The Best Destination Spas in the US & Around the World: 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards

"You might be on vacation—but there’s no reason you can’t throw some self-improvement in the mix, too. At Mountain Trek Health Reset Retreat’s British Columbia outpost, you won’t lament the week-long cheat day vacation that could’ve been. Instead, you and about 15 other hyper-stressed vacationers will embrace the granola life for a little while, with day-long hikes led by one of the eager local guides, and sunrise yoga classes led by certified professionals. Throw better sleep and possible weight loss in—au revoir, bedtime snacking—and we’ve just signed our week away. Everything here is targeted toward achieving optimal health and wellness, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be shoving kale down your throat, or scraping bark off the nearest tree to kill the hunger pangs. Quite the contrary: food is locally sourced (of course), and menus are shaped by the on-site nutritionist, who works in cahoots with the experienced head chef, who’s fluent in clean, fresh spa cuisine. A word of caution for coffee chuggers, though: beans are out, and leaves—for tea, that is—are in. Daily laundry service after a day spent hiking, stretching, and sprinting is a welcome bonus."

I just returned from an amazing week at Mountain Trek, and I am reset and rejuvenated! From arrival to departure, everyone on staff works so hard to make it an excellent experience! They all truly care about your well-being and making everyone happy. The food was healthy and delicious (you may want to bring your own hot sauce if you like heat!). The hiking was challenging as well as nurturing and fits all different levels from experienced and fast to slow and steady newbie. The yoga and recovery workouts were also great and much needed. I found it very powerful to do the forest bathing, the breathwork, somatic therapy and Reiki (all new to me). A lot of healing took place this week for me, and I will definitely be returning to stay connected to my inner self. I wasn't looking to lose weight, but I did, and most importantly, I made more muscles! I must give a special shout-out to Katya, Krista, Jennifer, the nutritionist, Jen in the office, Michelle, the somatic therapist and Allison and Joe, the great massage therapists that I had. Special thanks as well to the great cooking staff, all the hiking guides, the people who did our smelly laundry after each hike and the lovely cleaning staff. This place is magical and I hope you will find time to invest in yourself and go soon! Life-changing for everyone who was with me on the adventure - it's like adult summer camp with deep personal work and a mental and physical reset.

This Mountain Trek Retreat exceeded my expectations in every way. The hiking and setting were gorgeous. They take care of every detail, and continually check in to see how things are going. The bespoke food and meals were well delicious and nutritious. The massages were amazing and therapeutic enhancing all of the fitness stuff we were doing. The morning yoga was really just a relaxing stretch type of thing, but did manage to get you goind. The comaraderie that developed in this small group made it all fun. I would whole heartedly recommend a visit.

The location is beautiful, but that’s where the positives end. There are no locks on the doors, and despite their claims of respecting guests’ privacy, they clearly don’t — I even caught staff entering my room uninvited. When I raised a separate concern with the manager, she was dismissive and condescending, showing no real customer service skills. Their so-called ‘health education’ relies heavily on pseudoscience and diet culture. While some guests might enjoy the experience because the strict routine does lead to weight loss, the approach feels more like a health cult than a wellness retreat. They’d be far better off focusing on creating a genuine spa experience centered on fitness, good food, and relaxation.

I was asked by a very dear friend if I would ever consider attending a hiking Boot Camp with her. Hiking is not something I do on a regular basis, but I am always up for an adventure. I said yes!|Susan and I signed up for the “Timeless Trekers”, a week for those who are young at heart, but at least 65 years of age. We arrived in Spokane, Washington and we transported across the border into British Columbia. Everything about the week was magical. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the staff felt like family from the start. The days were packed with activities from yoga to hiking to afternoon classes of weight training. The lectures were extremely informative and thought-provoking. Each guests meals were prepared to their liking, avoiding any allergies or restrictions. The scenery that we were shown through the hikes were nothing short of breathtaking. And for those who don’t hike, like me, we were offered for different levels of pace. I pushed myself beyond my comfort level, I think that’s where the growth happens!||I cannot wait to return to mountain track, next year! 🥰||P.S. I met some wonderful people who became friends!

I decided to do a health retreat while my husband was fishing. I am pretty careful eater but at 67 I felt creepy in my joints and just out of good sleep/ welllness feeling. I wanted a detox and mindfulness type of retreat. Wow. Did I get this. The program is so well designed to build you up and let you release any toxins in your body( including emotional ones). The setting, hikes, education , yoga, nutrition and comraderie was exceptional. Thankyou to all the guides, staff and of course Katya who kept us on track! Loved the nutrition reset also!

What a wonderful, transformative trip! I spent a week in British Columbia earlier this summer as a way to reset and form some new habits in my life. Everyone there was lovely, the location was perfect, the hikes were amazing, and the food was incredible. I returned home more relaxed than I've felt in recent history. Thank you to everyone who made the week so memorable.

My stay at Mountain Trek exceeded my expectations. The attention to Health and Wellbeing was unbelievable. Prior to my visit, I thought I had a relatively good grasp on my current state. But this visit elevated my level of understanding. Learning more about nutrition and mindfulness added to the outstanding hikes in the beautiful surrounding nature which challenged me physically. The staff and attention provided to me was superior.

