On the Grid : Mr Kitly

"It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but up the stairs to the first floor Mr Kitly, you’ll find a fantastic collection of objects curated by the talented Bree Claffey. Ceramics, textiles, jewellery, plants and heaps of other stuff from Melbourne and around the world is for sale in store. Mr Kitly regularly puts on exhibitions of work by Australian and international artists and designers as well. Definitely worth a look." - Smith & Thomas

Great communication via phone and email -- including patiently answering questions. Lovely purchases arrived quickly to rural NSW via Australia Post. This business seems to value and support seeking to live ethically.

Superb stock of both Japanese and Japanese styled products, but a weird vibe from the salesperson. Apparently my appreciation and purchase were a source of annoyance. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ordered items online yesterday (Monday) and chose Express Shipping. Emailed them today to ask when they would be dispatched as I need these by the weekend. Was told items won't be dispatched until their next send out, which is Thursday. I mentioned the time frames for items to be dispatched on their website are therefore misleading, all I got was a disinterested 'thanks for the feedback' with no offer of sending the items out earlier/refund of the extra I paid for Express Shipping. In contrast I recently bought online from Skittle Lane who have gone above and beyond to make sure the items I bought will be received on time.

Google
Number 1 for hand crafted pottery and general items of fancy and interest. Many pieces are pricey (and some of the pottery definitely on the 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' side of things), but this is a great place to find a gift for the discerning, design concious friend or family member.

Yelp
As I reached the top of the stairs that lead you to Mr Kitly, I couldn't help but break out in a huge smile. This place is cool. At the top of the stairs is a smart display of books that range from manga to healthy eating. The room directly to the right has a huge low display of indoor plants that seem to be quite exotic with a range of pretty flowers and odd shaped leaves. The next room through in this cubbyhole of a store is full of designer artefacts and knick-knacks from around the world. There are Norwegian chopping boards and Japanese teapots - actually there are a lot of Japanese items, there seems to be a bit of a theme. I asked the guy behind the desk if this place is new and he informed me that it had been serving the public since last year. I had just walked past without ever noticing. It is hard to see! A cool little pocket of the world, one where I will be heading back to next pay day!

Yelp
Down Sydney Rd one comes across a narrow flight of stairs beside a fabric shop that is rarely open. One could be forgiven for not ascending said stairs and moving on, but if so you would miss out the magic that Mr Kitly. Part crafty boutique shop of marvelous wares, part gallery and exhibition space, the quiet subdued nature of the place seems to makes the pieces stand out even more than they on may already. Indoor plants a plenty take space on stairs and room, with the shop area filled with crafty goods you expect from Brunswick's DIY craft culture elite - the pottery and jewelry kind. You pay for it, but you know it's good. And you may get a glimpse out the window to Sydney Rd, something that is surprisingly hard to come by.
