On the Grid : Mount Royal Bagel Factory

"Memories of sticky and sweet Mount Royal cinnamon bagels still linger in the minds of the local Fernwood community. Quality and good service has been constant. We like the honey vanilla cream cheese along with a dozen mixed bag of Bagels. Though sold around town at groceries and corner stores- you really need to come here to the source for the freshest supply. Being from Montreal, I can attest that these are very authentic flavour and recipe (other than the wood fire ovens at Fairmount Bagel). A great institution for the City of Victoria.

Google
Yummmmyy bagels! We have been getting our bagels there since we’ve found out about this bagel shop. They are soft, moist and delicious! Don’t get me started with their homemade cream cheese! So far we’ve tried the sun-dried tomato, lox and honey vanilla cream cheese and all three have been nothing but A M A Z I N G! The honey vanilla cream cheese caught me off guard at first because it smelled like yogurt but once spread onto the bagel, it was so creamy, sweet and nutty! One of the best cream cheese I’ve ever tried.

This little hole in the wall in North Park that packs a huge punch. NY quality bagels and the most decadent cream cheese flavors. Not a huge sweets person, but the cinnamon bagel with the honey vanilla (which tastes like cheese cake) is a swoon. Also love mixing the dill with lox spread on the everything 🤤❤️

I like to go here as a treat. The cinnamon bagel with the honey lavender cream cheese is to die for. The everything bagel with basil garlic is wonderful.

Google
The bagels aren't great but they're OK. Best we've found in Victoria. The cream cheese is very, very good... softer than the norm...almost seems a little whipped...and lots of smoked salmon in the tub we bought. Strangely, there was no smell at all in the place. Never been in a bakery before that didn't smell wonderful. It looks like they bake the bagels there. Maybe not?

Google
Grabbed some fresh bagels on the way out of Victoria. Had a great variety of bagels and cream cheese. They also provide plastic knives which were a great help. The only disappointing thing was that the bagels were warm like I hope they would be but I brought them back to toast and they were great.

Google
Best bagels ever! Grew up in Victoria getting a bag with my family almost every week. Now living near Montreal and these put St-Viateur to shame! Their cream cheeses are amazing especially the one with herbs and the vanilla spread. Tried many Montreal style bagels over 13 years and these are still the best.

They won’t warm up or slice the bagels so only good to buy and take home :/

Yelp
Always interesting to find a place that claims to offer Montreal style bagels. We stopped into Mount Royal Bagel Factory after having an ice cream at Cold Comfort. They have another location in North Vancouver (but prices are higher). We dropped in two afternoons while we were in town. It's an order and go type of place. 10 types of bagels and 7 cream cheese flavours. Bagels are $1.50 each ($2.60 for a cheddar bagel), $7.25 half dozen or $12.45 for a bakers dozen. They let you mix & match everything except for the cheddar. - Basil & garlic ($6.95 large) - good amount of garlic. Texture is smooth and thick. - Half dozen ($7.25) - three sesame, cinnamon, everything and onion. Bagels have a nice chewy texture. Didn't love the onion. - Bakers dozen ($12.45) - 10 sesame, cinnamon-raisin, onion and everything. Sesame is always my go to. They don't beat Montreal's bagel institutions but it's the best I've found so far in B.C.

Yelp
Freshly baked and chewy. Tasty. Fast friendly service. With the open kitchen, it had the ambiance of being right in a bakery, which I enjoyed. Just one quibble; I ordered three cinnamon raisin bagels. And when they say raisin, they mean it; each bagel had one single raisin in it. Definitely room for improvement there.

