"Cool Cocktails with the Movie Set Belmond’s Cape Town hotel The Mount Nelson is locally referred to as ‘The Nellie.’ The hotel’s funky Planet Bar maintains a buzz unexpected in an hotel that’s celebrated its centenary. Enjoy the palm trees and pretty gardens in the central courtyard or the lovely decor inside, as well as a cool cocktail surrounded by a cosmopolitan assembly of movie crowd, locals, and hotel guests."

13 Best Bars in Cape Town

"At Planet Bar in the renowned Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in the Woodstock area, the drinks menu reads like something out of the “Great Gatsby,” with the classics of yore in heavy rotation. The plush interior straddles the line between historic glamour and modern kitsch, making this bar the perfect hideaway were James Bond ever to find himself in the Cape shores. And not just because of the decor: There are martinis made every which way, from shaken to stirred, vodka to gin, dirty to strained." - Seth Shezi

A fantastic experience at The Fountain by Planet Bar. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warm smiles and a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere. The setting is beautiful, making it a perfect spot for both a casual drink and a refined dining experience. Chef Luke and his team have created a menu that truly impresses. Every dish was full of flavor, beautifully presented, and made with high-quality, fresh ingredients. The balance of taste and texture in each bite was spot on! The cocktail selection is also excellent—creative, refreshing, and perfectly crafted. Whether you’re here for a full meal or just drinks, you’re in for a treat. A big thank you to the wonderful staff at Mount Nelson! Friendly, knowledgeable, and always attentive without being intrusive. Their hospitality made the experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommended, and definitely a place I’ll be returning to!

Have been visiting the Planet Bar for decades and the refurb has really been a big step forward. The decor and ambiance are improved, fresh new furniture; look and feel but in keeping with the magnificent Mount Nelson. The whole team are super smart, friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable and efficient. The drinks selection is much improved with a really good selection of bubbles and wine by the glass. My “go to” bar in Cape Town for sophisticated “pre’s”.

Amazing experience at the Mount Nelson hotel. Extremely friendly staff, couldn't help enough. Very pleasant and helpful. WiFi was good. Usual Ruckus performance. The network could be a lot more secure, but otherwise, it was okay. Food was out of this world. I actually can't say I've ever had a platter like that before. I think the food was delicious, definitely worth coming a second time for. Tea was freshly poured. The hotel had over 40 flavorful teas to choose from. Presentation of everything was great, loved the glassware used. Live piano players made the atmosphere extremely relaxing. An overall pleasant, warming and inviting environment. From the door to the table, everything was clean. A remarkably sanitary building, even the bathrooms were spotless. Highly recommended for a visitor staying overnight, or a local having launch/ afternoon tea.

As the chef, you cant burn a piece of toast and then only serve the guest about 45 mins later, after the rest of her group has eaten. Shocking!! Plus at those prices, I expect something far superior!! Not cool Planet Bar. Wont rush back!

My family and I had the most wonderful time at the fountain restaurant this weekend. We came in for a late lunch and our waitress Nambitha provided us with the perfect recommendations as we were unfamiliar with the menu. The restaurant served Mediterranean cuisine and it was tapas style. The food kept coming and the drinks kept flowing effortlessly all in the oasis that is the Mount Nelson Hotel.

A top tier upper class experience. The planet bar is a lovely space to have a drink from their extensive offering, and catch up with friends. They also offer some light snacks with your drinks which was thoroughly enjoyed. After visiting the planet bar, we enjoyed a spectacular 3 course meal on The Vernadah with Chef George Jardin. Received a complementary glass of rosé. The food was lovely. The service at both the bar and the Verandah was outstanding. Thank you for having us!

An impromptu visit in search of a location with a cosy fireplace. The arrival was warm and friendly, and we were met by a friendly female front of house which showed us through to the bar. On arrival, they were a little slow in attending to us and getting us our first road. The waitron was professional and friendly, though. A slight miscommunication led us to getting complimentary snacks and not a menu. However, a few minutes later, we requested again and ordered some food. Post the food and one additional check for drinks, we had to hunt our waitron down as we needed to leave. All in all, a good night was had just wish the service was a little more polished for non-resident visitors as they are for guests of the hotel.

We stayed at the Mount Nelson Belmond hotel and had drinks here every night of our stay. Great friendly bartenders, nice vibe and of course amazing cocktails. We loved hanging out here talking and having great cocktails! Highly recommend!
