20 Places to Visit Along West Virginia's Country Roads

"Made popular by the book The Mothman Prophesies and the movie of the same name, the legend of West Virginia’s mothman has become so well known that this urban cryptid legend even has his own massive statue. According to legend, the mothman is a large mysterious monster who has been seen at various times soaring through the skies in the region of a former World War II munitions site, just north of Point Pleasant. Beginning in 1966, multiple sources started claiming to see the humanoid beast with a huge 10-foot wingspan flying in the West Virginia skies. Legend holds that the creature has huge red eyes and the face of an insect. The mothman’s origins have been attributed to everything from aliens to military experiments to the plain old supernatural. No matter what the mythic creature’s true nature is, the 12-foot tall polished steel statue in downtown Point Pleasant, pretty much assures that that the legend of the mothman will continue to stick in the cultural conscience, which in turn almost guarantees that “sightings” of the creature will continue for generations to come." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Well this was fun. I got to nerd out a little. The museum was also a good place to stop by and check out. The whole town is proud of what makes the unique. This is a must visit again kind of place.

I am from the Huntington area and was born the year the Bridge collapsed. This was my first visit here. I moved to VA in 1988, and I've never had the opportunity to visit, so this was a fun trip. The local history and stories are really cool to hear.

Google
This was a blast! The kids loved seeing the statue and had bragging rights with their peers after. It's only a 2 hour drive for us but we had not made the trip before. There were plates from at least a dozen other states, so we may have been some of the closest visitors. Definitely a fun trip and the whole area is really cool.

Google
It is a very well-maintained and cool statue to visit if you are in the area before stopping by the Mothman Museum and store beside it

Google
I have always wanted to visit but am never down that way. I happened to be driving through in the wee hours and I just had to see the statue. I may have added more on my drive time, but it is worth it...after I sleep. 😆

Visited during the week in August. The statue is an impressive piece is stainless steel craftsmanship. Locals are very friendly.

Google
It's a statue. It's a fun roadside stop. We were traveling and planned to stop here and a few other places. If you are interested in the strange and unusual you should make time to stop!

Yelp
Beautiful little town in WV along the river. Stop on by the cool statue and have some coffee at the cute shop next door.

Yelp
Today we had a wonderful full day plan, that situated around some local sites and activities. We started out with a few local Christmas Bazaars and then went to Point Pleasant, WV to check out the Urban Legion of the Mothman. Kayla Beth Fields and grandkids, Saige & Deacon Hunt, picked me up about 9am. The kids had never heard about the Mothman, so we wanted to share with them the Urban Legion. The Mothman state is FREE to enjoy and take your pics or Mothman selfies!
google avatar

Yelp
Cool little small town attraction with a museum next door and interesting history. Make sure to check out the river walk too

Yelp
It's the man, the myth, the legend! It's a fun statue of Mothman and for some reason the ass is very detailed, but it's a great photo opportunity for solo travelers or for big groups. It is smack dab in the middle of the downtown area and is surronded by more Mothman information, stores and fun tidbits.

Yelp
This is the gem of Point Pleasant. A wonderful, beautiful statue free for all to see. You must stop and take a picture and admire this artwork. Wonderfully crafted and yet horrifying. Only weird thing is it's butt, but honestly, that only adds to it. I always stop here.

Yelp
The Mothman status is really beautiful. The plaque tells the Legend of The Mothman and a mention to the creator of the piece. The Mothman status is easily accessible and a photo op. It was our first stop on our stroll down Main Street.

Yelp
You can read the history of the Mothman in the other reviews, I have nothing new to add. It is a beautifully crafted statue in a sleepy little West Virginia town that now gets some tourism thanks in part to a movie that came out in 2002. I came out because I was in Kentucky and needed to visit friends in Va and it was a neat little side trip. it is free to visit, but the museum is not.

Yelp
Very cute little town. Museum was full of info, if you know nothing about the moth man . Nice little adventure

Yelp
This is a statue of the infamous moth man. He is a legendary creature mythological creature that haunts this little town. I did some research on the moth man and wash them off man movie with Richard Gere from 2002. It's a very interesting concept in this little city has Bangtan on the phenomena behind it and has a statue in a museum it's pretty neat

Yelp
I touched the shiny hinny! Right next to the Mothman museum & the coffeee grinder! You can't miss it!

Yelp
Great landmark to visit and cute little town. Can't wait until the hotel is remodeled so we can stay in this newt town.

Yelp
The Story Of The Mothman, The Legendary Creature That Terrorized A West Virginia Town (Point Pleasant) In The 1960s. there is also a movie and a museum in town. has something to do with a bridge collapse. In 2002, a movie based on Keel's book rekindled interest in the Mothman. In the Mothman Prophecies film, Richard Gere plays a reporter whose wife seems to have witnessed the Mothman shortly before her death. He finds himself inexplicably in Point Pleasant several years later with no idea how he got there

Yelp
Mothman is real, and he wants you to visit and touch his butt! Really though, this is a fun depiction of mothman.

