On the Grid : Motorino

"Hong Kong is great for many things, but as a rule, pizza isn’t one of them. In fact, most HK pizza joints will leave you scratching your head, wondering if Italy was just some sort of wonderful dream. Motorino is the exception. With DNA in both Naples and Brooklyn—undoubtedly two of Pizza’s spiritual homelands—this Wan Chai hotspot will restore your faith in this humble pie in Asia’s World City." - Isabel Foo

for my birthday I came here with my friends to celebrate. I reserved a table for a guest of 13 from 6 to 8 PM (around $400 per guest). everything went smoothly and all the staff were really friendly. everything was really delicious and I’m definitely considering coming here again in the future! 😋🍕

The pizza has a thin and soft dough with rich, flavorful cheese that's not overly heavy. And the tiramisu is an absolute delight! The restaurant offers great service and a cozy, vibrant atmosphere. And it seems to be a popular spot for birthday celebrations. But it might be helpful if the menu could clearly mark spicy dishes and vegetarian options for easier navigation.

We walked in at around 7pm on a Friday night. It’s pretty much full house already and the staff offered the four of us to take the bar table by the window which we didn’t mind as we were there for a quick dinner only. Do recommend to book in advance to secure a table since the restaurant was pretty much full house the entire night and the bar table isn’t perfect if you would like to have a proper dinner and chat with your friends comfortably. We got 3 appetizer and 2 pizzas (Mimosa and La Stella), it’s enough for 4 people especially if you are going to order the la stella as it’s filled with cheese and fill up our stomach quickly. Love all the food we got, lovely pizza and decent size. The only thing we didn’t like so much is that the ventilation inside was quite bad and a little hot in the restaurant even in a chilly winter evening. The food choices is pretty limited too, mainly pizza and several italian appetizers only, but all of them of great quality and delicious.

We went twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. For lunch we were greeted at the door and sat right away. A young Italian woman was there who might have been one of the owners. The service was excellent. We had two Negroni, a Caesar salad, and a marinara pizza with anchovies. The pizza was delicious, but came with 4 anchovies which I thought was skimpy, should have been at least five or six. The Caesar salad was excellent. The next day we returned for dinner. We were told they were booked with reservations but we could sit at the bar. The bar is a thin counter in the hall across from the kitchen. Again the service was good, but the pizza (a Margarita and a Marinara) were wet and floppy and not as good as the day before. The drinks were good both days but varied in strength depending on who was making them. Be sure to add the hot oil to the pizza.

We went for lunch with my wife, as an Italian I can’t feel more disappointed. When point out that the “Parmigiana” was literally burnt, they just answer “it’s our standard”. The pizza was good, if not also burnt, a good pizza should have some char, but that too much. Really disappointed, hope they can fix and don’t ruin the reputation of Italian food

Great pizzas in central! We had the La Stella pizza filled with cheese topped with mortadella that was great. However the restaurant charges HK$ 78 for a bottle of water, which definitely is a surprise, since one will expect holy water from the Vatican at that price.

I recently dined at Motorino in central Soho, Hong Kong, and it was an exceptional experience! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, perfect for a cozy meal. The food was outstanding. I particularly loved the **prawn with butter**—it was beautifully cooked and bursting with flavor. The highlight for me, however, was the **four cheese pizza**. It was rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious—definitely a must-try! The service was excellent; the staff were attentive and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. If you’re looking for a fantastic Italian dining experience in Hong Kong, I highly recommend Motorino. Five stars all the way!

Excellent pizza. Sunday lunch time wasn't too busy there. Good for birthday celebration.

Yelp
Motorino is hands down my favorite pizza restaurant. I've been to multiple locations of Motorino, both in HK and NYC, and it's always consistent. A little expensive for pizza, but since I do not eat it often, I think it's well worth it. The brussel sprout pizza is my favorite, and unique (I've never seen it at another pizza place). I'm also into any pizza with prosciutto now it. Make sure to save room for dessert - the cheesecake is fantastic.

Yelp
Came here yesterday with my family. The food was very good and service was on point. We ordered Caesar salad, meatball, shrimp scampi and two pizzas. We also ordered the Pinot Grigio and tiramisu for dessert. My favorite was the tiramisu. It was the best tiramisu I have ever had. so moist and not too sweet. The pizza itself was quite delicious as well, the dough was a little chewier than I would like but overall very good. We will definitely be back. The service was also very good, the waiter kept coming back and refilling our water and wine which I appreciated.

