My favorite experience in Bali was climbing this beautiful mountain for sunrise 🌅 The down hill is pretty loose and slippery so it takes about the same time to go down.

A beautiful sacred mountain in Bali. Please be respectful and engage a local guide, don't be stupid tourists who ruin the place like some who made it to local news for all the wrong reasons; you are not brave, you are not a hero, you are disrespectful morons who think your rules apply to everywhere and ruin good tourism. That's why we can't have nice things. This is a very respected site, locals do ceremonies here. We went with Gung Bawa and he was the best guide, not sure if he is still doing guiding because my climb was done several years ago. He was humble, not pushy, in fact, he would advice you the best thing to do against his business interest. He also surprised us with breakfast made on the peak when we reached there, he could do it while balancing everything on the steep area. Fresh breakfast on 3031 meters? The best! I have climbed a good amount of mountains with various difficulty and Mount Agung is not for the faint hearted. The normal climbing time is short, you can go after midnight and enjoy sunrise in the morning, unlike others that need multiple climbing days like Rinjani, but I won't compare it to Mount Batur, a more commercialized mountain in Bali because the terrain is different. Mount Agung is very steep especially near the peak, where it's flat rocky terrain so make sure you have good footing and keep your body near rock climbing style. We were almost crawling and my climbing buddy was not a fan of this terrain but I love it! Well, at least on the way up because I hate going down. You have to 'let go' of you can, otherwise it would be very strenuous and you would feel the pain days after. We met a group of locals on our way down and they were still pristine with their white ceremonial clothes. There were no other climbers but us, which was really nice. The surroundings was peaceful with breathtaking scenery especially on the peak.

View from the top is once in a life time. YOU DONT HAVE TO TAKE A GUIDE! The locals will tell you you’ll have to hike with a guide and pay for a ticket (100k pp)- it’s falls!! No guide needed, no ticket cabin. The lane is intuitive. Theres pretty much only one way up- and once the road splits it’s only for short cuts, so you’ll end up in the same place. Hike wise- difficult yet breathtaking. Only for experienced hikers, the way down is tiring and long. You go down the same way you climbed up. We are very fast hikers, took us 6 hours to climb including a one and a half hour break. If traveling alone- would recommend to bring a tea maker and quality snacks for a nice bonfire stop. We continued our journey up just in time to catch the sunrise, so we won’t wait for it on the top where it’s exposed and colder.

Hardest hike i have ever done. Be prepared for a 10h (or 12h) hike in total. The way up was hard but okay and the way down was just horribly difficult and hard on the knees. There was no sunrise and no view the whole way cause too cloudy but if you’re lucky then at least you’ll have a view

Mount Agung is a good alternative to Batur or Ijen for fit people. There's much less tourists here. But the hike is not to be underestimated. From Pura Pasar Agung (normal route) its 1600 meter to the summit, from the Pura Agung Besakih Temple ('Edelweis') its almost 2000 meters. Take a guide - its a matter of respect. If you go alone and something happens they have to come and get you. About the difficulty of the track: I would use this description: "Some exposed areas are secured with ropes. You may need your hands for balance. Trekking Shoes are highly recommended. There are steep and exposed sections. The path is mostly well marked but during the night it can be tricky to find". -> if you are a comfortable hiker in mountainous areas (e.g. alps) and have the suitable equipment (notably good trekking shoes) its definitely a great experience! We asked our guide for trekking poles and didnt regret it. That helps a lot. Enjoy your hike and take care.

Beautiful hike. Quite technical for one third to the top with ropes which I enjoyed. Fantastic sunrise with view to the Rinjani. The climb down is also full of beauties, with the perfect triangle shadow of the Mount Agung. Very healing light for all!!

It was a tiring journey, with steep climbs all the way up the top. Once we reached the top of the mountain, the beautiful scenery was breathtaking.

The most incredible views for sunrise at the highest point in Bali! The climb is much harder going down than up, it is very steep so wear good shoes and comfortable clothes, gets very cold at the top before sunrise so at least a jumper/hoody is essential Please use a guide to support the locals! Joining you will be 2 amazing dogs that hike daily, core memories are created here, an unforgettable experience!
