Yelp
Ugh.
I've heard so many good things about this place, so in our recent trip to Salida, my husband and I figured we'd kick off the cold morning with a warm dip before exploring the city. We chose to pay just for the morning, so this review is for the day only - not staying at the resort.
Okay - I hate to be the hateful reviewer, but this spot supremely overrated. And I mean SUPREMELY.
The GOOD:
++ I'll admit, tucked into the valley of Nathrop, Co, the view is stunning and filled with snowcapped mountains, lush pinery and feels as though you've stumbled upon a gem of a spot.
++ Makes for decent Instagram photos!
++ If you stay at the resort, you get 2 free days at the hot springs!
++ The grounds are decently maintained and offer plenty of room to spread out via lounge chairs, ect. While we opted for a locker, there were plenty of patrons leaving their belongings out and about with no worries at all - creating a safe space!
The BAD & UGLY:
-- There is a drastic miscommunication between the website, signage out front and the staff. The website stated the admission rate was $35/adult with a discounted rate for children and seniors. However, upon entering the compound, the signage outside the bath house states that each person is to be charged $50/person on the weekends. However, the woman working the front desk charged everyone $40/person which was interesting and weird.
--The $35 gave access to all 7 pools throughout the property, according to the website. BUT the only access available for that rate was 2 pools (both mildly warm) and the Creekside option. I was most interested in the creek option, as it's insane to me that a pocket of hot springs and creek can be in the same river but divided by rocks. So naturally, we gravitated there first. There is NO, I repeat, NO stairs, walkway, ladder, etc. to get down into said creekside area. In fact, it was a little sketchy to see folks scaling the walls/down slippery boulders of rocks to get in and DEFINITELY not for those who have ailments or disabilities. My husband, who was recovering from an ankle injury, had trouble maneuvering through the pools, as they are packed and with the awkward rocks, was really pretty stressful. OYE.
-- The Adult pool and additional 3 pools (for a total of 7) are only offered to those who stay at the resort. Because we wanted to rid ourselves of the children, we asked about heading across the bridge. For an additional $60 we could enjoy the other pools. UM NO.
-- Staff is extremely uneducated on the processes, procedures, and seemed relatively out of it throughout our encounter. The woman up front was friendly - sure - but repeatedly stated she didn't know what day or time it was to charge things properly, was also the bartender and seemed utterly confused on most things.
-- All towels are $10 with a $5 back when you return them along with a $7 locker rental fee. When my husband "checked out" as she had mentioned all cards were held for a "tab charge", she cocked her head and said "okay". When asked if we could return the towels shortly, she stated we weren't allowed to leave with them. I asked about the $10 charge for towels (because we got 50% back upon return) and pointed to the blue bin for us to discard our towels. Awkard. Note to self - bring own towels and there is plenty of room to stash your stuff among the pools.
-- The space, although spread out, gets pretty crowded fast and the layout is truly awful. With people coming from every direction and doors to the stairs for pools, it causes quite the commotion and frequent bumping into others.
Overall, I was disappointed in this pricy experience, but I justified it as an "experience" worth seeing when in and around Salida. Next time - go elsewhere, unless you're willing to shell out a pretty penny for the good, bad and ugly.