Yelp
I was so pleasantly surprised by this unassuming bagel factory. I came here originally wanting a bagel sandwich and left disappointed when they were mostly selling bagels on their own. I got half a dozen - 2x sesame 2x poppyseed 1x everything 1x multigrain. And man, I fell in love with these bagels - so fresh and oh so delicious, absolutely perfect for making your own bagel sandwich at home. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Ambiance: 4/5 Service: 4.5/5 Food: 5/5 Overall: 5/5 Love this spot! My boyfriend and I were looking for a quick bite in the morning and decided that a bagel is what we were craving. We got here around 10 on a Tuesday morning and only had to wait for a minute or so as one person in the store grabbed their items (only one person is allowed inside at a time because of social distancing protocols) The bagels were all in bins behind the counter and they had a bunch of cream cheese options in a fridge as well. We decided to go with three bagels: an everything bagel, cheese bagel, and cinnamon bagel. For cream cheese we did the basil & garlic for a savoury kick and honey vanilla to go with our sugary bagel. Everything was delicious! You could tell the bagels were made fresh today and the cream cheese was super good as well! As for service, the lady at the counter was really nice (even as we stood there debating bagel options for a bit) and recommended cream cheese options for us to go with the bagels. Overall, an awesome lil spot to grab bagels - we will definitely be back!

Yelp
This is a great bagel, I definitely recommend! The ambiance was beautiful and it was very calming to be in there, Their bagel was delicious! The service was also amazing.

Yelp
Bagel flavors were really creative and fun to try. I personally like mine a bit fluffier but I loved trying the new flavors. They were clearly being freshly made and there were tons of locals there which is always a good sign. The cream cheese was out of this world. Especially the vanilla honey cream cheese. I didn't like that you couldn't customize it or have it toasted since we were on the road. A toasted bagel and a tiny bit melted cream cheese is the move but sadly we weren't able to experience that. Makes more sense for people who just want to grab some to take home and can fix themselves rather than people like us on the go. Prices were fair.

Yelp
Closest thing I've had to East Coast bagels love them, I bought a dozen bagels, and they were gone in less than a day

Yelp
I'm a NYC transplant with an appreciation for Montreal-style bagels. This place is awesome! Just devoured an everything bagel with lox, dill cream cheese, capers, onions, and cucumbers. My husband had the Reuben, which was also delicious. My daughter had the Banana-rama, which was a cinnamon bagel topped with honey-vanilla cream cheese and sliced banana. It was more like dessert than lunch, but soooo good! I noticed people leaving with large bags of bagels. I imagine you could freeze them. They also had a fridge full of their assorted cream cheeses by the tub. So many of my friends who move away from the NYC metro area complain about not being able to get a decent bagel. Thank goodness for this place! We will be back every weekend.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. Better than ones I have had in New York. Highly recommend. If we were not just visiting, we would be back.

Yelp
Great bagels and great service! We were recommended Mount Royal by a friend. My hubby loves bagels so we thought we'd order a bakers dozen to take home to Vancouver to share. My favourite is always the everything bagel anywhere I go and this one didn't disappoint. We also got a small thing of basil and something cream cheese that was pretty yummy too. I'd definitely want to try another flavour next time. If you've been to Rosemary Rocksalt in Vancouver it's kind of the same thing (but Rosemary Rocksalt is a bit better imo). All the ordinary flavours here at Mount Royal with a popular one being cinnamon sugar and cinn sugar raisin. I prefer savoury over sweet so next time I'd stick with the savoury. Overall great bagels. Eat them while they're fresh!

Yelp
Dang that is an awesome bagel! Lots of flavor, a bit sweet, and cheeeeeewyyyyy! Yum. Great service too.

Yelp
While not quite as tasty as Solly's in Vancouver, Mount Royal produces a fairly good approximation of a Montreal bagel - smaller, denser, and sweeter than a New York bagel. Mount Royal supplies a number of supermarkets in the region (Thrifty Foods, Market on Yates), but this location is their no frills factory, with only bagels, homemade (presumably) cream cheese, and a few different types of pop/soda/whatever for sale. The flavors tend to be more traditional - there are no blueberry bagels or pizza bagels, but they do have (not very good) whole wheat and multigrain offerings. And at less than $7 per baker's dozen, Mount Royal offers some great value.

