Mr. Baldy's Family Restaurant

Went for the Chicken and Dumplings. They had sold out earlier in the day. Waitress gave us the option to leave but we decided to stay. The tables are very cute with personal messages. I asked what the waitress would recommend. She suggested the hot roast beef sandwich. 🥪 OMG! I’ve never seen anything like it. Maybe it’s a regional thing? Two slices of bread with a steak um. Mashed potatoes were powdered along with the gravy. It took everything out of me to eat it…. On a good note the waitress was very good and the side salad was good!

Food is always good for a good price. Been coming here for a long time on family vacations. I will say I really miss the old look. It used to be very colorful and fun inside. Used to have a large mural painted on the wall. Now everything is gray and bland inside. Food is still great Just miss the colorful unique atmosphere that made the restaurant come to life.

Mister Baldy’s (We’re not going back!) My wife and I have vacationed on Chincoteague every September for quite a few years, and we have never tried Mister Baldy’s. We decided to give it a try this time and I can say without hesitation that our first time will most definitely be the last time!w The deal breaker for me was the soft shell crab sandwich. Talk about boring and plain… The sandwich was a single, sad looking soft crab sandwiched between two halves of a bun. NO lettuce, onion, tomato, pickle, tarter sauce. NOTHING but one crab between two pieces of bread. I should mention that the cook managed to use a fairly large toothpick to hold the whole thing together, but believe me, no toothpick was required. A three year old’s hands are big enough to hold this piece of work together! The sandwich came with potato chips. NO fries, no hush puppies, just plain chips. The cost for this? $14.00! Do yourself a favor and go someplace else if you want a good soft crab sandwich. There’s another restaurant on the island that offers a much better sandwich at a price that is worth paying for what you get. TWO soft shell crabs, lettuce, tomato, pickle, tarter sauce, Old Bay Chips and Hush Puppies. My wife had a garden salad with her meal. The salad consisted of lettuce, cherry tomatoes and onion slices. No croutons, no cheese, no cucumbers. No imagination or creativity here, unless you consider the inedible piece of lettuce core that was served with the salad. Looks like a lack of quality control in the kitchen or just a lack of concern for what is served to the customer. Mister Baldy’s. For us, it’s one and done!

Enjoyed our meal here. Server lady was nice. Ordered the crab cake sandwich and it was really good. I liked their fries. Got the crab soup which was also really good. My toddler loved it. Not too salty. It says it’s a family restaurant but they don’t have changing tables in the restroom…. The restroom was clean at least.

What a peaceful place to eat and the staff is friendly, BUT the food is GREAT. Mrs Nida was our server and she is GREAT

Sever was great. Food was good, but prices were too high for the quality level of the food. Not a cheap breakfast for the 5 of us. I guess maybe island pricing, but where it is located is not near the vacationers, so who knows. The seating near the windows could use a good cleaning; the table end, windows, window sills, etc. Someone I was with found it impossible to eat because of this and started cleaning said area. (Which then made it tough for me to eat).

We had a great lunch at Mr Baldy’s while on vacation in Chincoteague this past week. The crab soup was excellent! The sandwiches were really good and the cheese sticks were tasty as well. If you’re looking for a good meal, stop in there. We’ll definitely go back!

Great service, very friendly and attentive. Food was all from the freezer or instant prep. It was hot, kids liked it.

Just amazing! We just had dinner here, and oh my it was a great experience. The food is wonderful, my husband had the best spaghetti and meatballs I've ever eaten ( yes I made him share, it was that good) and the portion was huge. I had the Greek salad with chicken which was also huge but was crisp with just the right amount of cheese and balsamic on it. And of course, a delicious piece of grilled chicken too Our server, Anna, was friendly and attentive. It's a cute restaurant in a very residential neighborhood. Definitely worth the drive. There were plenty of other diners, but it was quiet inside. I consider this a find!

I do not recommend Mr. Baldy's for breakfast. A kids milk was 3.99. The meal for 3 was $60 with tip. The food came out cold. Absolutely no flavor to the cold sausage and gravy. Scrambled eggs were shredded and wet. And we had two giant flies buzzing around. Take my advice and PASS on this one! (Our server was sweet, kind and prompt).

