Very good food, including some Knickerbocker items. Great service. Great atmosphere. The primary bartender has been there for many years and is fantastic! I love to go here, either for a meal or to hang out at the bar.

The food was well priced and presented well and the flavors were superb, but one big problem. The largest slices of chicken were still raw in the center. It was redone and the second time the largest piece was same way. They were packed and I supposed in a hurry. It would have been perfect without the one issue. Only impacts the extra large slice of chicken breast. Otherwise perfect

My family dined here on April 27. We ordered ribeye steaks (one medium rare and one medium) and the mahi mahi. The steaks were tough with very little flavor. The mahi mahi was supposed to be blackened and topped with spicy crawfish cajun sauce. It appeared grilled and was not served with the sauce. When we questioned our server about this, she insisted it was prepared correctly, and said the snapper pontchartrain was the only menu item that came with the sauce. We decided against confronting the server further as she was very adamant the dish was served correctly. Needless to say, we will not be back. There are too many good restaurants in Memphis that offer better food and service.

Hubby had Oysters Rockefeller hamburger and loved it. French fries crispy and well seasoned. Son had Shrimp Po boy and declared a winner. My advice. Order from the menu. My daily special sucked. Chicken and dumplings were doughy and undercooked; turnip greens and black eyed peas lackluster. I will rave about the yeast rolls. Very popular place. Loud.

Google
Haven’t been here for a very long time. Today it was pretty good. The Mort Burger with ring was a good lunch and my partner enjoyed someone else’s chicken plate lunch. Hope that’s not a regular occurrence as the plate lunches are a big deal here.

Google
This place is severely overpriced for what it is. We started with a cfawfish dip appetizer that was obviously microwaved because of the taste, consistency, temperature, and speed at which it came out. It wasn't great. The green salad was wilted lettuce with some carrot strips and a couple of cherry tomatoes. The snapper pontchartrain was overcooked and overseasoned. The shrimp topping was just the super cheap precooked salad shrimp you can get at Walmart. The atmosphere was bad. There's a really weird smell when you walk in. You enter through the bar and kind of have to squeeze last people drinking, which is obviously the main attraction of this place. The dining area feels cheap and a half step up from a manufactured building. They had newsmax propaganda on the TV. Never again.

Google
The food was delicious and they were very quick to prepare our food exactly as we requested even though it was a phone in order. We will definitely be returning after all this face mask stuff is over so we can sit down and enjoy the restaurant atmosphere.

Google
Don't forget about Mortimer's! Great food, great people, great patio, and great drinks. They are still going strong with delicious steaks, seafood, and Cajun fare. We started with the bacon wrapped chicken livers (not my usual choice as I'm not normally a liver fan) and yet they were delicious. The catfish is somehow light and rich, the breading is divine and the portion is generous. The bread for the po-boys is tasty and soft (not scratchy on the roof of your mouth) yet still just the right amount of chewy. The fried oysters have a good clean flavor and were a good size for the sandwich. The red beans and rice are always a great side. Try to leave room for a lemon ice box or fudge pie, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Been going for years! Always dependable! Great menu selections. Something for everyone

Yelp
Good service and tasty food! Extensive draft lift and nice group seating. The outdoor patio looked nice, but did not work for a rainy night. Catfish was enjoyable, drinks were good, water always filled and table well served. I would return.

Yelp
Went to Mortimers for lunch today with a party of 10. We sat in the party room. It was very nice and pretty private for all of us since we tend to get pretty rambunctious and loud. Totally forgot to let my camera "eat first". Hahhaha! Our waitress was very nice. She was able to take all of our orders and deliver them with some help from her team. The restaurant is a Memphis staple that has been around for a very long time. This was my first time dining there. When you walk into the restaurant, the bar is at the front. There are many tables and chairs in the restaurant. The decor reminds me of a bar and a local neighborhood eatery. Nothing real fancy but fits many people. The tables and chairs are kind of worn but are adequate. There is plenty of parking. The restaurant was really busy which is a good sign. I imagine there are regular customers each day. They have a variety of lunch specials each day. I love the many choices of sides and the menu is quite extensive. I ordered fried catfish with black-eyed peas and pickled beets. We were served corn sticks with butter before our meal. I had coffee and water to drink. Everything was delish!! My friends ordered burgers, beef stroganoff, chicken salad, soup, a Mahi Mahi sandwich, and veggie plate. Our food was tasty. They are open for dinner as well. I will come back to try more options on the menu.

