Visiting Tokyo: 3-5 Day Suggested Itinerary for 2025
"For a nature escape I like the Mount Mitake area in Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park — you can take a cable car and hike to a shrine on the peak, continue to waterfalls or even onward to Mount Otake for longer treks." - Matthew Kepnes

"I recommend hiking Mount Mitake for an accessible nature escape: reachable in just over an hour from Tokyo, the park offers cable car access to a shrine near the 930‑meter summit and onward hikes to waterfalls or on to Mount Otake." - Matthew Kepnes

"Easily accessible from Tokyo, this one-day hike combines vibrant autumn colour — ginkgo and maple leaves — with cultural highlights and historic shrines. Time a visit between 19 October and 24 November to catch the Autumn Leaves Festival, which features events such as the Sky Violin Concert, a Tenku Geisha Night and the Sky Ninja House where visitors can watch real-life ninjas training." - SilverKris
Beautiful views from mt mitake and mt odake. Shrine is very nice and the small winding roads through the mountaintop town are very unique.
The other trail sections that go to the falls and around the park are beautiful aswell.

Very nice hike suitable for beginners! You can drive all the way up to the cable car because there’s a convenient parking lot. Kei cars might have some trouble driving to the top because it’s very steep lol be careful on icy days there’s lots of signs warning of slipping!

A wonderful hike up Mt. Mitake to visit the temple at the summit. Start by taking the ropeway up, then head to the tourist information counter to pick up maps and details about the trail. Be sure to visit the Rock Garden—it's a highlight of the hike. There's also a large rock you can climb for a bit of fun. The round trip takes about two hours.

Great hiking and shrines to visit
Cable car is ¥600 one way saves 1 hour on foot, but the beautiful forest is worth the walk with all their sacred old trees

Anyone can easily reach the summit by taking the mountain train. The streets near the summit were old-fashioned and interesting. It is not that crowded, so you can take your time to explore the nature.

Easily accessible by train. Good for a day trip outing. Can take the Cable cart too. Need to walk a bit to reach the Nanayo waterfall. There is a place mentioned as Rock Garden but actually there is no specific Garden such as instead the route to Ayahiro waterfall is surrounded by rocks and the water stream in between that is the Rock Garden.

I can really recommend Mount Mitake as a day trip from Tokyo. Breathtaking views. Just remember that if you take the last cable car down from the mountain you will miss the last bus to Mitake train station :)
