25 Most Beautiful Places in Japan

"Japan’s largest active volcano, Mount Aso is exciting enough in itself, with its near-constant spewing of smoke and 15-mile north-to-south diameter caldera. The gently undulating grasslands of Kusasenri at the foot of the mountains are spotted with ponds and grazing livestock. They're also open for hiking and horseback riding." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Definitely worth going. A live volcano that you can see the crater easily without hiking. Although would be nice if there are explanation of some history and interesting facts.

Mount Aso is an unforgettable natural wonder — one of the world’s largest active volcanic calderas and a symbol of Kyushu’s raw, untamed beauty. We made the journey from Kumamoto to experience its grandeur firsthand, and it truly delivers. 🌋 Crater Rim & Viewpoints Driving up to the rim, the landscape shifts dramatically — rolling green hills give way to dramatic rocky cliffs and steaming fumaroles. From the observation decks, the vast caldera stretches out before you, dotted with distant volcanic peaks. The panorama is nothing short of breathtaking. 🗻 Aso’s Active Crater The crater at the summit remains active and steaming. Though visits are sometimes limited for safety reasons, when access is permitted, it’s an amazing — if slightly eerie — chance to witness the power of an active volcano up close. 🚶 Love the Nature Walks Around the outskirts, there are pleasant walks through grasslands and ridges. One path leads to a high vantage point where you can gaze across the caldera. It’s peaceful, in stark contrast to the volcanic drama. 🌦️ Bring Layers & Patience Weather here is famously changeable. We experienced thick fog one moment, then the skies cleared, revealing sweeping valley views. It’s wise to dress in layers to stay comfortable in the wind and cool air. 🌄 Worth the Trip Mount Aso is Kyushu’s masterpiece — dramatic, powerful, and ever-changing. Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or simply curious, this place demands to be experienced in person.

It was super windy when I visited Mount Aso, so I only got a brief moment to enjoy the view — but I was still happy to see all the main landmarks on the map! Hoping to come back for a proper road trip next time. The scenery is absolutely worth it!

The mountain was very nice but I couldn’t see the crater since there was the eruption warning🥲

" A Mountain Like a Giant Wall " As a Korean traveler, I’m pretty sure Mount Fuji is the first mountain that comes to mind when people think of Japan. But I can confidently say that Mount Aso is just as breathtaking, and easily rivals Mount Fuji. The weather was mostly cloudy during the visit, but just as I approached, the sky briefly opened up. A light drizzle began to fall, and suddenly, a long rainbow stretched across the vast grasslands where horses and cows grazed peacefully. B-E-A. UTIFULL!

Went there on 1/4/25 morning and the gas level was at the safe level to go to the crater viewing point. Only E zone is closed for viewing. The carpark will be at C zone and you will passed by a car gantry when you drive up and pay 1000yen for the car entrance and parking fee i suppose. Once you parked your car at C zone, its only a short walk to B1,B2 and D viewing point. There is a paved road to another viewing that needs effort to walk and hike up which I have skipped seems long and might take additional 1-2hrs depending on physical fitness. I just view around the crater viewing point and it took about 1.5hr to enjoy the view.

Need a good weather to see the volcano, need good luck to see the lake at the crater, we have it all, ultimate good luck.
