Mount Falcon Country House Hotel (County Mayo, Ireland) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"As Irish castles go, Mount Falcon is a relatively recent addition, dating back to the late nineteenth century. This means it’s not wedded to any specific historical details, though, which can arguably be a strength. Imagine adding a range of detached self-catering lodges to a thousand-year-old castle, and the word “sacrilege” comes to mind. In Mount Falcon’s case it’s just a sensible expansion, and a new twist on the tradition of Irish country hospitality." - Tablet Hotels

We stayed three nights in a lovely large suite, located in the original part of the hotel. The room was great. The hotel and the state experience is a bit odd. In the summer months, the lovely interior restaurant area is not available at dinner, and instead dining is in a huge tent — suitable for large weddings and other big events, we suppose, but not what we were looking for or wanted. The four large TV screens showing golf and football were more appropriate for a large outdoor pub than a fine dining restaurant. The dining itself was quite good, and the portions certainly generous. The young staff was doing its best, but one has the feeling that they are not sufficiently trained or properly supervised. The place apparently caters to small group tours, and we saw a number come and go over three days during our times at breakfast. But apart from that, when we were there in mid June 2025, the place seemed rather surprisingly vacant. One very positive memory: the falconry tour we took on our last day. That, and the beautiful suite, made this visit worthwhile. If we were to return, we would avoid the summer months (and the hugs tent) — and enjoy the interior dining room at dinner.

This hotel is fabulous! From the pool, to the lush green grounds, to the beautiful tent with live music on Saturday nights we had such a wonderful time. But honestly the best part of this hotel is the staff who tries endlessly to please and welcome their guests. Book this hotel! You will not regret it!

Lovely hotel, charming staff. Magnificent estate, very well organised. Spacious comfortable room.|Good restaurant, though I didn’t like being in a vast marque, used in the summer months. I guess it makes sense for summer events and weddings, but not great early in the week when only a few tables were occupied.|Do NOT miss the Birds of Prey experience very well worth doing. Only 45-50 minutes but fascinating.

**Wedding Review - Mount Falcon Hotel, 10th May**||From the moment we set foot on the grounds of Mount Falcon Hotel, we knew it was the perfect place to host our wedding. The stunning grounds, beautiful house, and tranquil atmosphere instantly made it feel like the dream venue for our special day.||A huge part of our positive experience was thanks to Alexa, who was absolutely fantastic throughout the entire planning process. Despite us being based in London, Alexa was always just a text or email away, making sure that everything was arranged to perfection. Her attentiveness, helpfulness, and calmness were invaluable, and on the day itself, she was present but discreet, ensuring everything ran seamlessly in the background.||The food and service on our wedding day were impeccable. Our guests are still talking about the delicious meal and the exceptional service provided by the staff. Every detail was taken care of, and the team went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and well looked after.||A special mention must also go to the reception staff and reservation team. They were incredibly accommodating, especially with the numerous changes we had to make to the rooms. No request was too much trouble, and they consistently went out of their way to make sure everything was just right for us.||We could not have asked for a better venue for our wedding. From start to finish, Mount Falcon Hotel exceeded our expectations in every way. We will cherish the memories of our wedding day there forever!

I attended a wedding at Mount Falcon Estate, not only was the food superb, the waitress attending our table could not have been more polite and helpful. Annabelle really made our day so much more enjoyable and personal, caring to our every need. She taught us so much about the local history of the grounds also. Kudos to the Mount Falcon estate for the great staff 👏 will definitely be back.

Absolutely wonderful estate! The staff was all so helpful and friendly, and the food was fantastic. There’s a lovely walking path that encircles the property (about 1.5 miles) which is perfect for an after-dinner stroll. The mature trees on the estate make it feel almost like an arboretum. It was easy to drive to other points of interest, whether into Foxford or Ballina, or further afield — the location makes it a nice base for day trips. The spa is small but well designed and my massage was absolutely top notch. They don’t cater to kids but there is some stuff that kids would like — for example, the pool, a simple playground made of logs tucked away in the forest, and a grassy area for kicking a ball around. Mount Falcon has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that just makes you want to relax!

