10 Best Ranches and Lodges for Families in the American West - AFAR

"An historic working guest ranch established in 1929 and located a half-hour from Yellowstone, this 17,000-acre property offers 33 log cabin accommodations—many dating to the 1920s—designed in a rustic‑chic style with rough‑hewn beds, stone fireplaces, and large verandas. The experience emphasizes unplugging (limited cell service and no in‑room TVs) and customizable activities for all ages and abilities, including hiking, horseback riding, boating, trout fishing on Big Creek, hayrides, and cattle work. Communal dining ranges from casual barbecues to five‑course tasting menus featuring bison tenderloin and blackberry cabernet sorbet, while the Saloon hosts live music and two‑stepping and a Wellness Center offers massages and an outdoor heated pool." - Jennifer Flowers, Nora Zelevansky, Devorah Lev-Tov

If you’re looking for an epic ranch resort to take your family, look no further. Mountain Sky is truly incredible!! We had an amazing week there as an extended family of 18 people from ages 1.5 - 70. The kids program was a real highlight. The kids were so happy to attend and it gave the adults the peace of mind to truly enjoy the vast amount of activities. The horseback riding was a real highlight, as were the delicious adult only gourmet dinners, and fun dancing with live music at night. The staff truly went above and beyond to make sure we had a blast! They were so personable, attentive, and action oriented. Thank you mountain sky family, we loved our time at your very special resort!

We had an amazing time here. It’s a truly special place where the lodge, staff and mountains were awesome. They really care about doing it right - and having fun too. We did a ton of horseback riding and people of all ages in our group absolutely loved it. The people here are truly great - everyone from the wranglers to the front desk team. I’d highly recommend this spot!

Incredible in every respect. The cabins are well appointed and comfortable, the food is gourmet, the staff is friendly, extremely helpful and well informed, and the children's and teen's programs are great fun. The horses are well cared for and the riding is not just butt to butt, the wranglers teach one to be a better rider and loping across the plains is exhilarating. The ranch offers a breakfast, a lunch, a dinner ride and a working ranch ride, a ropes course, golf, and skeet shooting.

Our favorite trip each year! The staff are the most carefully curated collection of wonderful human beings with excellent warmth and customer service mentality, the food is exceptional (new chef since one of the bad food reviews 5+ years back) and they are very accommodating to dietary needs like celiacs for one of our family members. The property is lovely, the horses are well taken care of, the amenities are just what you need. My husband golfs all day and loves it! It’s so quiet there he can play 18 holes in under 2 hours. Every year I wish I could stay and remain a cow girl and not come home! If I am going to fault it for anything, our cabin location surrounded by trees makes it a little dark inside but that is really it!

We traveled to the ranch with 4 couples for the all-adults Fall Adventure week and had a blast. Everything, from the facilities to the food to the service and activities was top- notch. Can't say enough good things about the management (Josh & Dillon), Office Staff (Sam and Alexis), Wranglers (Dustin, Ella, Emily, MaryRose & Garrett) and servers (Malia and Hannah) that took such good care of us during our stay and went above and beyond to make the week truly special. We participated in so many fun and well-managed activities like horseback riding, archery, clay shooting, fly fishing and (my personal favorite) the beautiful spa. The therapists (Victor & Anya) were incredibly knowledgeable. This is a must-do while on property. The ranch is well-located, in close proximity to both Bozeman and Yellowstone, and the facility and grounds are the absolute perfect mix of rustic and comfortable luxury. Golf being included was a plus & the course is breathtaking. Highly recommend Mountain Sky if you are looking for a high-end ranch experience that is top of the line!

After two challenging years visiting Mountain Sky, the ranch is back to delivering the kind of experience we'd been accustomed to enjoying for many previous years. The riding is still superb, the setting spectacular, and the complex series of rides offered with meals runs smoothly. There are a few kinks: lunches are odd combinations of food, the baking is uneven (you can tell when Pam is doing her great baking,) and the service is leisurely and untrained. The yoga class needs to be more challenging - guests kept falling asleep - and one day no teacher appeared for 7am yoga.||However, real strides have been made and the quality of the food overall is impressive, especially at dinner. The cabins are immaculate and luggage gets moved instantly; Alexa at the front desk is great. Overall, we had a great time and will be back next year!

