Mount Juliet Hotel (Thomastown, County Kilkenny) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"When it comes to genteel living in the Irish countryside it would be difficult to top the Mount Juliet. The 18th-century manor is as elegant as they come, as befits a house that’s a former Earl’s residence. But it’s far from being solely an interior experience. Country-house life involves a healthy complement of outdoor activities — that’s why you bother with the country in the first place. And Mount Juliet’s got you covered here as well, with not just a Jack Nicklaus–designed golf course, but an archery range, an equestrian center, and a cricket club — not to mention close proximity to the River Nore and some very fine fishing." - Tablet Hotels

The estate and hotel is stunning! The rooms are lovely and staff are warm and friendly. We were incredibly disappointed by the spa, the treatment itself was okay definitely not worth the charge of it and for a five star hotel the facilities were just not there. We had dinner in The Hound again the atmosphere was perfect but if you are only going to have one vegetarian option as a main it needs to be good rather than bland. Impressed with the dessert but I would hesitate on visiting again unfortunately just based on the price v value of the spa and dinner.

We'd been looking forward to our trip to Mt. Juliet for months - a next-to-final stop in Ireland after a busy week of travel and events across three countries. ||We were delighted with our second-floor courtyard view room in Hunter's Yard. The bedding was so comfortable, and wandering the magnificent grounds or simply sitting by the window as dusk fell and crows swooped overhead helped lower our blood pressure after so many hectic days.||Unfortunately, there was a technical issue with our room - one outside the hotel's control - that disrupted our stay on the first of our two nights. The team at Mt. Juliet, including the manager at Hunters Yard that evening (Mr. Lynch, I think?) and Jimmy at the Manor House, did everything possible to make up for the issue and ensure that we still had a wonderful stay. Emelie at the reception desk (at Hunters Yard one day, and the Manor House the next) was also phenomenal in her spot-on recommendations, warmth, and joy she brought to our day. She's a star!||We switched to a river view room at Manor House our second night, where the views - and service - were simply exceptional. We left wishing we'd had a week to truly unwind there. ||We had one breakfast each at Hunters Yard and the Manor House and greatly enjoyed them both...not sure how anyone could possibly complain about either in other reviews here! Food and service were fantastic at both, with Hunters Yard more of a buffet (with the option to order off the menu as well) and Manor House menu/table service, with magnificent views at both locations. ||Dinner at the Hound was terrific, with a solid wine list and excellent tomahawk steak (which we enjoyed with the cheesy mashed potatoes and carrots, both a can't-miss). Our server (we sadly didn't catch her name, but she was relatively new and from Sweden) was another staff standout - the perfect blend of warmth, engagement, and professionalism that marked our encounters with most staff at Mt. Juliet. We hope we'll be back, and for a longer stay next time.||Tip: Definitely check out the 1757 Bar in the Manor House! And don't miss the opportunity to stroll the grounds.

Was an amazing quick stay. The 1 star Michelin may have been the best I've ever eaten at. They deserve a 2nd star. Staff was amazing and even drove us into town and picked us up. Rooms were incredibly and we enjoyed the bar as well. The grounds are spectacular. Will come back for sure.

From the moment we arrived, it was top notch service! We were met by David, who not only helped us with our bags, but drove us to see the 70 hunting dogs when we mentioned it would be fun to see them. Our room was automatically upgraded and was beautiful as it overlooked the grounds. We arrived in time for our first ever High Tea and it was delicious at an intimate window table with a view of the garden. My husband went on a guided fishing trip with Dan and enjoyed it immensely. The pool and spa was also very nice. We walked the walled garden and it was very peaceful. It was easy to drive to area sights.