This was my second stay at Mount Falcon and my first in the main lodge. Ryan gave us a great tour of the property which has a variety of things to do without even leaving the hotel. Fishing, swimming in a heated indoor pool, a very nice spa, walking trails and an on-site driving range! Beyond the hotel, you have at least 4 terrific golf courses close by, the nice town of Ballina, Foxford Woolen Mills for excellent gifts, and the Ceide Fields visitor center and archaeological site on the beautiful north Mayo coast road.||The Kitchen restaurant has been nicely redesigned and served up some delicious food for both breakfast and dinner. The rooms are comfortable and the bar is cozy. All in all, one can't fault Mount Falcon for anything- it is the kind of place you want to stay in when you come to Ireland and it doesn't disappoint.

We had a dinner reservation for Father's Day. Our experience was very disappointing and we won't be returning. First impressions- the summer marquee dining room was beautifully decorated but many tables were uncleared when we arrived. There was loud 'disco-type' music playing on speakers that was not in any way suitable for an intimate evening dining experience. There were two video screens on with a random rte channel but no sound thankfully. There was absolutely no atmosphere. We had a random 5 waiters/waitresses throughout the evening and had to try to get their attention for water, dessert menu etc. Despite the place being less than half full. Although all staff were pleasant only one appeared to be properly trained. We felt totally neglected and considering the price it was a real let down. |Our other complaint is the lack of options for vegetarians. Beetroot salad and Gnocchi. No other options. Not good enough. Food was grand but nothing out of the ordinary. We didn't order steak but thats the focus...its really a steak house. No amuse bouche or even breads while waiting. Not the experience we had expected. Really Really overpriced.

Yelp
This hotel is billed as the most romantic hotel in Ireland, but our view overlooked the garbage and recycle bin area. And the person at the front desk assured me no collection trucks would wake us up the next morning with their backup beeping. But that wasn't true. There were some fans going outside the window nonstop also; I don't know if it was a generator, or a refrigeration unit, or what. But so far I would call it the least romantic place I've ever stayed. That said, it's a beautiful old place with wonderfully renovated bathrooms and gorgeous grounds. But still...

Yelp
Let's break this down... We went for a wedding, and for such an event this place was perfect. 5 star - catered food. Let's face it, if the food is great then everyone is happy! I had the salmon and my partner had the beef. One of the best steaks he's had. Ever. The manor restaurant is highly decorated and worth a visit if you're looking for something special. 5 star- location. Well manicured lawns, beautiful exterior and entrance hall, lovely grounds and nice attention to detail all throughout the property. 4 star- room. We had a superior suite and while the room was large, and pretty well appointed, it certainly comes at top dollar for what it is. Check in at 3 and out by 11am is quite short for the price. 2.5 star - service/attitude. Considering this is an events venue, service with a smile is not the approach adopted here. Don't expect any accomodations for any disappointments or lack or change requests here. I suppose if you're that busy and booked up there's no need to be all that friendly. Steer clear of Valerie, the manager as, even partial refunds for services booked but not rendered go in the tough luck pile. Even though it would have made no difference to the activity, her attitude left a sour taste to an otherwise nice experience. At check in and by the front bar, the attitude is simply cold. Perhaps they've had their fill of events for one season, which is a shame. The friendliest encounter was during the breakfast service, which was lovely. All in all, decent... Great for food and photos, enough said.