Yelp
It's amazing! Everyone should see this! Not one single picture I've ever seen can't compare to seeing it with your own eyes!

Barbara T.

Yelp
This is actually a nice piece of art! Not in the way of I-want-this-in-my-front-yard kind of art, but more like I-want -to-pose-with-this-thing lol. It's fun during the day, but totally different and well-lit at night.

Yelp
Recommended. Ok, the US is filled with people, here and there, who claim to have seen UFO's, aliens, and other paranormal phenomena. What's interesting about the Mothman phenomenon is so many people in one small town saw it during a relatively narrow time period in the winter of 1966. Does this bolster the alleged reality of the sightings? Was it mass hypnosis? One of us is trained in ethical hypnosis techniques and we can tell you as a matter of fact, that it is statistically rare to find so many deep sonambules on one spot as to account for this type of phenomenon. Well, we find it interesting. This statute to the Mothman is here for a reason: it represents a composite of what so many people saw back in 1966. It's worth a stop. Pix can be tough to get because of the wires and trees in the background. And an added plus? It's right next to the Mothman museum. Don't dismiss this place as a tourist rip off. It isn't. It's free. And wonder, while you're here, how it is that so many in this place, from firefighters to police officers and more, saw a Mothman.

Yelp
This is the place you want to stop and see or make it your destination. The Mothman is alive and well in Point Pleasant, WV!

Yelp
What a glorious tribute to the insane & maniacal myth! Turn that single John Denver song you downloaded on iTunes to repeat & relish the drive through banjo country in eager anticipation of this gem. Totally worth every cent of the $4 per person admission price to see such relics as 1of 3 paint cans used in the movie that MAY have been touched by Richard Gere."Other treasures include napkin holders & a cake plate purportedly on view in a thrilling diner scene. I almost fainted at the sheer thrill of seeing a Wool serape worn by the hamster lovin' thespian. And the excitement didn't end there! They have comic book covers, art from fantastical local talents & even a REPLICA police officer uniform from the days of the Mothman. Many of the other visitors the day we visited were a sight to behold themselves, only adding to the mystique. This definitely makes the Top 10 of Craptapulous Roadside Must See's in America!

Yelp
This statue is awesome! According to the plaque, it is a life-sized representation of people's real-life accounts of seeing the Mothman. The location of the statue is a little off the main drag, but worth it the time. The Mothman museum is just around the corner, as well as a Mothman themed cafe.

Yelp
I've been talking about seeing this statue for months now and I've finally been able to visit it on the ride home with my love. I couldn't be happier.

Yelp
I had heard of the mothman statue, but I did not realize when I was on my way to Huntington, WV that I would run right into it. I was driving though this small town when I was caught completely off guard by this beauty. What an awesome photo-op, history/mystery lesson and short little stop to stumble upon!
google avatar

Yelp
I got to see it!! Near to the museum but unfortunately I didnt have time to visit that. Cool looking statue

Yelp
I don't know there is any piece of art I've ever wanted to see as badly as this monument to the infamous Mothman of Point Pleasant, WV. I've been interested in the Mothman since I was a child and first read about him in a Disney Adventures magazine. I was terrified and refused to sleep with my windows open for years! As an adult, I have a love, curiosity, and passion for Mothman that knows no bounds. I intentionally stayed in the Lowe Hotel in a room that overlooked the statue and I walked out every few hours to see it. It's gorgeous, mysterious, and truly a landmark for those who enjoy the mysterious side of life. I hoped that perhaps my trip to Point Pleasant as a lifelong lover of the Mothman would lead to some sort of encounter with this being, but no dice this time. I'll be back, Mothman. I'll be back.

Yelp
It is a statue, yes. But at times for those who are interested in the weird and unknown it is an object to make a pilgrimage too. Sure it is merely metal, glass and concrete.... And compared to the historical descriptions it is far from accurate... But that's just it, it is awesomeness!
google avatar

Yelp
Love landmarks that are just off beat. This is a nicely done statue. With plenty of informative markers. Great photo opp!

Amy S.

Yelp
Best place in Point Pleasant to get a picture! The museum beside the statue is great, as well as the historical sites along the river.
google avatar

Tina P.

Yelp
Possibly one of the greatest landmarks I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. I really think the detailed chest hair brings the mothman to life in all of his glory.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
This is an awesome statue in my opinion, but I am from West Virginia so I may be biased. This statue was put in place to remember the falling of the Silver Bridge between WV and OH. There was a lot of weird happenings concerning the bridge: UFOs, Men in Black, and this mysterious mothman. I know a man that looks like a moth.... someone is drinking some moonshine haha, but this "mothman" has been spotted all over the world before more huge tragedies such as this one. I would encourage anyone to come look at the bridge, the statue, maybe even some of the places he was spotted, it is a good piece of our weird history. The artist that created our mothman statue passed away a short time ago, I hope his statue stands and impresses many more generations to come.

Yelp
It's a statue, a shiny silver statue! Really don't need say more, except mothman museum right nearby.
