"Set the scene Set in the shadow of Mount Mulligan–a sandstone monolith 10 times the size of Uluru –on a 70,000 acre working cattle station in remote Far North Queensland, it’s the sort of place that inspires outback fantasies. What’s the backstory? This is the third lodge and the missing link for the Northern Escape Collection, a family-owned group that owns high-end lodges in Queensland’s most coveted natural corners: rainforest (Daintree Ecolodge), reef (Orpheus Island Lodge), and now the outback. It may feel like being in the middle of a vast nothingness, but there’s significant history etched into this rambling patch of landscape. It has been occupied for some 37,000 years, and the Mount Mulligan township, which boomed on the back of the gold and coal rush in the 1920s, is now a relic town. The few hundred locals dispersed when the mine shut in 1957, but the bones of a few buildings remain as a reminder of a once working community. Mount Mulligan Lodge opened in 2019 and is now in its new pastoral era as a cattle station and beautiful lodge allowing guests to partake in the going ons of a working farm. What can we expect in our room? All eight bedrooms, spread across four pavilions, offer a super-preened take on the quintessential Australian farmhouse, with iron roofs and timber verandas. Inside, it’s modern and handsome with chestnut tones and dark green timber finishes, butter-soft leather and generous brass and stone bathrooms. The sliding doors lead to private decks with deep corrugated iron bathtubs that look like old abandoned water tanks, overlooking the eucalyptus-fringed weir and beyond to Mount Mulligan. Each room gets its own electric buggy to whizz around the property. There’s no Wi-Fi in the rooms and that is intentional—this is meant to be a switched-off experience—though digital diehards can wander to the main pavilion to connect. How about the food and drink? Everything is included and emphasis is placed on local ingredients with 80 percent of the produce from the region and lots of wonderful Australian ingredients like wattle seed, finger limes, kangaroo, and even Vegemite on the menu. For supper, guests can choose to dine under the stars, by campfire or in the main pavilion. There’s also a huge variety of mostly Australian wine and spirits. If you choose to do excursions during the day, there will be picnics with homemade scones, jams, and just-warmed pastries. What’s the crowd like? With a maximum of 16 guests at one time, you may not see any other people. It’s not unusual for visitors to be doing two if not all three lodges in the Northern Escape Collection and you might even find that some have flown in on their own helicopter. What’s the neighborhood scene like? It sort of goes without saying that there isn’t one, but oh, the surroundings. They root you so firmly in your destination, the almost incalculable miles of eucalyptus forest… It’s a little head-spinning in fact, the sheer expanse of burnt-orange sandstone mixed with the endless scrubby green trees can feel a little overwhelming at first, but you quickly get used to the cosmos-like space. The difficult part is coming home, anywhere else feels slightly suffocating after a spell in the outback. Prepare for your street to look like toy-town in comparison. Anything to say about the service? Multi-talented. The small team is hands-on and are part ranger, part concierge, and part waitstaff. You can be on a cattle muster and served canapes by the same person on the same day. The staff all live on site so this is a lifestyle, not simply a day job, and you can feel that energy with everything they do. Anything else to add? Activities like cattle mustering, fishing, hiking, four-wheel driving, and scenic helicopter flights may be the draw card, but don’t miss spending a couple of hours by the pool doing nothing. Anything you’d change? A spa would be a welcome addition. Is it worth it? Yes. The Australian outback is hard to reach and few people have traveled it, so it feels like a privilege." - Chloe Sachdev

We stayed in the tents and had a fantastic time at Mt Mulligan. The tents had AC that worked well and were very nicely decorated with plenty of space to unpack and feel comfortable. You get golf carts to go back and forth to the main lodge and it's super quiet with beautiful views. The only thing I would love to see is a bigger mirror in the bathroom. The one provided is super tiny. ||The morning excursions in high end version of ATVs and trip to the coal mine village were really interesting and fun. We liked that we had afternoons to explore on our own, relax, play games, or schedule an additional experience. It's nice and quiet and relaxing. All of the facilities were top notch and the chefs prepared wonderful meals each day and night. The staff in general was great. Highly recommend doing the dining under the stars experience. We were there for 3 nights and could have stayed 4-5 easily. The views are stunning and you never tire of them.

From the moment you enter until the moment you leave everything is perfect. The staff’s attention to detail, the food and the absolute beauty of Mt Mulligan will not disappoint. We loved the hikes and activities on offer and also enjoyed the quiet time.