We just came back from a week's stay at the Mountain Sky Ranch and it was a truly unforgettable experience for the entire family! This was our first stay at Mountain Sky and our group consisted of 3 generations of our family ranging in age from 7 to 75.||||The ranch is situated in a beautiful mountain setting with breathtaking views in every direction and offers a wide variety of activities for every age group. The riding program is world class and offers many different riding options for riders of all skill levels. Our group consisted of 5 new riders that were riding for the first time and we enjoyed two meals rides (lunch and dinner) and a morning ride. The wranglers we rode with did an excellent job of teaching us the basics of riding and making us feel comfortable during the learning process. The rides we were able to experience will not be soon forgotten and as a father there are not many prouder moments than seeing your 11 year old son decked out in cowboy boots and a hat, grinning ear to ear while living out one of his childhood dreams on the back of a horse in the mountains of Montana!||||Another highlight of the trip was the Rising Sun Golf Course. This course is world class and is as private as golf gets, our group played it twice during our stay and both times we were literally the only group on the entire course. It is 5 Star all the way and if you are a golfer, it is not to be missed!||||The spa and wellness center at Mountain Sky are top notch! We enjoyed several massages and our whole family thoroughly enjoyed the heated swimming pool and large hot tub and our kids loved the milk shakes and popcorn that are served daily in the pool area. We found the food served at the ranch to be excellent and especially enjoyed the BBQ served at the dinner ride and the Friday night seafood buffet.||||Last but certainly not least I wanted to comment on the staff. The staff at Mountain Sky makes you truly feel at home and part of a big family! They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and welcome and are the key to the whole experience, we genuinely thank you for all that you did during our stay to make memories that will last a lifetime!

It doesn't get much better than Mountain Sky's location, resources, facilities and hospitality, but what truly sets this place apart is the staff. Alexa is an unbelieveable host and her ability to treat you as the only guest on the ranch is truly unique, she remembers conversations and emails months prior and works tirelessly to ensure that your experience is second to none. Pete is another wonderful employee who earnestly wants to deliver on your every expectation, anticipating your needs and delviering on a very high level. We have visited Mountain Sky 3x over the last decade and what keeps us coming back is their ability to evolve with the times, but to not lose the rustic charm and simplicity of mountain life. We consider ourselves very fortunate that the Mountain Sky team has opened up to us over the years, and if you have the opportunity to join them, you'll understand what I mean.

Yelp
Mountain Sky has been our dream vacation for the last two fall seasons and we've rebooked for 2017 already. My wife and I just wrapped up our second stay with them for an adults only 5 night stay. The ranch is truly like nothing else we've experienced. At the beginning of your stay the head wrangler catches up with you and pairs you with 1 of their 130 horses that are wonderfully trained and cared for on site. The food is one of the major highlights for me and you will enjoy plated 3-4 course dinners each night, with several entrees to choose from at each meal. The cabins and amenities are great, but what really makes your stay special is the people, both the staff and guests, that you spend the week with. I can honestly say it is the best customer service experience I have had to-date, and that doesn't do it justice, because you leave there feeling like family. Things to consider: 1. The Guest Ranch appears pricey to some and we definitely agree that it's a considerable amount of money to spend on a 5 night vacation. That said, we left both years satisfied and without any regrets. 2. We have only visited in late September and early October near the end of their season. Both stays had at least 1 day of rainy weather. You can ride horse and do most activities even with rain, or just read and drink coffee next the a roaring fire, but weather and timing of the visit may be something to consider. 3. Alcohol is not included but the bar is very generous and has a great wine list. That said, we've brought special bottles of wine to the ranch to enjoy with dinner, without issues.

Yelp
Incredible location, accommodations, horses and staff - not cheap, but worth every penny.

Yelp
This was one of the best trips I had ever been on! The kids got to do what ever they wanted and we had everything at our fingertips! It is good for all ages and the food was amazing! I would recommend this for couples and families! The massages were amazing the yoga was incredible and the horse back riding was great! The food was kinda terrible though and it was extremely over priced.

Yelp
Unbelievably beautiful and the highest quality accommodations, food, and services. Also unbelievably priicey, and too many of the guests are right-wing Republicans. Ignore them, ignore the prices, and have a great time. Owned by Arthur M. Blank, co-founder of Home Depot. The corral staff is remarkable with first-time riders as well as with superb riders.