Came here for breakfast. Food was very average, felt like we could have made better food at the house. The potatoes seemed like they were from a frozen bag. Divey atmosphere (which I didn't mind). The sweet tea was way overly sweet, my father in law couldn't drink it. I think the only good thing was the sausage links. The service was friendly. Overall, I wouldn't go back.

We stopped by Mr.Baldy's for breakfast today. Love the atmosphere. The service was fast, friendly servers. We are very satisfied with the portion, quality and taste of our breakfast. The price is reasonable. Highly recommended

Came in with a party of 8 about an hour from close and they handled us perfectly everyone had a fantastic meal. Huge portions for a good price and super respectful staff, we were all separate and they handled it so well. We got a few chicken parms, a few chicken parm subs, a sloppy joe(?), shrimp fettuccini Alfredo and a philly cheesesteak. The restaurant was clean and had a cool gimmick where you could write notes and leave them under the glass of the table. It was a little small so I'd probably avoid it when it's packed and we definitely saw it packed in the morning but it's a great place to stop by! Definitely would recommend for dinner on Chincoteague

A large menu with something for every mood and decently priced. I ordered the crab cake sandwich and was disappointed with the amount of filler. It really had little crab flavor. I wouldn't recommend this place for great seafood dishes, but it worked out for our picky party of seven where we all found something on the menu and was able to sit in the air conditioning on a hot day and not break the bank

Family of 6. We were greeted immediately. Everyone was friendly. Fantastic service! Food was excellent! We will definitely be back. Thank you all so much!

You get what you pay for. Pretty inexpensive, lower quality breakfast food, but it was "fine". You don't get sides either with an entree; so if you order pancakes or an omelet that's what you get, so plan ahead. Food came a bit quicker than anticipated, and server was right on top of the coffee situation (which was appreciated). Ambience was a bit gloomy and loud with the shades down - picture grade school cafeteria. AC was nice though.

Six of us went in, food was great, had very nice waitress, friendly and fun. Had pie and it was good. Definitely go back. Just a small restaurant away from everything.

If i could give 1/4 star i would. We were looking for dinner and called to see if they served fried chicken. The lady that answered the phone was rude and very short discouraging us from coming there saying they were closing in 40 min and before i could say we are 3 mins away she hung up on me in mid sentence. I will never go here!

We were in the mood for Diner food and have had disappointing experiences at another diner on the island so we decided to give Mr Baldy's a try and we are so glad we did! The service was amazing from the time we walked in the door! The restaurant is clean and very neatly decorated and the lady who seated us asked if we wanted a table or booth before we could say we preferred a table. So nice! The best sweet tea around and the food was incredible! We both had the Hamburger Steak, seasoned well and checked all the boxes for comfort food. Sadly we didn't leave room for dessert but we did find out they have breakfast and will be back for that tomorrow before we have to leave on Monday! We will definitely make this restaurant a regular stop when we are on the island. Our server, Tomi from Kazakhstan was a delight and added so much to the wonderful experience. There are little notes under the table glass from previous customers and we added ours to the collection. Don't miss out!

Good family restaurant! Decent sized portions and prices are more affordable than other places on island. Friendly staff.

I was there on a Thursday morning around 9:30ish . Was greeted as soon as we entered . Was sat down immediately that's when all the dissatisfaction began. Waited over 20 min to even get my drink or even acknowledge I was there . Then waited another 15-20 min to take my order . People who came in after me were eating before I even had my drink . All the servers saw me I was sitting in the section by their computer. I have never had this problem before and it might take me some time to even consider going back

I came her for breakfast with my cousins and I got to say I really liked this place. Food was good, cheep and the service was great. The restaurant itself was very warm and welcoming and located in a beautiful town off the bay.

I wanted there to be a redeeming quality about this place; maybe the scrapple? Friends in our party of 6 recommended Baldy's, so I'm guessing we came on an off day. We saw our server 3 times the entire time: she took our order, dropped off our food, and gave us our bill. We sat for an hour and a half. None of us expect the "sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwich" would be two eggs between white bread. Everything tasted like it had been sitting out, cold and tough. Thanks for the scrapple though. Enjoyed it

We were here 6/5 2023, 4:00pm. Service was good, portions were very large. Food was delicious. Building could use some updating but food and service did not reflect that.

We made the mistake of choosing this restaurant for lunch based on the reviews. The food was awful! There were dead flies in the windowsill. The bathroom was beat. The service, however, was good.