We arrived later in the evening, and the steward at the gate didn’t have our name on list. The car charger wouldn’t work for me as I was using the QR code, bearing in mind I had my 5 month daughter with me and during a storm. We decided to check in and I would go back out. When I asked reception was there an issue with the car chargers, I was told no one had advised them of one and should work - telling them I needed to charge my car so that we could make it home the next day. We got to the room with all of our bags and not once were we offered any assistance, I had a buggy with me. The room was nice and clean, bathroom was a little tired especially around the bath which was disappointing. I went out to go back to the car charger again, in the rain, not one person asked if okay- hotel was dead quiet and there was a girl being trained in. I messaged the car charging app help chat, (they responded when I was back in Dublin the next day) but no reply so I finally figured out the issue. Would be great to advise all guests that the QR codes don’t work on the charge point. We went for a bite to eat, the staff were lovely, but decided we would get room service instead as it was getting late and the bay needed to go to sleep. We called room service and the man that took the order was lovely. Food came, albeit kind of cold, we were very hungry. The Caesar salad was like a soup- it had so much dressing on it, was so disappointed as this was what I ordered and was inedible. I ended up eating the kids food. The cheese bread was not properly toasted with cheese as was soggy and oily. Apart from that all else was nice. Slept well and beds every comfy. They had made up the travel cot for us for the baby with sheets and extra towels which was nice. Next day - we went to pool and were told that we couldn’t go in because kids weren’t allowed until a certain time. Baring in mind there was not one person in the pool or the area as it was so early. We went back to the room and got changed for breakfast, which was wonderful. The nicest staff, although a few issues. My order came out incorrect which they changed no issue, but took a long time. The waiter came to apologise and was lovely. They took 10 mins to set up our table, and left cleaning supplies on it. Avocado toast was absolutely awful - like frozen paste / cheap guacamole. My eggs Benedict had slices of ham - not real h - for a 5 star place I was expecting more. We left and a waiter came running with my babies blanket we left, which was really kind. On checking out we were waiting for a quite a while, whilst 3 staff mergers were dealing with one check in. The bell man saw we were waiting for some time and then came to me to ask room number and checked us out, as our account had been cleared. I had heard such nice things about the hotel, and overall was just disappointed with the service and atmosphere overall.

The estate provides the perfect blend of comfort, friendliness and amazing scenery. My husband and I are traveling around Ireland to learn about the ins and outs of the country. This was a great place to centralize our stay while we traveled around. It was a wonderful place to come back to in the evenings and high tea should not be missed! Kudos to Tom Phelan, the pastry chef and Sean our historian, as well as the rest of the staff for unforgettable moments of pleasure.

Google
Giving one star for the spa. It is absolutely shocking how a 5 star hotel spa have no relaxation room and no easy access to the pool, thermal facilities. The room was so bright and cold. No music in the room so no vibe at all. Thankfully my therapist brought in a radiator to heat up. She was very nice. But the spa is a no experience... just a standard massage service. The "relaxation" room is called the reading room. They don't even serve any sorbet after the massage. It's just teas and water in the reading room. You have to go up a level to be able to use the pool and thermal facilities. There is a small section looking at a small garden as I used for my relaxation (with a nice cholorine smell)...

My wife and I stayed in Mount Juliet for the very first time last night and it was amazing from start to finish.|I received an email from Moya in concierge during the week, prior our stay asking if we needed anything and I knew straight away our stay would be great just from the initial email alone. |We stayed in the Courtyard section and we were warmly greeted by Kareem at reception. He was very helpful and the check in was smooth sailing from the start. |Our room was earlier than expected and it was beautiful. |We then had lunch in the Manor House and Jonathan looked after us very well. |The only thing I’d say was that the air conditioning was very tricky to use and there was a regular, strange noise that was coming from the pipes in the bathroom that did disrupt our sleep throughout the night, but still, it did not deter us from our wonderful experience in this beautiful place.|Staff were exceptional, food was delicious and atmosphere was fantastic.|Thank you to all the staff and we will definitely be back again in the near future for sure.

Yelp
Our stay was absolutely wonderful. The most impressive grounds with many activities to keep you busy during your time at the Mont Juliet. Our instructor for archery, Thomas, was absolutely fantastic. He was very engaged and helpful. Highly recommend visiting.

Yelp
I love this hotel, very upscale, and the service was wonderful! I wish we had more than one night here but off to other adventures we were The food was fantastic and the service even better. My favorite part, the heated bathroom floors!