Yelp
We must have gone on an off night. The food just didn't have a good flavor to it. The marinade tasted water down.

Yelp
Had lunch at Mortimers today. An abysmal experience. It wasn't particularly busy, I arrived just after 1:00. I got up and found my own menu and silverware. A young waiter took my order. I ordered the daily special. All they needed to do was plate it and serve it. Waited 30 minutes while other tables arrived and received food and paid. At 40 minutes I asked again about my lunch. The waiter left and never returned. I asked another waitress to check on the food. 45 minutes after I ordered, a plate of tepid and not very good food arrived. It took almost an hour to get a plated lunch special that was anything but special. I will never return and never suggest this restaurant to anyone.

Yelp
Thought we'd give it try. Staff friendly, helpful and accommodating. Server friendly, professional and efficient. Good. Onion Rings Rolls Food Seafood very average. Potato well done but too much butter. It appears to have a loyal following. Live music at 6:30. Decor out of 1980s.

Yelp
My friends and I went for a quick bite at Mortimer's for dinner and it did not disappoint. The prime rib was very good and delicious. We all loved it along the sides got some: green beans, rice and beans, garden salad, baked potato and Italian spinach altogether. Service was great and our waitress was very attentive and checked on us frequently. We were the first ones there so it was nice and quiet. Restaurant got full but it was time for us to go (perfect timing). Thank you for a nice dining experience!!!

Yelp
Great little quick bite. For was solid, drink was solid, service was solid. It was a quick bite but enjoyable!

Yelp
Mortimers has been around a long time, and I have eaten here many times throughout the years. The food is consistently delicious in my experience. The fried mushrooms, poboys, and the Chicken Beauregard is decadent and so yummy. A singer was here while we ate. She was very talented, and made the experience that much more special. The wait staff is knowledgeable, friendly and very attentive. Great neighborhood restaurant for a date or for catching up with friends.

Yelp
Went to lunch here and food and service was really good. I had the meatloaf and vegetables. Forgot to snap a pic. The meatloaf had some spinach in it which I really couldn't taste but it was very good and I would order it again!

Yelp
Always a go to for lunch and dinner. Sit at the bar when Mark is working chicken salad is delicious (when in season)

Yelp
Casual dining with established ambiance! Seafood options and more. Try the gumbo- it's mild and loaded with okra, shrimp, and polish sausage. Servers are friendly! Love the brick floors! BEST BANANA PUDDING IN TOWN!!

Karen A.

Yelp
Food and service were on point! Will definitely be back. Best French dip sandwich I've ever had.

Pamela S.

Yelp
Everything. Good food, service and ambiance. I just liked the feeling of the inside the comfort easy to park. Good drinks.

Yelp
Nothing about this place says 5 stars BUT ......my family had so much fun! We celebrated my aunts birthday here and there was 12 of us in a private dining room. The server was very attentive and treated us like regulars. Everyone enjoyed their food. I had fried mushrooms which are really hard to find freshly breaded at other brands. The French dip was tender but the au jus lacked flavor. My aunts filet was tender and flavorful. (of course I tried it)!) The building is old and cozy. The private room has old pictures of past golf legends from the 50"s and 60's. Owners should probably update this room And make it a more diverse space for customers. Overall was a great experience. We sent a slice of birthday cake to one of the chefs and he came out and thanked us and wished my aunt a happy birthday. We thought that was nice!

Brock C.

Yelp
The service was great, the ambiance was nostalgic, but the food was just bland. I had the grilled shrimp with a crawfish sauce over dirty rice. The shrimp was a little over cooked, the crawfish sauce was oddly tangy, and it was over the cleanest dirty rice I have ever had. My wife liked her French dip, and the fried mushrooms and pickles were really good. All that being said, nothing horribly wrong, just nothing that stood out.