Yelp
It has been a really long time since I've been here and I was so excited to go and pick out my bagels for having guests come this week. Unfortunately when my mom and I went today that experience was ruined by one of the worst experiences of customer service I've seen in a long time. We were not taking a long time to decide at all and there was no line outside and yet the women working there had zero patience for the fact that we needed to consult the menu. She visibly rolled her eyes at my mom when my mom took longer than half a second to decide how many sesame bagels she wanted. When we changed our mind from 6 cinnamon bagels to 4, she was so obviously irritated that she chucked one of the bagels angrily at the bin, which missed and landed on the floor, wasting that bagel. She did not smile once and her body language made it clear she wanted us gone. My mom and I were very kind to her the whole time, wishing her a good afternoon, etc and got nothing out of her. As someone who has worked in customer service, it is not too difficult to pull it together enough to be at least somewhat pleasant even if you are having a bad day- someone like that should find a different job. That said, the bagels and cream cheese are absolutely fantastic, just wish the quality of service matched the quality of food :(

Yelp
It feels like you're buying from a side shop off an industrial bakery or a small warehouse, and that's probably fair to it. It's not going to wow you on anything but the product on-offer, but it'll wow you all the same. In a slightly-remote area that's no fun to walk or drive in, it may be better to stock up on bagels delivered to nearby groceries, but it's worth making the trek to see the massive sheets of fresh Montrealesque goodness. The varieties are true to the Montreal experience, and that's lovely. To an American it's a likely to be a little surprising how barebones the menu is, but it's a functional sort of place. Grab your bagel or a dozen, stock up on smoked beef or some such at the Polish deli, and go make yourself deliriously-happy on the way to a slight carb crash in the near future.

Yelp
Gotta give this bagel shop strong praise! The service was impeccable. They opened early for us. They explained everything they had to offer. The prices for bagels and cream cheese or just bagels was very reasonable. Now to the taste! I had a poppyseed and my friend got a sesame. I had the honey vanilla cream cheese and he had the dill. Both of us INHALED them. He went back in to get 6 more. Go there. Your appetite will be very satisfied!

Yelp
I love this spot! Fresh bagels, good service and they always have on great music in here. I love the cinnamon bagel with honey vanilla cream cheese so much that I rarely try anything else.

Yelp
Best Bagels west of Montreal without a doubt. Poppy seed, sesame seed and cinnamon are my favorites along with the awesome lox cream cheese they make! Fantastic!

Tim L.

Yelp
I don't normally leave Yelp reviews, but this place is outstanding. The bagels are crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. They are freshly made and perfectly seasoned. We went back to get these bagels three straight days. Great assortment of cream cheeses, including cilantro supreme, lox, plain, honey, etc. The owner is a standup guy - super kind and helpful. Glad I found this place and excited to go back when I'm in town next.

Cheryl C.

Yelp
We have family and friends bring us these bagels when they coming over to visit us on the mainland!! We prefer to buy our bagels plain, sesame seed or poppy seed so we can choose to do sweet or savory fillings. I have to disagree with Mathew; I've tried Solly's and they just are not as good as Mount Royal bagels. Cheryl C., Abbotsford, BC

Yelp
The fellow behind counter on March 22nd is not providing any customer service. I waited at the counter while he had a five minute conversation with someone at the back door and then when he did get my order he left before my debit transaction had been approved and never di come back to give me a receipt. I'll never be back! Good luck Mount Royal bagels!

Steven M.

Yelp
My favorite place, especially if you go early in the morning and get them when they are warm. I love the Cinnamon. The cream cheese is fantastic as well.

Claude B.

Yelp
Best bagels in Victoria, get there early though and get fresh hot out of the oven. They also give you a bakers dozen, when buying a dozen bagels.

Eric H.

Yelp
A bagel factory outlet with little other than great bagels, and that's enough to keep me coming back. My favourite bagels in Canada are from Fairmount in Montreal. Mount Royal makes a slightly different bagel, a little more consistent in shape (than Fairmount) if that matters to you. I love this place for purely great fresh bagels. They also sell them at For Good Measure in the Cadboro Bay village next door to Pepper's grocery but I like to take an occasional trip to their origin at the factory.
