The 7 Best Hostels in New Zealand (2025 Edition)

"I stayed here mainly for the people and the backyard: the staff are friendly and encourage socializing, and the huge outdoor space with a grill, sunbathing areas, and a big communal table made for many enjoyable nights. It attracts independent solo travelers (it’s not connected to the big bus tours) and has the best-stocked kitchen I found in the country, but the facilities are just OK — the kitchen is small and gets crowded, the beds are only OK and the metal frames creak, there are no lockers, and the bathrooms need a redo." - Matthew Kepnes

Mountain View Backpackers is a quiet hostel which I loved! I really enjoyed soaking up the sun in the backyard. The hostel felt homely with little touches like hand towels and bath mats (and a towel upon request, no charge). The owner has thoroughly thought about systems and processes to improve comfort of guests and ease of hostel staff, for example a dirty tea towel bucket, food buckets and fridges labelled according to room and a basket hanging from the bed. Jesse was also friendly and helpful throughout check in and my stay. I enjoyed my one night stay here, highly recommend if you are after quiet. Only downside, pillow wasn’t amazing.

Just finished a two-night stay here and I really enjoyed it! Super chill and not a party hostel, so everyone was really respectful and it was lovely to stay in and relax, especially when the weather was a bit dreary! Really cozy shared common space, they've got a cute garden, and two cats (though I only spotted one)! Kitchen space is awesome, super organised and tidy. I stayed in the 6-bed shared dorm, and it was very comfortable, if a little on the cozy side. Service was awesome, really smooth check in and the staff are super friendly. May was awesome with activities and hike advice, and I've climbed one of my favourite hikes now. Will gladly come back to stay here again!

We stayed at this hostel for three nights. Two of us in the private room and two in the dorm room. The private room had a really comfy bed, towels provided and a fan! It's definitely not a party hostel and everyone was really respectful with going to bed at a good time. Good outdoor space where you could mix with others or take some time for yourself. The communal rooms were cleaned everyday and to a good standard. You got your own fridge and cupboard space based on your room, which was good. Kitchen facilities were decent as well. The reason for the three stars was the bunk beds were quite close together so the dorm rooms felt quite cramped. There was also no privacy curtain around the beds. The water for the shower in the first night unfortunately was luke warm/cold. The other nights it was a bit temperamental but mostly warm. It would be good to have more showers as well. The location was really good though and there is a small car park outside the building bur then plenty of room on the street.

For shared 6 bed, a little packed. Was alright for a night. The service was amazing, I went on a hike in the middle of the night, so I hadn’t had a chance to have breakfast. I came back after checkout time & eventually stayed for breakfast.

Loved it here! The staff were exceptionally kind and helpful. Blair at reception went out of her way to make us feel welcomed and help us figuring out our plans. The vibe of the hostel was so chill and laid back. The location was also so nice being in the heart of town.

I think this is my favorite hostel I’ve stayed in so far in NZ! On the smaller side and super social which I loved, plus it’s in a quiet location five minutes from downtown and close to a lot of eateries. The beds were comfy and everything was super clean. Would definitely stay here again!

Overall, a great place! Awesome vibes with great people, both guests and staff. I was given a special price, and they were also flexible with me when modifying my stay, which I highly appreciate and am thankful for. Loved the cat as well! The only downside I could mention is that they didn't want me to stay around after my check-out time, even though I had taken out all my belongings and returned the bed linens, and I was clearly not disturbing anyone. I understand the rules and that they might need to set boundaries to prevent people from taking advantage of the facilities. However, in my case, I just needed to stay a bit longer for personal reasons (not leisure), and I’ve been in other places where at least they told me, "you can use the kitchen until X time."

I have stayed twice, once I'm winter and once in summer. It is expensive compared to other hostels I've stayed in NZ, however Wanaka as a town is expensive so this hostel is the cheapest in the area! The facilities are good. The kitchen can feel very small, especially at peak meal times - same with the bathrooms. The beds are comfortable, however don't have a light or much privacy which would be nice in a mixed dorm. The staff are lovely though and full of knowledge about the local area. The hostels location is great and I've never had a problem finding somewhere close by to park. In terms of security, the gate to use after reception hours is quite flimsy and during the day anyone can walk in past reception because it's not always manned. But the rooms do all have lockers for valuables (as long as you have your own lock). Overall it's a nice hostel!