Yelp
Definitely a popular place on Saturdays. Oysters are fantastic and come to the table so quickly! How can you beat $10 for a dozen. We ended up getting three dozen. Also got the blue cheese stuffed burger which was good, the fries are delicious! Drinks are a bit over priced, but will be back on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service old friends And fun . Greatest Spanish in town. Stick to the oysters Other fish is just ok
google avatar

Brooke W.

Yelp
I've never eaten inside but I did order it to-go. I got the chicken tenders and fries. It also came with a side of coleslaw. The slaw was ok. It was kinda flavorless to me. The chicken was great and you get a lot of chicken. The fries were good. They could've been salted a little more. Also, there were only 8 fries in the box. I didn't mean to count them but there were only 8. For $15 I expected a little bit more but you didn't get a lot of chicken so I think it evens it out enough. If fries are important to you I would recommend getting an additional side of fries.

Allen B.

Yelp
Best plate lunch in Memphis! Friendly service, fair pricing, and a good location. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Yelp
IMO, the fried shrimp is the best in town. I sometimes pick up dinner on the way home. Last week, I went and there was a small charge for "to go" AND a 15% tip added to my bill. I always tip take out, but having 15% added along with a to go charge was too much. I already think their prices are on the high side. I won't be back unless I can eat inside.

Yelp
1st time here! Service was good. Ice tea was good. Cheeseburger was so good. Onion rings were delicious. Everything had such good taste. Definitely will return to try more of the great food they have to offer

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this restaurant for awhile. So my husband and I went. We were almost seated in the dark until I asked for a seat near light. The waitress was prompt to ask for our drink and if we were interested in any appetizers. We ordered oysters which were ok but grainy. Drinks ordered were ok. I ordered the dirty rice and shrimp and he ordered the Pontchartrain entree. The presentation and the taste of my meal was mortifying. The waitress allowed me to change it and I got the shrimp po boy which was tolerable. My husband's plate had fish on it that was very dry. I think the menu needs a revamp. I would not return.

Yelp
The food tasted like Clorox. Wouldn't go back, but the atmosphere was ok. I loved the band!

Yelp
We enjoyed this restaurant a lot! Service was very good, and our server was very friendly and helpful with answering all my questions. Lodge look decor, and cozy. I ordered oysters on the half shell and seafood gumbo, both outstanding! My husband got the catfish nuggets appetizer and it was huge! Catfish was so good! Would definitely go back.

Yelp
Mortimer's is one of my favorite places. The food and ambiance is perfection. Also great for happy hour.

Yelp
A fantastic Memphis local spot. The food and service are always on point. The cheese burgers are EPIC and the oysters are fantastic!

Yelp
This is not my first lunch at Mortimers, but it's been a couple years. My memory of it was that I liked it. What's great about Yelp is, that unless they delete my content, I can remember all the details. I'll write a review to do that. On this lunch, I sat down with a menu and immediately decided on the daily special of chicken pasta while I ordered my drink. My food came within 5 minutes and it was hot and delicious. I enjoyed it very much. I was in a bit of a time crunch and finished my plate in no time. I think I was only in there about 20 minutes. It was awesome. The place had a good crowd too. I guess it is like Cheers, but I didn't stay long enough to make friends. I'll also write myself a reminder that I plan on trying their burger.
google avatar

Yelp
Never disappointed, always consistent and delicious. Service is always on spot, kind and attentive. We enjoy dining at Mortimer's often.

Kenneth H.

Yelp
They have great grilled salmon at 22.99 which is the lowest price point I've seen for this dish and the portion is a little more generous than more expensive competitors. The service is good and if you remember the band Big Star the owners are relations so the memorabilia on the walls profiles this group.

Emma H.

Yelp
Love this place! This is a true Memphis classic. Great wait staff that pay attention to you and listen. Food is yummy.