Yelp
Motorino of Blacksheep Restaurants has been our go-to for pizzas close to home in Hong Kong. Serving Neapolitan style pizzas, these have pleased our NY tastebuds or cravings for pizzas here. Having been there multiple times, I was a bit surprised when on this recent visit is when they handed us a stamped loyalty card. I asked our sweet server if this was something new and she said no. I asked her why they didn't inform us of that on our previous visits and she, of course, didn't have an answer, but politely mentioned she's seen us before and that's why she gave it to us. The pizzas are good. They've added cocktails recently here, I reckon. Their menu keeps changing. The one time we had antipasti there - smoked eggplant, my jaw was on the floor with the price to portion size proportion, more because the taste disappointed as well. But the good news is that their pizzas don't disappoint. As with other Blacksheep Restaurants, they have the friendliest of staff. Pictures on the blog - thevegetarianvoyager

Yelp
If you are a pizza lover, this is the place to go! My friend from Naples (the birth place of pizza) swears by this when in Hong Kong. The ingredients they use are topnotch. From the bread, sauce and cheese, nothing but the best from Motorino! Go for the Margareta or the Margareta with mushrooms is my suggestion. This is typical Hong Kong price though. I really hate paying +$100 for a pizza when you know in Naples the very same pizza will cost €3!

Yelp
I have never, ever had a bad meal at Motorino! Food: the food is really excellent. I'm a huge fan of the meatballs, and the margherita pizza never disappoints. The food is light and the flavors are strong enough to be interesting but not strong enough to leave a scent on your clothes. Most importantly, I never leave Motorino feeling that familiar sense of oily, sluggish, self-loathing that I so often feel when leaving pizza places! The only downside is the price. My husband and I share an appetizer, one pizza, a dessert, two beers, and a coke, and that will set us back 800HKD. It's a great spot so we don't really mind, but that's a lot of money for not a ton of food. Atmosphere: cozy little spot tucked away behind the escalator. Not good for large parties since the space is quite small, but great for dinners and groups of up to about four people. Service: great! Friendly, engaging, attentive, and not constantly trying to turnover your table, which is greatly appreciated in a place like Hong Kong where you can't sit down without someone telling you that you need to leave in 90 minutes. Overall: when I'm feeling like having a nice pizza date night, this spot is my go-to!

Yelp
This place is at the mid levels, but the food is definitely HIGH level. Located just off the escalators, it was easy to find and easy to reach as well. Came with my brother on a Friday at noon - not sure if they were fully open yet, but the server was kind and we were seated. Got two of the lunch prix fixe sets (Roasted Squash & Soppressata Piccante for me, Mixed Greens & Margherita for my brother). Also got an Aperol Spritz cocktail, which was a bit bitter for my taste but it was still interesting to try. The appetizers came pretty fast, obviously with the pizzas it'll take a bit longer, but it was just in time after finishing the apps. The squash was a big portion, and was nice and hot, with the squash being pleasantly soft and light. As for the pizza, it was a good portion and covered with toppings. I ordered it a bit less spicy, but of course the soppressata caught me a bit off guard. All in all both pizzas were pretty enjoyable, although the thinness of the pizza made it somewhat sloppy at times. 128 HKD (~23 CAD) for a pizza and an appetizer in a prime tourist location? I thought it was pretty reasonable, along with the cocktail ($89 HKD/$15 CAD) Also, great service! Granted we were the only customers for most of our time there, but the servers were super attentive with clearing plates and filling water. Apparently its way busier for dinner, so maybe take advantage of the lunch specials if you're looking for a pizza fix!

Yelp
Pizza is easy. Good pizza is hard. Fortunately for the intrepid expats of Hong Kong's mid levels, there is a nice little Italian pizzeria right on the escalators. Motorino was recommended to me from someone on GeoExpat. It was a good tip. The pizza has a fluffy crust, lots of cheese and tangy sauce. The only think keeping me from giving five stars is the toppings. Maybe as an American pizza aficionado, my expectations are excessive, but if I ask for sausage on my pizza, I expect more than 10-12 small pieces. Definite go to place, for sure.

Yelp
Lovely place for excellent pizza. We also tried the Thai chicken wings which have such a fabulous array of flavors in fused in them, we spent time trying to identify them! Lovely staff and service. Cool ambience in the "brick wall" area. Definitely will come back!

Yelp
Cool location and atmosphere - came late on Sunday around 11pm with 2 friends. Service was excellent - real quick and friendly The pizza is great especially the spicy ones The crust is one of the best if you like it thick Ask for the pecorino on the side

Yelp
People-watching on the Mid-levels escalators, relaxed and happening vibe, and pizza make for a great night out in Central. My dining partner and I went up and down the Mid-levels escalators twice, peering through all the offerings in the bars, restaurants and cafes alongside the escalators and decided on Motorino, thinking it had a great vibe. Our gut feel proved to be correct and we had a great time soaking up the Soho / Mid-levels vibe. The pizzas are nice by Hong Kong standards (Hong Kong is not particularly renowned for its pizzas so if you're used to having good pizzas, these are average).

