-town! The joint is clean and semi nice decor. Greeting and service was awesome. The food was great! I had the meatloaf and jacked some fried yard bird strips. A must try.

Shirley B.

Yelp
Food is delicious! Servers are the sweetest and very efficient. Went for lunch and had the chicken salad and pickled beets. I believe it was a lunch special. So so good. Always love coming here when visiting Asheville. Never disappoints. Thank you for a lovely time Asheville. So sorry for the damage that was done by the hurricane and many business haven't recovered but they need tourist to support and get them back on their feet. Still many restaurants are open to delight us. See ya next year Asheville

Yelp
We were traveling with a group, and one couple wanted to stop at Moose Cafe. If you love country cooking, with biscuits, gravy, etc., this is the place for you. Service was good, and the folks were friendly. We are on a more healthy diet, but we were able to find things that would work for us.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here after "doing my research. This is a big place with a full parking lot. I got seated right away, no wait but they were full at lunch time on a work day. Server gets my drink and comes back for order. I had chicken and waffle with added cayenne honey drizzle. My two sides were pintos and chicken with dumplings. The menu is full of country cooking items. Having chicken and dumplings as a choice for side was great. The pintos came with chow chow on the side. A biscuit with apple butter on the side came while I waited for my lunch. It was delicious. I liked everything I had. I will be back. I felt like I had to pick up some produce since it is at the farmers market. Peaches were in season and also good. Get on out to the farmers market.

Yelp
This place is special! The young lady at my hotel suggested Moose Cafe as a great place for dinner. I was seated immediately, and my server was super cool. The food was remarkable. Some of the best southern comfort food you could ever dream of. Even the ice water was great. This spot will be the first place I stop next time I'm in Asheville.

Yelp
During our trip to Asheville, we visited Moose Cafe Asheville. My husband ordered fried chicken livers, and I had chopped steak with gravy; both dishes came with mashed potatoes and collards. The food was well-prepared, the chicken livers were cooked just right, not too crunchy, and the steak was delicious. The dessert--apple cobbler with ice cream--was especially memorable. The sweet tea was excellent, and there were plenty of jams and jellies for sale. The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff, generous portions, and reasonable prices. We plan to return.

Dirk K.

Yelp
Stumbled onto Moose Cafe by chance, happened to be getting gas across the street & googled breakfast near me so we tried it, it was a Sunday morning & my wife & I had been in Asheville on an overnight trip, wow have we found our go to breakfast spot in this area, extremely busy & we know why, only had to wait about 5 mins. for a table, they serve a complimentary biscuit with apple butter & by far the best biscuit I've ever had in a restaurant, service was fast & friendly, I had a ham & cheddar omelet with hashbrown casserole & a biscuit with gravy, a little more than I could finish & I tried to force myself because it was all so good, to the entire staff at the Moose Cafe, keep up the good work!!!!

Renae M.

Yelp
Super friendly staff. Huge portions of wonderful buttermilk biscuits, buttermilk coated chicken, and the Mac-n-Cheese side was creamy and warm. Hit the spot for a quick stop on a ten hour road trip!
google avatar

Diana T.

Yelp
Omgggg!! My husband decided to order take out . We decided on breakfast. The farmers market and the Biltmore. The food was so amazing it put me to sleep afterwards. Everyone was so welcoming inside. The service was amazing. We will be back again !
google avatar

Harrell B.

Yelp
Great fresh food and veggies right by the Western North Carolina Farmer's market. Service is polite and efficient. They pride themselves on their Cathead (more like the size of a moose head) biscuits and apple butter. Great stuff folks. Keep it up.
google avatar

Stephen R.

Yelp
Anytime I come to town and want a home cooked meal this is the place to go. They start you with huge biscuits, served with apple butter. So yummy. I got the fried chicken covered in gravy with a side of okra and fries. Large portions for the price. The staff are always nice. Don't forget to get a picture with the moose. The gift shop has all sorts of items.
google avatar

Joy D.

Yelp
This restaurant was suggest to us by a local. It was an amazing recommendation. We all loved our food. The service was awesome. Our waitress was really friendly and we enjoyed talking to her. I had the blackened salmon. It was really tender and perfectly cooked. I had mashed potatoes and gravy. Also very good. I had spiced apples which tasted like the inside is an apple pie. Before we got our meal our waitress brought us each a huge biscuit with a dish of apple butter. I'm generally it a fan of apple butter but this had similar seasonings as the spiced apples and it was delicious. The prices were also very reasonable. For the amount of food and how good it was, we were pleasantly surprised by the prices. I highly recommend the Moose Cafe
google avatar

Brooke M.

Yelp
Such a gem! The food was top notch and service was on point. You will not go hungry here. They give you the softest , fluffiest biscuits as a starter with their homemade apple butter. The apple butter is so flavorful we couldn't help not buy a jar to take home. The home fries are chunky cubes of potato and lightly seasoned. The hashbrown casserole is cheesy, make sure you like cheese. The biscuit gravy was delicious. The French toast was light and fluffy.
google avatar

Ashton P.