Yelp
Never really noticed this place until someone mentioned their Tuesday and Saturday deals. Went on a Tuesday for their 75 cent oysters!! My first dozen week not very plump but the second dozen made up for it. Decently sized considering. Also ordered fried pickles and fried mushrooms. Overall pretty good! I would go back again if I was craving oysters.
google avatar

Yelp
Local place love that fact, server was very nice, but the food was ok. It's weird like the food is served lukewarm. We got hamburgers and they were ok but not great. Side of fries is like 10 fries and we got French onion soup (do not recommend). The food is way over priced for the quality and amount food you receive. I don't know it was a very weird experience maybe we will give it another try.... I don't think we will be adding this to our regular spots we visit. I realy hate this because we do our best to only eat at local spots and this one was a big miss tonight.
google avatar

Yelp
Local place. Awesome food and atmosphere. Oysters on Tuesday are great. Steaks are good, burgers are huge. Hidden gem.

Yelp
I have never been to Mortimer's before but suffice to say, when my friend and I popped in for a Good Friday lunch spur of the moment, I was back again a day later for dinner. The knight in armor who graced The Knickerbocker on Poplar from the 1960s until 1985 has pride of place in one corner of the pub room, and the full menu of American dishes is reminiscent of that experience, as the daughter of Vernon Mortimer Bell opened Mortimer's with her father in 1981. The staff is so busy that diners might do better with semaphores on the table, and cloth napkins with cleaner silverware would bring the grade up to an A+. Good food and music.

Laura P.

Yelp
It was so nice to find a restaurant with great food and great service. Prime Rib night! Tried a little of everything. Mahi Mahi sandwich, gumbo, french onion soup, oysters and homemade banana pudding. Everything was delicious!

Yelp
Well...we gave Mortimer's another try even after the mediocre meal we had last time. I believe in supporting local business but they also have to put out a good product for the customer. This time we ordered take-out: two orders of fried mushrooms, two bowls of "seafood gumbo" , chicken tenders, and an order of Buffalo wings. The menu said the wings come traditional or boneless. When I picked up the order the lady said they only have boneless wings . I just said ok since my son was hungry and I was ready to get home. When we got home and opened the box of wings it was basically cut up pieces of chicken tenders in a sweet tasting sauce. (See photo). The mushrooms were fried in burnt grease and tasted burnt and awful, unlike the last time. (See photo) Whoever cooked these should have known the grease was burnt and changed it out. The gumbo was more like a shrimp soup and not like any gumbo I ever had. It lacked flavor and several ingredients; no sausage, no crawfish, etc., just shrimp. The tenders were ok, nothing special. After driving 20 minutes from the house to get home and see this food, we were very disappointed. Not worth driving back down there in icy conditions to argue about the nasty food. I gave them a second chance after the last go-around, but they will not get a third.

Yelp
Very disappointing tonight. They let us sit for 30 minutes after ordering oysters to tell us they had been out of them 20 minutes earlier. Ok, fine. We will order something else. And we sat. And we sat. We literally watched 4 other tables that were seated at least 30 minutes after us be served their meals. We kept hearing from our server that there was a large party in another area. Well then why are four other tables seated after us eating and we have no food? We were a table of 3 so not a large party. When we finally got our main entree (2 Ribeyes and crab cake dinner) we were told they were out of baked potatoes and it would be a while. Once again, I'm watching the table of four next to us that arrived 30 minutes after us eating the baked potatoes that should have been served to us first. We stared at our food another 15 minutes before being brought our baked potatoes and the server dropped my sour cream and butter on me in my lap. Did he offer to bring me more? Nope. Just got me a napkin and left. Food cold and microwaved baked potato not fully cooked. Two long hours for a very disappointing, cold meal. Service used to be better here. Food too.

Mary D.

Yelp
The vibe is very rat pack/ fifties bar and restaurant. The waitress was excellent and quite knowledgeable about the menu which featured old favorites some of which had an interesting twist. The servings were generous. I might have liked them to be a little smaller because there were several things I wanted to try and simply didn't have room for. I guess that just left me wanting to return again in the near future perhaps with someone else as the designated driver so I could try one of the interesting looking cocktails that the obviously experienced bartender was making.

Page S.

Yelp
All around amazing place! Food and drinks are great and workers are nice. Very versatile food options. They can also handle large parties with ease.