Yelp
Bomb-ass woodfired pizzas (dare I say the best in Hong Kong?); decent cocktail, wine, and beer menu; and deliciously fresh antipasti, including a very nice A+ grade arugula salad with dried yellow figs, fresh pear, and some kind of delicious thick cut bacon. Heaven. The waitstaff was attentive, but not annoyingly so. They were also familiar with the menu items and able to quickly answer any questions you might have about ingredients or whatever. It's conveniently located on the escalator, but even if you're too lazy to make it that far, you can thankfully call them for delivery. Hooray!

Yelp
Bye bye Pisanos! Hello Motorino! ( I guess it can be insulting to compare Pisanos and Motorino as there is really no comparison) Such yummy pizza with yummy pizza bread! They cook the pizza in a brick oven. You can see for yourself as you make your way to the restroom! So don't come here starving because the pizza won't appear right away. I don't remember the two pizzas we had but both were delicious. We also had the grilled calamari with cherry tomatoes. It's a little bit spicy but still yummy. You can pair it with three slices pizza bread because the juices from the calamari are just so yummy as a dipping sauce! It's a small place so I'd say 4 people is comfortable, but I think they could manage to do 8 people .

Yelp
Tastes different from the New York Motorino. It's also pricier, id much rather eat at pizzeria italia in Sai Ying Pun or Piccolo for authentic neopolitan brick oven style pizza

Yelp
Pizza restaurant in Soho. Pretty good oven-fired pizza - would recommend the Margherita which comes with fresh buffalo Mozzarella .

Yelp
was staying at Conrad Hilton and was hungry for pizza, but not room service pizza, Found Motorino on Yelp and gave them a try. GREAT pizza fast delivery . I ordered from them twice and the second time I ordered, they sent a complimentary dessert and a hand written note thanking me for my second order.

Yelp
We got two pizzas to share, The Soppressata Piccante and Cremini Mushroom. I really liked the soppressata, but found the tomato base to be a little weak. The Cremini Mushroom pizza looked appealing, though we probably should've gotten the white base, which goes better with the mushrooms. Overall, the mushrooms and toppings were also a little underseasoned. Environment is overall excellent, and servers are attentive. Would recommend.

Yelp
+pepperoni pizza spicy & very tasty +lunch combo improves economics a bit +easy access from escalator +takes credit card -puzzlingly expensive beer ($80hkd?) -salad a bit too acid -20% too loud at dinner

Yelp
Excellent neapolitan style pizza in a hip / modern bistro style setting. Wine, cocktail and beer list were just long enough to staisfy whatever you'd like to drink. I had a Negroni that was perfectly mixed and oh so refreshing on a hot and humid Hong Kong night. Wait staff was a bit indifferent but efficient, and the tables were very close together but I guess that's pretty much standard for HK. $580 for 2 pizzas, 1 cocktail, 1 beer ... not cheap but worth it!

Yelp
Sorry...I'm a bit of a pizza snob hailing from San Francisco. (Look up PIzzeria Delfina in SF or just any pizza place in SF :P ) But my favorite thing about the Motorino pizza was the red pepper flakes that I was able to sprinkle on top of my Margherita pizza....really amazing smokey flavor and just the right amount of heat. no joke. Ordered half side with pancetta. Pancetta was overly oily and not very crispy. Pizza was flavored well and crust was alright, but was soooo soggy. And just soooo oily. I guess if lived in Hong Kong then this place would be pretty good for Italian style pizza, but if you've had pizza anywhere else in the world, it's just mediocre. Especially corresponding to the price tag. Service is mediocre, some server are very friendly, some are a bit cold. Pizza comes out at a medium pace as they are usually very packed. They do not take reservations ( when we called at least ) but we got to sit down fairly quickly. Not the most amazing pizza...but for HK it'll have to do :)

Yelp
Pizza set lunch. Pizza is good. Like the crispy brussel sprouts. Lunch set go with antipasti and drinks. Pizza is so large that 3 gals shared 2 lunch sets

