Moxy Halifax Downtown (Halifax, Nova Scotia) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Moxy’s first Canadian outpost skips the lobby formalities: check-in happens at the bar, and your first cocktail is on the house. Upstairs, rooms are bold and efficient: walk-in showers, open closets, streaming-equipped TVs, while downstairs, the action orbits around Bar Moxy, a lounge-library hybrid that doubles as workspace, games room, and late-night social hub. There’s a DJ on weekends, small plates for sharing, and 24/7 grab-and-go for when everything else is closed. Minutes from the waterfront, nightlife, and convention center, it’s a hotel that doesn’t try to please everyone, just the ones who’ll get it." - Tablet Hotels

This hotel is NOT for everyone, as you can read in the other reviews. If you're looking for a fancy room with tons of furniture then it's not for you. Our room was very simple and clean. The bed was comfortable, bathroom had lots of room. The tiny retro fridge was great for our leftover pizza for our breakfast the next day. It's everything you need in a hotel room, it is not a suite. We liked the little supplies cubby on the floor, we were able to grab an extra pillow and a towel when we needed it. We stayed here on vacation, so we were not in the room for more than sleeping and showering. The lobby/bar/reception is funky and a cool place to hang out. It was bit cool to sit outside when we were there, but they had a couple nice patio areas to hang out. I liked the gym, had plenty of cardio and free weights and a cable machine, made it easy to get in a workout while I was there. The staff is great! The food was just okay, you're better off venturing out for a meal. I took away a star for location, because it is at the top of a hill so if you're heading down to the waterfront, then you're going to have to climb back up that hill! We did take a walk north of the hotel, don't advise that area.

First impression? It’s different. (I'm in my 40's though) I walked into the lobby and genuinely wasn’t sure if I was checking in or ordering a cocktail. The vibe is modern, edgy, and definitely not your standard hotel setup.||I had parked out front because I wasn’t sure where the actual parking was, but the gentleman at the desk kindly directed me to the garage and told me to come back to check in once I was parked. His directions were spot on—but heads up: the parking garage is not pickup-friendly. You can park, but it’s a tight squeeze and honestly kind of sketchy. I panicked trying to back into a spot, traffic started backing up behind me, and it was turning into a 10-point turn situation. I bailed and kept circling. Poor signage led me into a “Trinity Parking Only” zone, which I only realized after walking back up with my luggage and seeing a sign that said “Moxy guests, don’t go beyond this point.” Not exactly easy to reverse out of once you’re in.||Eventually, I got re-parked and checked in. The room? At first glance, it felt a bit tight for a one-bedroom. But once I settled in, I realized it’s probably the most functional hotel room I’ve ever stayed in as a solo guest. Everything is designed with intention—even if it looks quirky at first.|Perks & Pros:|• Lantern for nighttime bathroom trips (no blinding lights!)|• Side table doubles as a mini fridge—perfect height for gadgets and drinks|• Light switch by the bed that softly lights the path to the bathroom|• Shower controls are placed smartly so you don’t get soaked waiting for hot water|• Supply closet on the floor for extra towels—no need to call down|• Room service was fast and food genuinely delicious|• Continental coffee was excellent, and they even offered a welcome drink on check-in|• Lobby has a great social vibe—perfect for grabbing a drink or meeting fellow travelers|• Location is ideal for downtown events and nightlife|Cons:|• Room could use a bit more space and a proper desk setup for working (but the existing setup is very workable)|• Parking with a larger vehicle is stressful and signage could be improved||Overall, I’d absolutely stay here again. It’s not your typical business hotel, but it’s perfect for younger travelers or solo guests who want something stylish, functional, and close to the action. If you’re in town for a few days and want a hotel with personality, this one’s worth checking out.

I enjoy a vibrant hotel atmosphere as much as anyone, but as a travel advisor I’m not sure I would fully recommend this property. The staff were absolutely outstanding. They are friendly, attentive, and genuinely helpful and I really appreciated the overall vibe the hotel offers. I came in with the understanding that this would be a no-frills stay, which was fine. However, the biggest issue for me was the noise. I was staying for a combination of business and leisure (2 nights), but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get much sleep. My room was directly above the lobby, and I could clearly hear jazz music the first night and a DJ the following evening. I attempted to change rooms, but the hotel was fully booked. While I respect that some noise is to be expected in a lively hotel and that music is posted to be scheduled until 10 p.m., the volume continued past 11:30 p.m., which made it difficult to wind down. A few other points to note: - there is no housekeeping service - you will be provided a drink token to use during your stay at the bar I am disappointed as my family has recently moved to Halifax and I needed a place to settle pre & post visit before my flights and I was hoping this was going to be a good fit for me.