Yelp
Wow, wow, wow. What a great spot. Everything on my plate was delish. After our first visit, we came back and trusted this place so much we tried different things. I feel like I could order everything on the menu and not getting anything bad. The cafe is just such a comforting place and environment and before I knew it, our order came out!! Incredible service.
google avatar

Sara D.

Yelp
I am giving a three star review only because the staff is friendly and helpful. We hadn't eaten at Moose Cafe for a decade and were curious as to whether it had gotten better. For breakfast I had eggs, bacon, and cat head biscuits. Standard fare although I wish the apple butter had been a little spicier. Husband's one pancake filled the plate but tasted like flour and water. Same for the white sausage gravy. I wish we could like this place more. Ambiance is country casual.

Edwin B.

Yelp
We have had a great breakfast here in the past and decided to try it for a late lunch/early dinner, What a disappointment. My wife had the fried chicken - it was rubbery and not hot. I had the meatloaf - the portion was large and it was hot, but I didn't care for the flavor. Cornbread was incredibly dry. Neither of us finished our meals. Service was marginally adequate. GO for breakfast, but not for lunch or dinner.

Yelp
Looking for an unbelievably delicious spot in Asheville to eat breakfast/brunch? You do not want to miss out on visiting the Moose Cafe. From homemade fluffy biscuits with sweet apple butter jam, to cured country ham salted to perfection, cheesy potatoes, thick bacon, hot coffee, and more, this cafe serves the best breakfast in Asheville. Did I mention you have a phenomenal view of the mountains and luscious landscape? This spot is so delicious, that Miranda Lambert once ate at this restaurant and they dedicated the booth to her! Add the Moose Cafe to your Asheville bucket list today!

Kevin J.

Yelp
Less than perfect experience, wait staff was trying to keep up but clearly not enough for the number of tables. Food was not up to par, maybe a little spoiled by the one off Sandy Springs Rd at Piedmont market- but the grits were not fully cooked, and the gravy needed some work. For our stay in AVL this was really the only meal we had that wasn't worth a trip back.
google avatar

Stephanie Ann L.

Yelp
Worst food I have ever tried to eat. Tasted like old grease. Liver was tough ,onions were barely cooked
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
Good home-cooking type food. The biscuits we got when we came in were huge and really good! Everyone enjoyed their food and we had plenty to take home with the large portions. The prices were very reasonable for these days. I would definitely go back if we're in the area.
google avatar

Cashea S.

Yelp
This is going to be a go-to place when we come to Asheville. After a day of skiing, comfort food was in store. The biscuits were warm and fluffy with a delicious apple butter. The meals were large and tasty, with plenty of food on each plate. We had leftovers the next day and it was perfect. I'm not big on fish, but I'm a sucker for local food so the rainbow trout was actually delicious and cooked perfectly. Enough so that I will order it again. The meatloaf made great sandwiches the next day! The staff were friendly and the restaurant was busy, but they stayed on top of drinks. I love the farm to table restaurants and this one is a go to!
google avatar

Riley H.

Yelp
HUGE portion sizes! Ordered 2 eggs but it definitely would have been just as filling if I ordered 1 egg. You get free biscuits with apple butter as an appetizer for the table. The biscuits are SO good!! Waitress was open to substitutions and the food came very quickly. The environment felt like a warm mountain cabin. Took back lots of leftovers! Overall, I would certainly come again! Don't let your eyes be too big for your stomach!!

Yelp
An OK breakfast at this West Asheville spot adjacent to the Farmers Market. The interior is reminiscent of Cracker Barrel, albeit at a smaller scale. You enter thru a small gift shop. Country kitsch on the walls throughout the dining area. Service is quick, friendly, accurate and efficient. A giant warm flaky biscuit is served with the menu, accompanied with a cup of apple butter. About as perfect as it could be - this is a GOOD biscuit amd the apple butter was so good bought a jar in the gift shop to bring home. The menu features standard breakfast fare. I tried eggs, French toast, grits and sausage. Eggs were prepared well, sunny side up. Yolk was slightly cooked and still runny...perfect. French toast was lukewarm and made with sandwich bread. Disappointing. Sausage patties also lukewarm but delicious. Not greasy and not too spicy. Grits nubby and creamy, as they should be. Nothing wrong with this breakfast. Nothing outstanding about it either. Just OK.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Biscuits were excellent. We had country ham breakfast and it couldn't have been better. The eggs were cooked just right. They give a generous piece of country ham. Good fast courteous service. We will be back when we come to town.

Yelp
It's not fine dining, but it surely is yummy dining. Especially if you enjoy southern food. And we are fans! For starters, every time we sat down for a meal they brought us warm, soft, melt-in-your-mouth biscuits with apple butter. Biscuits made some folks who know how to do it. Of course we went for the southern veggie plate ($14.98): collards, dumplings, pinto beans (with chow chow, no less!) and beets. Another visit we enjoyed the same, substituting mashed potatoes and gravy for the dumplings. Each plate comes with a piece of cornbread, also warm and oh-so tasty. Southernness at its yummiest. Add in some unsweet tea and were floating with happiness. The servers are as friendly as can be, and it's obvious why they get filled up quickly around meal times. Like we said, not fine dining, but just plain ol' good food, and we think that rates five stars. (If it matters to you, they are right next to the WNC Farmers Market, a convenient stop for more good local food products).