Yelp
Another excellent meal in another sweet castle. This one with a helipad. I love Ireland. Obviously, our hosts are showing us the finer parts of the Ballina area. But this house is simply spectacular. I believe a recently redone exterior - nearly new looking - and a restored interior, with immaculate grounds and aforementioned helipad. The dining rooms for the restaurant were really elegant. I believe there's also a hotel in the house, but we're not staying there. Seems like it might be frightfully expensive. Also, you kind of wander in to the house a bit before you find the restaurant, just a warning. Food was as good as the night before at Belleek Castle, but I think with a little more of a foodie/foo-foo twist to it. Presentations were more elegant, ingredients a little more creative, but with roughly the same general results. The amouse bouche was a sort of deconstructed/miniature nicoise salad, with green beans, tomato, and shaved smoked lamb. I don't care about anything else on the plate, the lamb was stunning. Can I get about 5 pounds of that? Beyond the complimentary course, I started with a scallop and black pudding dish, after having been told that if I wanted to try black pudding, I should do so at Mount Falcon. And i was well rewarded. Very flavorful scallops with a nice sear crust and a nice piece of black pudding, which I think was panfried with a little crust on the outside and a very tender inside. The scallops were quite good in a little squash puree, and the black pudding was delicious. I didn't know if I would like it, since I'm not a huge fan of food that tastes heavy in iron (like liver), but it was very good and I'm glad I ordered it. My entree was hake, served with a crabmeat ravioli. This fell down a bit - while the fish was moist, it was not really very flavorful. The crabmeat ravioli tasted excellent, but had several large pieces of shell in it. I know that can be a risk, but it's also something that I've never had happen before. Still tasty, but...I would definitely ordered something else next time. Four of the six of us ordered lamb chops, which looked like a better selection, in retrospect. Dessert was a cheese plate, since they listed four cheeses local to the area, I think all from County Mayo. However, they fail to mention on the menu that the cheese plate really should be for the table - the portion I got would have done all six of us just fine...and two of us at the table ordered it. In the words of my project manager, "If cheese before bedtime causes nightmares...then I'm gonna be freakin' out." Anyway, an absolutely delicious blue, rather sharp hard cheese, reminiscent of a Parmesan, a very mild semi-soft, and some good Camembert, with hearty crackers and a spiced apple chutney. It was great, but I couldn't begin to finish it. And on top of that, they also brought out little lemon curd cups, chocolate bites, and a sort of powered sugar and (I think) lavender biscuit, which was the last thing I ate and a great way to end the meal. Service was good, prices a bit higher than Belleek but still not stupid considering the food. I'd certainly return if I had a guest to impress or wanted a special evening.

Yelp
Disappointing and tasteless. I went to Mount Falcon for a massage in their Spa and then went for afternoon tea with my mother. The back massage that I had was very good, short lived but good. But that's where the goodness stops. My mother and I went to the main part of the hotel for afternoon tea, which was very disappointing. We got our Tea served to us first and by the time our food arrived our tea was cold. The food was below average and the bread was stale. I mentioned it to the waiter and he sounded shocked as they make their own bread. No discount was offered. Aside from the stale bread the fillings were boring and tasteless, the desserts were also disappointing and tasteless. I would not recommend this again.

Yelp
I went to Mount Falcon with my daughter, son-in-law, and their 3 children. We stayed in one of the cottages, but ate all our meals at the great house. I thought the food was delicious, the service friendly, and the pool with its windows on one side, a place for relaxing and socializing at the same time. But what I loved most was the grounds: the little lake stocked with trout, the ducks and ducklings swimming and fighting for territory, the curious but cowardly cows who stampeded away when the children flung grass at them, the beautiful horses running in the distance. Best of all though was the day when my daughter and son-in-law were golfing at Enniscrone and the children and I saw the barn owl. He sat ramrod straight on the arm of the falconer and we were immediately enamored, especially since we were allowed to pet him--with only one light finger. The children and I took a tour of the aviary and saw hawks and ferrets and an exquisite brown dog with curls on his head and body. Very educational! Then we played hide and seek in the woods, which seemed enchanted since spring had arrived and the ground was covered in green--garlic plants we were told, and bright green ivy wrapped itself around the trees while tiny new leaves sparkled in the sun. This was the path we took to track down an old well, a grave yard, and even a megalithic tomb. Maybe the fact my father's parents came from Mayo a century ago prejudiced me, or maybe I felt them watching over their future generations, or maybe Mount Falcon has the touch of enchantment if you only surrender to its charms.

Yelp
Astonishingly wonderful. Everything. Food, service, accommodations. I would LOVE to stay there again.