So happy to see a Moxy outside of Europe! It is such a fun hotel / upscale European hostel vibe but still have privacy and convenience of a hotel. Love the extra self serve bedding closet in hallway and the water stations plus the games in lobby. Not to mention gym and lockers to leave luggage and explore after check out. Such a fun place to have a family or group stay!!! You have to experience it but highly recommend for fun gathering! I especially love the local Tide gin and tonic served as a free drink. Plus the appetizer menu is so well priced! Had the fish and fries and probably the best fish and fries in years - for 8$!!! Shout out to Rochelle who was fantastic server. Seriously visitors to Halifax - stay here.

A unique hotel that one has to experience. The design in the room was simple, modern and functioning. I only had one slightly negative thought and that was to put 2 chairs in the room, not one. It could have just been our room. It was clean, and everything we needed was at this hotel.|I was very impressed with when you walk in, you are met by someone at the bar, given a couple of bar tokens, and enjoyed great service from the staff. |We had to wait for our room, we were 3 hours before check in, we utilized the cool luggage locker while we explored downtown Halifax. |We enjoyed happy hour on the patio and a glass of wine at the end of our day.|The games in the lobby is such a cool idea.|The location is close enough to Argyle St, and the Citadel, and very close to the harbour. |Will stay here again.

Google
Great location and have always had good service. The rooms are just so basic that they feel like they lack the necessities. I think they focus too much on being trendy that they ignore the basics like having counterspace or a desk to put items on or having two nightstands (or even one that has enough space for a couple of items). The beds aren't very comfy and more pillows are needed (staff have always been wonderful at bringing more when requested).

So the location is great. It's got a pretty hip Vibe if you're into that kind of thing. I found a lobby loud to myself. And I was incredibly disappointed when I first got into the room. It was really small and there was hardly any furniture or space even to put your things. Also there was no coffee machine which was surprising. I didn't book the room my boyfriend did period and as a guy he doesn't read listings LOL anyway I realized that this was one of the least expensive rooms that they have but it still cost a lot of money for two nights stay in a room that frankly I felt was only slightly better than camping. I think they were paying too much attention to trying to be cool and Chic and fun, and maybe taking the mick a little bit with the size of the room the comfort and amenities of the room it was a little bit too far away from what you would expect paying that kind of money in downtown Halifax. I will say that I guess we made the best of it and we got used to it. But I really think that we shouldn't be paying the amount we were paying for such a small room that was actually kind of uncomfortable because of its lack of space and furniture. There was literally nowhere to put anything except on the floor

Google
Mixed feelings about this hotel. It’s modern and clean and has a very fun lobby and bar area. For the amount you’re paying though the rooms are dollhouse sized. We knew about this going in, so that was expected, but some things were just really poorly designed. For example, there’s no closet or real place to put/open up luggage if you also want space to move through the room. The TV was massive but put up on the wall immediately below a whole line of hooks, which means you only have actual use of 3 or 4 hooks out of maybe 10 or so because otherwise you risk scratching/damaging the TV screen. Do people REALLY need such a large screen? Considering the lack of storage space and space just in general, a smaller screen would at least give you a few more spots to hang up clothing, coats, etc. Then there’s the HVAC which was right next to the bed, which due to the tiny size of the room is basically right in your face. It was so loud that it was hard to sleep unless you turn it off entirely, which in a hot or cold day/night is impossible. And the constant on/off to keep at your chosen temp in the thermostat constantly disrupts your sleep. As for the bar downstairs… staff were friendly but seemingly certain people are completely inept and require more training. We requested 2 teas and given an option of different types. We asked for peppermint. We realized several gulps in that we were given regular black tea which we were trying to avoid because of the caffeine at that late hour. Then we got the bill and realized we had been charged for the 2 teas AND 2 cocktails we had never ordered. Although staff fixed it and gave us the teas on the house, but really… how do you mess up an order of tea? It just seemed a bit ridiculous. Overall I would stay again but definitely not longer than 2 nights. The lack of space in the rooms and the noise of the hvac just made it too uncomfortable and the savings vs other hotels was negligible.