Yelp
Great food. Seafood Gumbo, light rue, my fav, little heat, wonderful taste. Best is area. Oysters on Half Shell .60 ea on Tuesday were also fantastic fresh and the sauce was great. Potato Skins...real bacon! Wowsy The rolls.... oh my gosh Stopped by for lunch, heard they have great fries. The fried chicken... unbelievable crispy tasty moist and overall one of the best I have eaten. Step aside Gus... you have been replaced. Mac & Cheese Wowsy! Green Beans... bit too salty for me. Iced tea was perfect and fresh. Fries... really good, but to be honest I could pass. I like crinkle cut personally and kinda expecting that. You will like them. Service outstanding at the bar Love it and will be back soon.

Yelp
While on this side of town we took advantage of our proximity to Mortimer's. We had heard of this old school place, but this was our first visit. The interior is cozy and retro. I tried the French onion soup and a side salad. The spouse was not famished so he got the shrimp salad. The soup was more than enough for me. I enjoyed this bowl full of bread and cheese. The spouse's shrimp salad was a small mound of shrimp salad on a bed of lettuce and some sliced tomatoes. It was small for the $10 price. The side salad was standard and I shared with the spouse since his was so small.

Yelp
Love this place! Food is great and it's always good to see Mark behind the bar. Good for a special occasion or just watching a game and having a cocktail and some oysters.
google avatar

Sanchon D.

Yelp
I come here for the oysters, strictly for the oysters. They are 95 cents on Tuesday's and Saturdays and that's a great price for the area. Nice, fat gulf oysters served with hot sauce, cocktail sauce, and horseradish.
google avatar

Yvette J.

Yelp
2nd time there and both times the food was not right. The first time, none of my food items were seasoned right, felt like I was eating hospital food. The second time was this weekend 3/8/2020, went for the crawfish..what a disappointment. The crawfish tasted like they were boiled in water only..My husband ordered a seafood gumbo, and literately the soup was runny water with little bits of rice floating on it. We also ordered a cheese dip with crawfish, that was the only thing we liked, was the only thing made care. It is a very nice place for drinks and appetizers, that it though.
google avatar

Donna M.

Yelp
Mortimer's is a little bit of everything ~ its atmosphere resembles Cheers. Frequented by 99% locals / Shaded Patio / Full Bar / Great Burgers / Home Cooking / Fresh Seafood / Cajun Dishes / Many favorite recipes that are hard-to-impossible to find these days are from the old Knickerbocker, a 50's Memphis institution. I could go on & on . . . You just have to try Mortimer's.
google avatar

Regina C.

Yelp
A coworker and I ducked in for a quick dessert. We had heard that the banana pudding here was good and wanted to try it. We prefer the custard kind of pudding instead of box. And I have to say Mortimer's seemed a little authentic. Since we didn't eat anything else, I really couldn't give a full review at this time.

Yelp
I've been driving by this place ever since I moved to Memphis. I'm not sure if it was the location or the somewhat questionable appearance of the building of the road, but I never could bring myself to go inside. The other night, I finally decided to go in and I've been kicking myself ever since for waiting so long. The best thing about this place is the atmosphere. It's VERY cozy. Feels like going to a friend's house for dinner. You walk in and the first thing you notice is a seating area with a nice couch under a moose head. I loved it. I went on a Tuesday night and the place seemed pretty busy. Reading the back of the menu, you get to read about the history of the place and the family who owned it. I thought it was a neat story, and it totally made me appreciate the atmosphere more. I had a few Newcastles and the Mort burger. I have to say this is the best burger I've had since Moving to Memphis. It was cooked perfectly, had a neat presentation, and tasted amazing. The only thing I wish they'd done is included a little more lettuce and tomato, but my server was fabulous and brought more out as soon as I asked. If you're in the mood for a great burger at a great place, you've got to check this place out. You won't find a better deal for your money. I can't wait to go back and try something else from their menu.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place however I did not. The good: Excellent service. Nice rustic setting. Cheap 60 cent oysters! The bad: Many oysters had little to no meat. The fish was overcooked for everyone at the table and the food had little to no flavor. The gumbo was extremely salty. If you want cheap oysters and beer this will work but overall I was disappointed.