Yelp
bait and switch!!!! be very very careful about your reservation. all the photos we saw on the ae fine hotels and resorts web site were of the beautiful "manor". imagine our surprise when we ended up in the "low rent' district at the stables .... the room- no larger than a regular holiday inn room. complete with the peeling paint, grout around the tub nasty, hair long black hair and curly when mine is very long and very blonde. the service is lovely, the food very good, the maid service tries hard. but when we expect a high end hotel room and get a ramada inn. i am not a happy camper. this may be a "boutique" hotel. it may be in the "autograph" series but the photographs on the ae web site were all of the manor...and we had no idea that were were not staying there. at check in the girl told me no upgrades and did not say this was not the manor. we had just flown in with 10 hours of delays from the states and drove down from dublin arriving at dusk so i didn't notice the outside i was too tired. no biggie about the upgrades i just assumed we would have beauitful rooms like italy. we just were there 3 weeks ago and the st, regis venice and the lido palace in riva lake garda were huge with all of the amenities. mount juliet ...not so much. so be very very careful when you book here. i mean it. make sure you get the manor house guaranteed. those rooms are bigger and bright and cheery. the rooms in the "stable" are basic with dark purple walls like a cave. peeling paint and illogical placement of plugs for doing hair...not near a large mirror. make up mirror too high for short people. no real trash cans to throw trash from purchases just recycling. over all if you golf, play tennis or ride horses you are going to love it. we were here to relax and we are tripping over suitcases and one person fits in the tiny bathroom. we have been traveling 10 days a month for a while. this is the most disappointing place we have had. hopefully we won't get burned by misleading photos in the next stop.

Yelp
Beautiful, Serene, Elegant, pure Luxury. The Mount Juliet Hotel in Kilkenny is a location and establishment that exceeds our expectations each time we visit. The hotel is run by amazing staff, has beautiful rooms, is located on the most stunning property and has incredible accommodations for spa, golf and dining, walking and just relaxing. There truly is nothing negative I could give this location. If you have the opportunity schedule as much as you can on the resort - examples include. Tea service, tasting menu dinner with wine pairing and spa services. Our tasting menu dinner was outstanding-every staff member that evening was personable, informative and gave us a fine dining dinner that had us feeling like royalty. Our Sommelier journeyed us through his memories of living all over the world and our Chef took us through an artful masterpiece of flavor, texture, color and elegance. We had our favorite dinner here at this location. The Tasting dinner is one of our top 3 we have experienced so far. The Manor House atmosphere was a beautiful combination of old world and European charm. Thank you to the entire staff - we plan to return!

Yelp
Mt. Juliet Estate.. Aaah.. What a beautiful place. Located just outside the town of Kilkenny, Ireland on the river Nore this 500 acre 5*. Country House Boutique Hotel is over 250 years old. It's stunning. The gardens immaculately landscaped. It offers Golf, horseback riding, fishing to name but a few. The main house and adjoining Hunter's Yard which is contemporary in comparison to the Manor house. You can choose which location that you want to stay in. The staff, service ambiance is top notch. It does have a Michelin Star restaurant called The Lady Helen. We decided to eat at The Hound located in Hunter's yard. It was fantastic. An incredible experience not far from my home.

Yelp
Our stay at the hotel was mixed. On one side it was a quite nice hotel. We had a nice room, large windows with a view of the garden, a nice bathroom with bulgari amenities. There was a spa with a sauna and pool. The gym was adequate and there is a golf course with 18 holes and a driving range. The breakfast is nice with a view of the driving range. On the other hand for the price we paid it was not worth the money because we weren't all that much in the hotel and for the same price as the Waldorf Astoria in Dubai for a room per night, it might not be worth it. I would definitely recommend the hotel if you want to golf because then it is very good but if not I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

Yelp
We had a magnificent time. Lovely scenery everywhere you look. The staff is extraordinarily friendly. David and Patrick made my aunt and I feel at home. David acted as our IT guy and Patrick gave wonderful suggestions for places to visit. Thank you for everything.

Yelp
Mount Juliet is a beautiful Estate that was the perfect distance in between Dublin and all he Jameson factory in Cork. We landed in Dublin and drove straight to Mount Juliet. The next day we left and drove to Castlemartyr and it was the perfect sequence for our trip around Ireland. The staff were extremely accommodating and even kept the clubhouse restaurant open later since our flight was delayed getting in. We absolutely loved riding the bikes around the estate and watching the horses through our window. While amount Juliet has an old school feel to it, it's still quite elegant. My two regrets would be only staying for one night and not taking advantage of their horseback tour or falconry.