The week at Mountain Trek was special- guides and staff take great care to ensure guest safety and comfort while experiencing spectacular hiking in the Kootenays. Food was creative, always tasty and great model for clean eating. The blend of physical, educational and mindfulness activity was enlightening, and the therapists in the spa were top notch. The small group of guests sharing the experience added to the camaraderie. A phenomenal week!

Yelp
This is not really a luxury health spa or a leisurely hiking program. It is more like a mental and physical butt-kicking delivered in very nice way with nice amenities. The resort is great, beautiful spot, minutes from the hot springs, a hot tub and plunge pool, sauna, and gymn. The food is great, and even on the calorie restricted diet I really enjoyed it and found it satisfying. The staff were all lovely.......well all of them except the guides, they were all lovely with just a hint of underlying sadism. The focus is more on the actual hiking and less on theory, however; having experienced the opposite, I much prefer this model. I definitely came away feeling better than when I arrived with lots of ideas and strategies I could take home with me. If you need a physical and/or mental reset I would recommend Mountain Trek without reservation.

Yelp
Must give it 5 stars due to the bliss factor! I had recently found relief from years of chronic pain and found myself weak and lacking stamina. So, needless to say, I'm a tough customer. I wasn't sure I'd be able to keep up on the hikes, but they have 3 groups to allow for all fitness levels so it wasn't a problem. In a week they turned this skeptic into a believer. When I left there I was FLOATING! It was a great experience. Superb ultra-healthy food, amazing staff and gorgeous views. Yes, you will WORK but it seems like such a treat to be there that you forget you're working as hard as you are, (must be the picturesque mountains - so pretty!). I really surprised myself with how quickly I was able to build strength and how fast I began feeling and even looking better. The CHEK assessment, which was an extra charge, was TOTALLY worth it! My posture improved every day I was there and they were able to recommend exercises to help correct the (start of a nasty little hump back) damage done by the chronic pain. I still do them at home... which is saying a lot. I hated exercise due to the pain I was in and it took doing this to get me back on track. It was a nutritional and psychological education as well! I learned when and what to eat; how to change my inner dialogue and incorporate the best of Mountain Trek's wellness tips into everyday life. Although some recipes are included in the workbook you get, I'd love to see more. I heard they're doing a cookbook - I bet they get plenty of requests... great food! Oh and can't forget the hot springs right down the road! Overall, it was revitalizing, inspirational and a great way to kickstart a healthier lifestyle. I think it was a blessing to be able to spend a week getting back into my body again after 8 years of awful pain! I highly recommend it to all!

Yelp
One week here will reboot your life. At ANY age ... I am over 60 and after a week at Mountain Trek I feel better than i have for the past 20 years!!!! It's an organic experience with people who really know what they are doing. Hiking in the most pristine Canadian Mountains surrounded by glacier filler lakes is spectacular. You will change your life at this place. Promise!!!

Yelp
Have you ever wished that an experienced team could whisk you away and transform your body, mind and spirit? Well, that is what Mountain Trek does in a week. I just returned from a week with them at Rancho La Puerta in Mexico and it was beyond my very high expectations. I considered going to just a spa or a meditation retreat to take a break from the typical stress and unhealthy habits of daily life. However, I wanted a full reboot. That is exactly what I got - I lost a significant % of weight and body fat, gained muscle and hydration, and returned feeling healthy, energized well-rested and more mindful. As long as you can do the minimum requirements they specify before you make a reservation, don't worry if you think it might be too easy or too difficult for you - there were a wide range of abilities and backgrounds in the group so you could find your right pace in the hikes. The leaders - Kirkland, Cathy and Andrea - and the other guests were incredibly encouraging and supportive to help you maximize your experience and meet your personal goals. The food at Rancho La Puerta was fantastic! It is all portion-controlled by Mountain Trek and I thought that I would be starving with all of that exercise, but I wasn't. I was ready to eat at mealtimes, which was a great help in relearning what it meant to feel that twinge of physical hunger again. I also learned a lot about nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, willpower, habits, etc. from the daily classes. I thought that these would cover the obvious, but there was a lot of new information and I left with concrete tools and an implementation plan to take home. I can't say enough about this program. Definitely my favorite vacation ever. I would recommend to anyone who wants to get back on track.

Yelp
Mountain Trek occupies a glorious location near Ainsworth Hot Springs, outside Nelson, BC. The common areas of the lodge have stunning views overlooking Kootenay Lake, but the rooms are extremely small with no or limited views and only the most basic amenities. Luxury lodging is not the reason for staying at Mountain Trek, however--the purpose is a hiking-centered guided fitness retreat. The food is tasty as well as healthy and the guides are skilled. There were a few tiny bumps along the way but overall this program excels in common sense advice, nutritional information, and a great way to jump start whatever your next phase of fitness might be. It is suitable for anyone from wanna-reform couch potatoes to the very fit.