We were tired after long drive, weather gloomy, to top it off we ordered soft shell crab and fries...the soggy leftover at end of day made us feel worse. We will not go back.

Back again and this place does not disappoint. Food is delicious, service is friendly. We had chicken Parmesan and the grilled chicken parm sandwich. Both were delicious. Can't wait to go back. So many food options and prices very reasonable.

We really enjoyed the food. I ordered the Flounder and it was a big portion. Our waitress Kristy was very nice. The prices are very reasonable. We will definitely be back.

Service is nothing to write home about. Fried food was clearly cooked in the same fryer as the seafood, so everything had a vaguely fishy taste and smell to it. Food is relatively cheap (for the island), but isn't somewhere I'd go even outside of a vacation.

Weekday mid-morning breakfast. Fast service, good old fashioned decor. Very good food, good prices. It appears locals also frequent this place which is usually a good thing. Good menu selection. Food hot and prepared well. No complaints. Will definitely return.

Service is great. But that is the only good thing about this place. Food is as blant and tasteless as it can get. As my husband put it-straight from the Crisco warehouse to the table. We ordered three different dishes-they all tasted the same :-(.

At first I hesitated to write a review, this being a small local family restaurant. So two stars is as low as I go. They are only open for breakfast now, presumably having trouble obtaining staff, though I really don't know why. However you the potential customer should have a sense as to what you're going to experience. My sister and I went in for breakfast the other day and did not leave feeling pleased. In the first instance the waitress took our order than apparently forgot what it was, came back 10 minutes later and had to take it again. One of us ordered scrambled eggs with corned beef hash and English muffin. The waitress was specifically told that the eggs should be prepared "gentle". They came back the opposite way, well done and hard. The English muffin was barely cooked and floppy. My omelet was not very impressive, and the home fries were chunks of barely prepared potatoes. If breakfast is going to be the only meal you serve, it should not be inferior to just about any other breakfast place or diner ever tried.

Excellent breakfasts with friendly service. We enjoyed our scrambled eggs with cheese and biscuits. It's worth the visit!

Pros: My husband liked his bacon and cheese omelette. Cons: The home fries were cold and soggy, all of the veggies in my omelette fell out because they weren't cooked into the eggs, the toast came without butter on it and the butter packets were too cold to spread, our waitress was very inattentive and never came back to check on us or refill our drinks, we waited almost 15 minutes after we finished eating to get our check. Overall: The restaurant is small so get there early or there will be a wait. There are not many breakfast places on the island so if I want breakfast I'll go here, but my expectations are very low based on past visits. I would not recommend this restaurant.

7/17/21, With friends had the opportunity ( again ) to eat breakfast here. The service was great. This a country restaurant w/ the regulars ( that come daily ) and the tourists that float ALL THROUGHOUT CHINCOTEAGUE during the summertime, it's small but accommodating to the people. Server service ( B Miller, Billy Ray and Andréa ) was extremely Awesome. The food was/is great!

Upsetting to see anyone leave less than five stars for this place, it's a small restaurant with cheap prices and great food. What more do you want for an island filled with locals and people who've grown up coming here for years and years? There's a reason there's always a line! Also check out the tables in there (:

*Only open until noon right now, breakfast only! We ran over for a quick brunch this morning, and Baldy's was exactly what we had hoped for: great diner breakfast, crispy home fries, real butter on the toast. Server and hostess were both really sweet too. Might go back tomorrow.

Friendly atmosphere. Good food and service. The fish and chips and clam strip basket were hot. Food was served quickly.

The place is alright. The food I got tasted fine. There was some things in the diner that made it stand out. I had to use the restroom, and was surprised at how clean it was. However my friend wasn't happy about the flies in the restaurant. The waiter also took a long time when we had to pay.

Ok breakfast place. The omelets were greasy. The potatoes and pancakes were good. Coffee also good. Be sure to go early- it was filled by the time we left.

Best place for breakfast on the island. Clean, fast, friendly. We always come here for breakfast when we stay.

This place was recommended by Ms Nida who touted it as the best breakfast place on the island! Of course we had to try it before heading home. The pancakes were fantastic, bacon cooked perfectly crispy, and chipped beef gravy was yummy! I'd definitely say give it a try! The staff was very friendly. We got there around 8:15 AM and the place was not crowded at all.