Yelp
Sometimes, a successful restaurant in New York transported to Hong Kong just doesn't work. Thankfully, Motorino does. Motorino has been open for less than two years but sees a full house almost every night - that could be because it's situated by the Mid-Levels escalator. The Ship Street branch is also packed - whether lunch or dinner. I'm going to review the one over at SoHo as I've been there more often. The brick wall facade is every present here and I love the outdoor area posted dab smack in the middle of the restaurant. The atmosphere is convivial and is composed of 99.9% Westerners. That's not to say there aren't any Asians here but they mostly do takeout from what I've seen. The only thing I dislike is that the place is tiny as it is yet the music is always trying to contend with conversations, rendering everyone shouting most of the time. Actually, when a colleague talks to me here, I would only understand half of what he/she said and just enjoy my pizza slice. How do you beat this madness? Either go for takeout or come early when the Central working crowd hasn't settled in. The menu is as comprehensive as it gets, with selections from antipasti, pizzas, wine, beer and so on. The only thing you should fixate your attention on is pizza, pizza, and you guessed it, pizza. It's the only thing you should spend your hard-earned money for, unless you're a trust fund baby. That open-fire brick oven is ready to serve you well. As with any good pizza place, the dough is made fresh everyday. We went for the pizza Motorino is famous for, the Brussels sprout. I like my crusts golden and not carcinogenic so I kindly told the staff how I did not want the crust to be so charred. Thankfully, they gave it a very slight charring only which rendered it crispy. The wine the staff paired with our pizzas was surprisingly good, it was my first time tasting the fizzy red Gragnano. Does it serve the best pizza in Hong Kong? That's subjective, but I can safely say that it is on a pedestal among other pizzas in Hong Kong. The flavor, ingredients, and how it is made is truly important and Motorino recognizes this. I'll definitely be coming back for dinner, well before the crowd begins to gather.

Yelp
It's so refreshing to come to a restaurant in Hong that has great service and great. Greeted with a smile. Seated right away. Drink order arrived within 1 minute. Appetizer served within 5 minutes. And I'm sure the main will be right on time. This place has great food and great ambiance. The management obviously has it all together. Great customer experience. I'll be back.

Yelp
Go here and eat the pizza! It's delicious and the service and music are on point. The spinach and scarmoza pizza was beyond heaven. It's also fun to have a drink here and watch the people go by on the escalator. Highly recommended!!!!

Yelp
I like this place, the staff are accommodating and put two tables together for me and my friend. Fast service. Attention to detail, water refilled constantly and good fresh food.

Yelp
It's one of my favourite casual dinner joints. The pizza is Napoli style, nice chewy crust... If you are not watching your carbs...the Nutella calzone is super yummy. Not on the menu but it was a special that I really enjoyed. Don't opt for delivery... As just not the same when the pizza isn't hot!
google avatar

Cami T.

Yelp
Pizza is not really tasty and they put the minimum ingredients. People is nice but the pizzas are overpriced, the dough was over cooked and its flavor wasn't very good.
google avatar

Yelp
Must try the octopus salad, simply delicious followed by a margarita pizza with black olives and anchovies

Yelp
I'm currently addicted to Neopolitan pizza and Motorino does the best in town... and in the world if you read some online reviews! I live close to the SoHo branch and was lucky enough to pay them a visit on opening night. Since then, I've not stopped going back and am no stranger to a Motorino delivery either. The pizzas have a light base which I prefer as it doesn't take anything away from the toppings. The dough's slightly chewy texture is my cup of tea as well - so much nicer than a heavy, bready base which tend to leave me feeling uncomfortable (and guilty) and more wholesome than those paper thin pizzas that are a pain to eat. Apparently the oven is specially imported and it does a great job of perfectly charring the crusts of the generously sized pizzas. There are a range of toppings for your to make your own creation but I tend to order off of the menu. On my most recent visit I gobbled down a Soppressata Piccante which has a nice chilli kick. The Cherry Stone Clam might sound weird but it tastes amazing and I love to mop up the juices with chunks of bubble crust. The Meatball Pizza is pure indulgence but it's so good, combining two of my favourite foods into one awesome meal... although you can order meatballs independently if you like.. and sometimes I do, along with a pizza of course! Actually all of the antipasti options are delicious although my favourite is the beetroot salad with gorgeous chunks of ricotta. The mint is a great addition - nice and refreshing. What to drink? They say that Gragnano is the perfect 'pizza wine' and who am I to question their advice - bottoms up!

Yelp
Literally a place I go every week. Which is saying something as HK is full of restaurants and eateries so in theory one could survive in this land and never go to the same place twice. The service is awesome (especially when they give you free wine or dessert because they know your face!) The food is tasty and I always get the Brussels sprouts pizza but during restaurant week was able to sample an appetizer and desert - all which was incredible. Both locations are great, but personally I prefer the Wan Chai location because it feels more spacious with the open ceilings. The wine I love is Primitivo and it can only be found at the central location though. Overall you just can't go wrong with this place.
google avatar

Joe+Carla L.

Yelp
Far and away the best Pizza in HK. Orders are made in minutes so it is best not to call ahead to order...instead order in person and wait for "take away." In terms of size, for a hungry couple or 3 persons order 2 pizzas, they are light and on the small side. And "Selina W" It's rather impossible for you to be a pizza snob from San Francisco, sorry. The pizza in SF stinks.
google avatar

Wenxuan Y.

Yelp
Nice vibe, decent service and good food. Price tag is a bit high even by Soho level so not actually worth it given the small portion; this should be a $$$ instead of $$

David M.

Yelp
Pizza is pretty authentic, not too thin, not too thick, arrives fairly fast and conveniently located.
