I'd been meaning to get to Mr Miyagi for awhile now, and a recommendation from a friend at work prompted me to head down there for dinner this Friday. I arrived just as they were opening the door at 5.30 thinking if I got there early enough I wouldn't have to book a table. Wrong. Fully booked sorry, but they could still squeeze me in at the bar, which was fine for me.
It was a cold and wet - perfect weather for a big flask of warm Edoichi sake! Unfortunately at $34 not great value.
My work friend had recommended the Battered Corn so I started with a small serve of that. This arrived very quickly and consisted of four round fritters served on a black rectangular dish sprinkled with popcorn and some dollops of spicy corn puree. Not bad - nicely presented, but a little bland for my taste.
Next up was MFC - Miyagi Fried Chicken. Served in a KFC style cardboard take away pack, this reminded me of the chicken ribs you get in Chinese restaurants, but a little saltier and not quite as succulent. To be honest, KFC is better.
The last course was quail which was probably the pick of the bunch. It's easy to overcook this little bird, but the meat was really moist and sweet. Pity about the sauce, which was quite heavy handed. It was served on a bed of potato salad - which tasted like it came straight from the deli section of Coles - and a couple of soft boiled quail eggs, which added nothing to the dish.
Unlike some of the other reviews I've read about Mr Miyagi, I thought the service was great (my waitress was definitely a keeper) but the food isn't. However, maybe that's just me as by the time I left at 6.30, just about every seat in the house was full. Personally, I gave it 2 stars, but only because of the service. If I was just rating it on the food and value for money I'd give it a 1. Overpriced and mediocre.