Probably the worst breakfast I have had in a long time. The best thing I can say about them is the fun notes from visitors under the glass.

Little hole in the wall, out of the way type of place. The food was EXCELLENT! Huge portions. We will return the next time we're in town!

Stopped in here, despite the poor reviews, and luckily we walked out before being subjected to what the 10 -12 other customers were already experiencing. Cold food, orders screwed up, half the table didn't get their food and those that did were not happy. After waiting 15 minutes to order and observing the craziness, we left. There are many other places to eat at that are far better. Keep driving!

My family and I enjoy eating breakfast at Mr. Baldy's when we visit the area. The staff is always so friendly and give the restaurant a wonderful vibe.

We decided to go to Baldy's since there aren't a lot of breakfast places on the Island. Let's just say we will no return on our next visit. There were dead flies on the window above our table and on our table itself. The food was decent but the worst was the service. The waitress appeared to be on something. She forgot several of our drinks and brought out wrong drinks to our table. I asked for ham with my eggs but my ham never arrived and the waitress said "i figured you didn't want it".

THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN I'VE EVER HAD! Party of 5 adults ~ dinner. Our waitress was super nice and attentive. I'm really just writing this review for people who love fried chicken. Crispy, salty, juicy, hot and delicious. It's worth waiting the 20 minutes. Go get some right now! If I didn't live 4 hours away, I'd be getting it at least once per week.

The staff is always friendly and there's always plenty of space. Food always tastes pretty good and the value is good. Most of the food is out of a can or equivalent but still good. My only complaint is I've been coming here for 4 years every year on vacation and there has been a fly circling our table every time.

The good: waitress, not busy OK: the food Stopped in for dinner around 7pm. Surprisingly for a tourist area restaurant, there only 3 other family there. Maybe because it's out of the way from the main strip? Waitress was great who checked up on us throughout the meal. Being a diner, diner food is what you'll get. Not a tantalizing tasty experience, but a meal that will satisfy your hunger needs. At least it has everything on the menu to satisfy all types. That is why we went, for our non seafood companion. Wife got the chicken fried steak what lacked flavor in the crust but was ample sized. I got the liver and onions that was tasty but the livers were thin. My daughter got the Alfredo with shrimp. I don't think they used local shrimp as they were small and tasted something from frozen. Seafoodies know when he seafood is local. The Alfredo sauce was pretty bland. Son got the fish and chips and fish looked like they weren't fresh either. But once again, it is diner food and that is what I expected. If you want real seafood, I'd go to a seafood establishment, but if you're ok with filing the stomach, this place would suffice.

Meh. The food is frozen, not fresh. The soup is so thick it is like condensed soup that hasn't been thinned. The staff is friendly and accommodating, but the food is underwhelming. The soup is not good at all. We thought it was going to be a local dive that would be great, but it is just a dive.

Mr Baldy's was open as of today, April 11, 2017, with normal hours. A previous review marked it as closed, however, it's open!!! An old school diner with a local feeling, Mr Baldy's is a stop we always make on a trip to Chincoteague. Our favorite is the side room with murals of fish and the yellow submarine! We love it!

We ate breakfast our first morning in Chincoteague. The service was a bit brusque. They are only open for breakfast at this time. The food was diner food which means it is edible, but nothing fancy. Prices were good.

This place is great! Who doesn't love a laid-back atmosphere with friendly wait staff. The food is great and the price is right. Get yourself there!

This place was not good and I would not recommend it. The food was sub-par for everyone across our 5 person group, and my burger was very dry and the bun tasted like nothing.

After reading about some of the reviews on another venue I thought this may be a hit or miss. Well let me tell you it got five stars from me in everything I expect in a breakfast spot. The place is spotless, the people act like they've known you all your life, the service was great and the food was excellent! Great cup of never ending coffee, eggs done perfectly, and pancakes as good ( almost) as my wife's! And that is saying something. And inexpensive to boot. Should be a favorite.

I was put off by this place because we went in and there was only one other table around 12:45 PM and the tables have glass on top of the table cloths which I find to be very tacky. And I kept hearing celebrity chefs saying restaurants are slow for a reason in my head. But the voices were wrong. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. I got the turkey ranch and bacon sub which was delicious. I just which it came with something besides chips. Everybody else in our party of six loved their food, including my sister in law who is picky as hell. This is a true hidden Gem on a back road.
