Highly recommend coming here to try traditional Popayan foods while you’re in town!
We tried:
-champu (maize drink made with lulo, pineapple, Panela) it was sweet with the taste of cinnamon. The cinnamon is a bit overwhelming. if you don’t love cinnamon, choose one of the other drinks!
-Lulada: made with chunks of lulo fruit, which looks similar to a tomato with a green/orange color. Very tart but highly recommend!
-salpicón payanese: the best local drink! BlackBerry, lulo and guanábano (white tropical fruit). Delicious and sweet!
The small sizes for drinks are tiny, so go for the grande!
Empanadas de pipian: local empanadas made with potato paste and peanuts. They come in an order of 10 and you’re going to want more than one! It sounds like a lot, but they are tiny for empanadas. They came out hot and fresh. It was hard to stop eating them! Served with yummy peanut sauce.
Tamale de pipian: made with corn and the same potato/peanut paste. Served with peanut sauce. It was okay, but the empanadas are definitely better.
