Visited twice in October 2024 with a large family group. As is sensible with a bunch of 10, we booked well upfront and placed our orders in advance. This was an easy process and pays dividends all round.|The decor was suitably gothic Halloween and creepily well done. A lovely old building and full of character. Staff charming, helpful and easier to please. Good range of drinks from a chatty, pleasant bar.( PS. Jeremy Clarkson's excellent beer is available and very drinkable..)|The food came on time and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Starters of Rhubarb gin cured Scotch Salmon and Venison Scotch Eggs with Cumberland sauce were excellent. The standard items like burgers were moist, juicy and tasted great. A variety of dishes further showed the chef's talents well. Pork loin was slightly pink and melt in the mouth, served with a delicious reduction and fine, slightly al dente vegetables. The pastrami beef and sweet potato pie was as good as the excellent venison haunch. |The children's menu features miniature dishes to the same standard as the adult ones ( not the usual inedible McDonalds rubbish 90% of places serve as a "childrens' menu") and our two small guests ate well. I had no room for any desserts but those who did loved them.|We returned for a second evening a few days later and the evening was just as good.|Thanks everyone|Will be back|

We had a 2 night stay with our dog. Staff were helpful and friendly. We enjoyed meals on both nights. A perfect location for walking and visiting the local sites. Looking forward to returning

Lovely dinner here again tonight. Great atmosphere. Friendly bar staff. Food great though sticky toffee pud not as good as last time due to different sauce. Please put old sauce back on menu or have option of new or old because cake is the best sticky toffee pud we have had. Will definitely be back.

Wow what can I say, my husband and I have just returned from our “two night mid week stay winter deal” which we booked directly with the hotel. It was the most unforgettable few days nestled away in the beautiful snowy Hills of the mortal man. This place is truly something out of a fairytale book, surrounded by Beautiful hills, wildlife, near by horses which I would watch every morning from my bedroom window, ducks and the friendly resident house cat this place truly feels like a home away from home plus the benefit of a live in chef! This mortal man is full of charm and impeccable detail everything has been handpicked and special touches throughout our bedroom and the hotel did not go unnoticed. The food was delicious, we had a quiet little spot in the cozy warm bar by the fireplace. The staff were so kind to us and went above and beyond for us really making our time feel so special, their happy festive energy rubbed off onto us! We enjoyed our time so much and spent our whole time at the hotel besides are beautiful morning and afternoon walk exploring the breathtaking Windermere surroundings. Thank you so much to the amazing team at the mortal man you truly left a lasting impression on my husband and I, our few days away with you was so exactly what we needed. Happiest of new year to you all xxx

The food was fabulous all three times we have been lately! Even the vegan food was brilliant, which never happens (especially in the lakes). Great selection of drinks too (larger, gins, ports etc). Can’t recommend it enough, our new favourite local food stop.

Stopped for a pint and some food after a walk. Nice bar, staff friendly and attentive, keeping the fire good. Nice atmosphere, people talking to each other. Will frequent again. Hopefully in summer to enjoy that beer garden.

Fantastic 2 nights stay, actually our 3rd visit to The Mortal Man. Great welcome and check in by Tommy who recognised us from previous visits. Great service on the bar again by Tommy. Donna who was on breakfast was also brilliant, getting my partner some gluten free bread and crumpets. The whole place is dog friendly too so our Lab was happy too. The hotel itself is quirky (being over 300 years old what do you expect) and in a great location, we love the walk over Wansfell to Ambleside (2 hours) for the views, shopping, lunch and a few beers before a taxi back. Thanks again and see you soon.

We had a gorgeous stay here! January is an underrated time to visit the lakes. The scenery is stunning with beautiful snow topped mountains and views for miles. Extremely quiet and peaceful with great views from rooms at all angles.

Yelp
Went here for lunch and the garden had a lovely view. I ordered the Ploughmans and beside the fact it was missing the advertised cheddar, it was very tasty. My husband said his fish and chips was very good. Finding it was our challenge as we did not realize how far down the country lane it would be after the last sign we saw. We stopped and asked and we had just not gone far enough, so when you see the last sign just keep on going and you will run in to it.

Yelp
Though we only had a light lunch comprised of mostly starters and sides, everything we ordered was very well done. The service was warm and friendly, and we were very happy with our decision to visit the Mortal Man for lunch.