Yelp
This Estate is absolutely divine. The grounds are just spectacularly well-manicured. The service is exceptional and the food at the restaurant was incredible. I would recommend this estate to anyone coming to Ireland. It was a real treat to stay at this hotel.

Yelp
This is a review of the Lady Helen restaurant. An unbelievable dining experience. If you're the kind of person that likes seven courses and three waiters for four people don't simply pass it by. On the occasion I went, we went for the 'ordinary' menu and not the taster. I think ordinary is a slight understatement: 1) Pre-starter - Mackerel Velouté with a lobster brandad 2) Starter - Duncannon lobster, nori seaweed, lobster mayonnaise and breakfast radishes 3) Palet cleanser - Pear sorbet and almond jelly 4) Loin of rabbit and langoustine, fennel puree, marsh samphire, pickled watermelon raddish and fennel pllen gnocchi 5) I skipped dessert and had a 10 year Glenmorangie scotch instead and finished with a petit four of lemon macraroon, crab apple jelly, blackberry pastille, pistachio cake and poppyseed twill Simply brilliant and not bad value once you get all courses. Only criticism is that perhaps the starters are a little pricey at approx €15 - 18. Otherwise this is an amazing house, with an amazing restaurant on some of the most beautiful grounds you'll ever see. Brilliant!

Yelp
Spent 2 days here just before Christmas 09 as a treat from work but we had to do some work during the days planning our year for 2010. Arrived early enough on the Friday morning to catch the breakfast in the main house. This seems to be where all the bedrooms are located and some smaller dining rooms for the likes of breakfast/dining for fewer numbered groups. With my sweet tooth I went for the french toast with bacon and maple syrup (yum yum), some of the other guys went for the eggs Benedict. Compliments all round. Check-in then is a room off the main lobby/reception area. No counter here but a nice writing desk and 2 work stations on top. I really like the fact that they had wooden encased monitors and hidden cpu's under the desk. Therefore nothing looked out of place when surrounded by all the opulence. Some of the guys are staying in some chalets beside the main house. Room key acquired (one of those with a huge brass keyring attached so you don't forget about it on departure). bit of a trek up to the room but well worth it. HUGE room and tastefully decorated. Large double bed and all the usual features. Loads of space which included a sofa and a couple of armchairs. Bathroom nearly as big with a full size bath, complete wall mirror on one of the wall and the triple sized shower with waterfall head was the icing on the cake. Not sure why you would want a triple shower..... Off I trot to the "conference centre". Nice 5 min walk up the slight incline with the amazing lake and gold course on my left. The course wraps around the top and to the right of these groups of buildings. The conference centre is part of the golf course club house which has a bar, large dining room, pro shop etc. Nice courtyard feature here too. Our meeting was held in a number of rooms that you could obviously are being used just as an afterthought. You can clearly see that it's not designed and equipped professionally but did the job. Lunch was bar food which was nice but looking at the menu not inexpensive. We positioned ourselves in the sun room which runs along the front of the bar overlooking the golf course. Fantastic. Smoking areas out of most doors and also it has a covered walkway along one side of the bar. Main dinner that night was in the newer and larger dining room in the club house. Large open fire and wood abounds but not overdone. Tasty and staff very friendly/helpful to specific request. Steak a good choice. Pints in the bar afterwards and drinks into the night. Hard to be on time the next morning showed a good night was had by all. A great place to visit, stay, eat, drink, play.

Yelp
Very nice grounds, and the older building with the top shelf restaurant, reception and finer rooms is quite appealing. Our room was on second floor of a building in another area about 100 yards away that was ordinary but adequate (and costs less). Breakfast in Kendell's room downstairs was a disappointment both days, and dinner and drinks one night at President's bar (also downstairs form our room) was okay. The pasta would have been great if not overcooked. Formal dinner at Lady Helen was quite good and service appropriate to fine dining. You should request a table by the window in advance, as the view is spectacular. Overall, hotel staff was friendly and helpful. Hotel is a little bit out of town, which was good for the rustic surroundings and we did not care to drive anywhere for dinner each night anyway.

Yelp
We stayed at Mount Juliet in May 2014 in the Juliet House and had dinner at the Lady Helen. The stay, food, grounds and staff were the highlight of our trip. If anyone is going to be traveling in this area make sure to stay at Mount Juliet; it will only enhance your trip to Ireland.
