enjoying the breathtaking view from the peak of monte capanne seems like a must for visitors of elba. if you cannot make the climb (ca. 700 meters up from marciana) you can take the cabinovia (open birdcage cable car chairlift) right off the strada provinciale, which will take you up to a height of 950m - tickets cost €18 during high season, €12 during the rest of the year.
up there, you will find a little bar with a deck whence you can enjoy the view, but if you want to capture the full 360° panorama, you will have to make a final 69m climb to reach the climax: the full splendor of l'isola d'elba at your very feet.
on clear days, you can see the appenine mountains in the north, with the peak of monte maggiorasca rising above the clouds, the island corsica in the west, capraia and other islands of the archipelago toscano around the elban coast in the near distance. no further spoilers - go see it for yourself.
when climbing monte capanne on your own two legs seems like more fun than having a machine carry you up, you will find a number of routes that will take you through the lively forest that covers its slopes. the best route from marciana (not shown on google maps) starts at the tiny square at the southwestern end of via del giardino & via della rena. here you can fill up on natural spring water and head out on route 101, make your way up the mountain and perhaps choose to return by birdcage-on-a-wire to enjoy monte capanne in full effect - cordially recommended to all of us with strong legs and healthy hearts.
dai dai, ragazzi! andiamo presto!
