"Based in Pretoria, I’ve seen the work of sisters Mo and Michelle Mokone—who run Mo’s Crib and operate a warehouse there—used as elegant woven baskets tucked under sinks and by beds at places like the Silo Hotel in Cape Town and at Singita Lodges. The company, launched after they won the market’s best new product award in 2016, makes laundry and storage baskets, placemats, trays, plant pots and wall art from natural fibers such as sisal and banana leaves, and even a planter basket made from recycled PVC. Their “spark orange” baskets celebrate South Africa’s vibrant visual culture, while a signature black-and-white line—meant to represent different races coming together—is inspired by the humanist concept Ubuntu. Their products are now found in major South African retailers and online; since 2021 they’ve distributed in the U.S. through Crate & Barrel and, as of January, Target, and in September they planned to debut a new banana‑tree‑bark basket at Crate & Barrel.