Yelp
I stayed here for a week for work; here were some observations: The cons: 1. All my colleagues on lower floors were experiencing distressful noise issues throughout the stay. Apparently, the walls were paper-thin for them, and they could hear everything outside of the hotel and/or in the room next door 2. The water pressure in my room was very weak, and my shower experience wasn't optimal as a result 3. Apparently, the housekeeping was not automatically set for every day, and I had to manually make sure that it happens every day with the front desk 4. I did NOT like the design that there was no closet available in the rooms, but hangers on the wall 5. I got that this hotel was set to be the "young and hip" hostel-like experience - but no, it is still a hotel by Marriott, and the guests still pay the full price for it. The residential experience should match the price. 6. The floor in the room was perpetually dusty for some reason; I had to ask the front desk for a pair of slippers so I wouldn't have to constantly wash my feet after walking around in bare feet. The pros: 1. The front desk was extremely helpful overall, especially Heather. E.g., the plugs in my room had the old USB B connection (which I don't think people use anymore...), but she managed to get me a USB B to USB C cable. It was amazing, and the top reason I still want to give this hotel a 4 stars review. 2. the design of the room was overall very clean and comfortable. Although my colleagues had lots of issues with their rooms (too cold/ac blowing to their head while sleeping etc), i never had these issues. 3. the complimentary coffee in the morning was very fresh and consistently good over the five days of staying at Moxy. 4. I've heard good things about the food - something i should've tried. Next time!

Yelp
TLDR; Water pressure is good, but that's pretty much the only good thing. Rude and aggressive bartender just flat out ruined our night and the stay. We'll definitely be submitting this incident/feedback to Marriott. First off, the room; the room had this weird bleach/cleaning agent smell to it when we came in. 6 hours after we came in, opened the window and had AC on as full as we could, and the smell is still there. And they just seem to have the AC on an extreme power saver mode or something because even though we set the AC to 65 (because of the next point), the temperature refuses to go below 68. We like to sleep a bit cool, and it's laughable that thermostat itself reads 67~68 and AC doesn't run, even while having the temps set to 65. The water pressure is great though. It's better than even some Westin hotels we've been to. Now, for the main reason why all the stars are gone: My wife and I went down to grab a drink to bring up to the room. I was carrying our dog, as we had just taken him out to relieve himself before turning in for the night. When my wife approached the bar to ask about the menu, while I stood a good distance away while holding our dog in my arms. When my wife started asking, a bartender freaked out all of a sudden and immediately and loudly stated in a hostile manner that there cannot be a dog at the bar. It was communicated in such an abrupt and aggressive manner that we have never experienced before that we were taken aback. There were no signs around as to how close to the bar we could have our dog or what areas are considered food/drinks vs living area. It was not like we were trying to sit at the bar area to have a drink while having our dog, we were merely trying to see the menu and figure out how to order, WHILE I STOOD A GOOD DISTANCE AWAY. As longtime dog owners and having traveled with our dog for years, we understand very well that there are health codes and regulations that prevent a dog from being near food area. But I was standing a good 5 feet away, and there were no indications that certain areas were food areas, as the common space of where (I can only still guess to be) food area and the living area blend in. In addition to the lack of clear delineations, the aggressive and hostile attitude that the bartender had was extremely disappointing. We have been to many Moxy locations and Marriott brand hotels, as apparent in the membership status, and I am shocked to find a worker being allowed to communicate in such a manner. It is safe to say that we do not feel welcome and feel that this particular location does NOT exhibit the welcoming and friendly attitude we've encountered in all other employees at all other Moxy and Mariott locations. Next time we are in Halifax, or any location with Moxy that we haven't been to, it's safe to say that we'll be staying at other Mariott locations, or even Homewood Suites across the street. That being said, the drinks were good though. Low ball is really great.

Yelp
This is a nightmare of a place to stay. The AC sounds like a loud washing machine and yet doesn't seem to cool the room. The front desk staff agree that it is loud... so nothing.

Yelp
We stayed at the Moxy hotel for four nights and it was great! Very modern, our room layout was extremely space efficient and comfy but not as suited to "hanging out". that was fine with us as we were out and about all day exploring anyway. They do have a nice lobby & bar patio area where you could lounge and chat more comfortably. The decor was a lot of fun, and the lobby also functions as a bar and restaurant. The staff are all extremely helpful and nice. I deducted one star due to the fact that we could hear our neighbors. Given this was a hip hotel, we had young folk in the rooms next to us, who were up late chatting, when us "oldies" wanted to be asleep. I also found the sink layout to be a little bit awkward for washing your face. I'd bump into the rack above the sink and splash all over, but that's no big deal. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to people traveling to the area

Yelp
For the sensual beings - come feel exhilarated and satisfied. The ambience is fresh, unique and inviting. Sitting down for a drink, one cannot help to notice a great collection of liquor displayed in the warm backdrop of amber light. The warm-hearted Crew fit right in with the hotel's welcoming spirit. And if you are hungry, be prepared to leave satisfied. I ordered Spicy Gambas. The food deserves a solid 10: the naan is thin, just soft enough, with just the right amount of garlic and a subtle sweetness. And the shrimp... firm, yet soft, the perfect bite size, is enveloped in the chili and garlic oil, yet tastes like the sea, is light, yet filling. The only negative aspect of these Gambas is that they could not last longer than they did. Kudos to the team for adding this dish on their menu and to the chef and his team for creating such a great dish. I am hooked!
