Mount Longonot is an impressive stratovolcano located in the Rift Valley of Kenya, about 90 kilometers northwest of Nairobi. Standing at an elevation of 2,776 meters (9,100 feet), it's surrounded by the picturesque Longonot National Park, a haven for diverse wildlife.
The mountain features a remarkable caldera, approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) wide, with a vibrant floor lush with vegetation. Its last major eruption dates back to the late 19th century, around 1860. The hiking trails, characterized by their steepness and rocky terrain, attract adventure seekers from all over.
I recently had the opportunity to hike Mount Longonot on February 16, 2025. The trek around the crater spanned about 13 kilometers. While it was challenging and a bit tight in places, the sweeping views made it all worthwhile. I recommend bringing plenty of water and wearing non-slip shoes for safety. The entrance cost is $26 for foreigners and 300 KSH + 50 KSH for locals.
The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to October and January to February, to fully enjoy this beautiful destination. Whether you're an avid hiker or a nature lover, Mount Longonot offers an unforgettable experience!