From our dusty arrival to our relaxed, no rush departure, I can find nothing to fault at Mount Mulligan Lodge. As we pulled up at the lodge we were greeted by the managers, James and Phoebe, with a chilled glass of champagne. |The location of the lodge is idyllic, set at the foot of Mount Mulligan or Nirrabulgan, the escarpment is steeped in ancient aboriginal mythology.|While our luggage was whisked to our room we were introduced to the head chef, shown the facilities then left to relax and enjoy ourselves. |As this was a special occasion, following sunset drinks at the sunset bar, we were lucky enough to experience ‘dining under the stars’ the degustation experience, set on the edge of the billabong with moonlight reflected on the water. We met Cami, our sommelier, with her bight smile and wonderful wine and cocktail recommendations for a match to each of the flavour sensations produced from the kitchen. A memorable evening, well worth booking for something extra special. (tip: don’t eat the little brown snacks in the jar, it’s for the turtles) |Our lodge room had an expansive verandah with a rustic outdoor bath and a view out onto the billabong and the escarpment of Mount mulligan beyond. It’s well worth getting up early for the riotous birdsong and to watch the sun turn the rocky face of the mount a soft pink. |Our guide, Lydia showed such enthusiasm and was keen to share her learned knowledge of the flora and fauna, history of the gold mine, the towns and their people, and sharing the stories of the country’s indigenous owners. Don’t miss the ATV self drive day and be prepared to get ultra dusty. It’s a must see for the views of Mount Mulligan and beyond. |And what a hoot!|The food and wine needs its own review! 4 days of world class cuisine featuring local, fish, seafoods and produce. For its isolation, the kitchen turns out some wonderfully fresh high quality fare. The Lodge, station and surrounds are also a nature, a bird lover and historians delight with plenty of walking trails to explore. |The service and quality was certainly turned up a few notches from any 5 star resort I’ve ever experienced.

Wow, what a place! Mt Mulligan is absolutely world class and has so much to do and see if you want that or it is the perfect place to just relax and unwind. The rooms are gorgeous and the common area and pool are spectacular, but one of the best parts was the team that looked after us. Oh, and the food is outstanding also. All and All an absolute 5 star destination.

Robyn R has so perfectly described our experience at Mount Mulligan and so I will just say treat yourself and book your stay. ||And if you can, take the helicopter ride in and out. The team at Nautilus Aviation are terrific. ||To the staff at Mount Mulligan: every single one of you were wonderful and really made our stay a very happy one. We are still glowing from our outback adventure, and we really can't thank you enough.

Rare is it indeed to find total perfection when choosing a place to stay.Mt Mulligan is indeed such a place with stunning views, beautiful architecture that fits perfectly into the environment, a remote sacred location, cuisine to rival any Michelin restaurants in France and 5 star service. Unlike other lodges, our three days and nights got filled with wonderful interesting and fun activities. Visiting in late June was an ideal time as there were no insects, only birds and what a variety! The staff have a slogan “not a problem “ this is adhered to from our arrival to our departure day. Our accommodation was more luxurious than SOL, Saffire and Sequoia, that’s saying something. Moet and cheese platter waiting on our arrival and mini bar restocked daily, all part of the included rate. We did not chopper in but took the 4WD option which was fine as we were given clear driving instructions. Mt Mulligan is remote but it is really worth visiting and I urge anyone who wants a unique experience to visit.

I spent 5 amazing nights in an outback tent in the shadows of Mt Mulligan in June, and as the title suggests, it was the last minute holiday I didn’t know I needed.||From the team leading you on the daily activities, or creating and serving you delicious meals and lovely wines, to those behind the scenes, the people who look after you at the lodge are second to none. They are all amazing and each deserve individual kudos.||The completely optional daily format the lodge offers is excellent. Each day, you can participate in group activities such as an ATV tour, a visit to the local gold and/or coal mine, a station tour, or seeing Mt Mulligan turn the perfect shade of red while watching the sunrise from a premium vantage point, or you can do absolutely nothing at all. It’s entirely up to you, and there’s no pressure.||If you do enjoy the morning activity (and I recommend you do), the rest of the day is yours to relax, read, wander, swim or sleep, until sunset drinks and dinner beckon.||My decision to visit Mt Mulligan Lodge was entirely last minute, but its effects will be long lasting. And with any luck, it won’t be my last.

Well everything was ok until departing. The helicopter ride that was included in the Mt. Mulligan lodge was cancelled. The manager of Mt. mulligan assured us that everything would work out fine and we I’ll make our flight departure in cairns. All along the employees knew that this was NOT the case. To save themselves money they booked a plane for us leaving when other guests arrived (knowing we would miss our departure flight to Sydney anyways). This caused our family trip to Sydney a total disaster as everything was turned upside down!!!
