On the Grid : Mr Wilkinson Bar

"Mr Wilkinson on Brunswick East’s Lygon Street is very smooth. Take your pick of spaces to relax in: long front bar, light and leafy courtyard or large lounge area with a second bar and comfortable booths. The interior is tastefully decked out by the owners Jack Letch, Gordon Johnson and Katherine Wrigglesworth for whom the bar is clearly a passion. They have also put together a menu of quality fang to keep you well fed and jolly all night.A great place for catching up with old and new friends. If you head to Mr Wilkinson, leave plenty of time, because once you sit down, you won’t want to leave." - Smith & Thomas

Delightful! Wonderful friendly and cheeky staff with prompt and helpful service. Food was delicious! The atmosphere and mood was very special; different rooms and various seating options all felt spacious yet cosy with my favourite being the outdoor daylight/dusk ally of exposed brick and hightop tables. Couches inside look tempting too. Comprehensive drinks menu with some interesting and tempting non-alcoholic options too. 100% would go again whenever I have the opportunity.

Came here for a quick bite to eat after getting a tattoo done, pretty cool place! Atmosphere and decor is real nice, really like the outdoor area especially. Never had a glass of Coke poured right from the bottle in a bar before! Paid 2 dollars for it though so hey, that’s a hell yeah from me. Popcorn chicken was pretty yum too, hit the spot!

Mr. Wilkinson's Pub offers a great atmosphere with a relaxed, welcoming vibe. Their lager is crisp and refreshing, and the popcorn chicken is a must-try—crispy, flavorful, and addictive. Perfect for a laid-back hangout with excellent food and drinks. Highly recommended!

The older male behind the bar is extremly rude. He picks and chooses who he wants to be polite to. They serve cheap wine at a ridiculous price. Avoid.

Really nice place. Friendly vibes, nice aesthetic, good food. We went for a couple of pizzas - one salami with honey which was excellent, then a special they had that night which was a bit of a yassified Hawaiian. Both were great. On the side we got the popcorn chicken - super crispy, nice bite sized treat and went well with a spicy mayo sorta sauce. For some extra vitamin k and iron we also got the broccoli salad which was also very tasty with a nice acidity to the dressing. Overall a really good experience - another little gem on Lygon.

Yelp
This is one of this bars that I discovered simply by walking past, so being the curious person that I am I decided to step inside and grab a drink. I was immediately impressed, and based on the other reviews I must have a reasonably good taste when it comes to bars. It's a fairly narrow affair, but it actually holds a lot more people than it immediately seems, and there is an outdoor area down the side, and one out the back (though the one out the back is much better than the one down the side). The staff were okay, but it was the atmosphere that really grabbed me. They also had some decent beers available. I wish I had more time to go and visit places like this.

Yelp
If you're a Brunswick East local (which I am) you should consider yourself lucky (which I do) to live so close to such an exceptional bar. Mr Wilkinson ticks all the essential boxes. + A warm and welcoming but trendy and hip vibe + A bartender who does The Sunday Age quiz with his patrons every week + Boozy cocktails, wines and local craft beers + A different food truck parked directly outside every night of the week + A charcuterie board so good you will weep No other venue will give you that "I've found something special" vibe, while also making you feel like you're right at home.

Yelp
Greatly underrated is the Mr Wilkinson is often found without as many people as you'd expect on any night of the week. It's got class and it's got a bar - what more could you honestly ask for? Named after Thomas Wilkinson - who I'm told founded the Brunswick suburb where the bar is found (thank you Google) - the character makes you feel a little like you've stepped into the set of Mad Men. Everything is new, but with an old wood and musky flavour in it. You could very easily see the suave men of the 50s in their jackets with their single malts at said bar taking to dames and questioning the amounts of money they have but not really thinking about it. You could park yourself along the bar and have a chant to the bartender, or huddle you and a friend or two in the more intimate spaces towards the back - candlelight and romantic. The wooden surfaces have started to ware in places, thanks to the frequency of its clientele, so get in quick before they need to re-polish the damn thing.

Yelp
Tom Wilkinson is a British character actor who you might remember from such cinematic delights as The Full Monty, Shakespeare in Love, and um, Rush Hour. Why am I telling you this? I'm really not sure because he is not the Mr Wilkinson in question at this time. The Mr Wilkinson I want to tell you about is a very fine wine bar in Brunswick East, named after Thomas Wilkinson who founded the Victorian suburb of Brunswick 150 or so years ago. If this bar is modelled at all on Thomas W then he must've been quite a dapper and classy dude. The interior is dark wood and muted greys, a sophisticated palate in keeping with the fine array of wines, beers and spirits behind the bar. The walls are adorned with a regular rotation of exhibited works by local artists. Beneath them you'll find booth seating for larger groups, whilst stools line the bar if you fancy a chat with the bartender. Towards the back are smaller candlelit tables, and there's a neat little courtyard out the back too. Just so no space goes to waste, there's a rather unique narrow outdoor area running the length of the bar, which makes for an ideal smoking area.

Yelp
Mr Wilkinson has to be, if not the coolest, one of the best bars in the Brunswick area. Located close to restaurants on Lygon Street, it offers heaps of seating either at the bar, on a comfy couch or the traditional table-chair combo. There's a great selection of beers, wine and cocktails. You will also find loads of books and magazines lying here and there for your perusal if need be. It is the perfect place to grab a drink and chill on your own or meet up with mates after a day's work. Also, Taco Truck and Beatbox Kitchen are parked outside on Wednesdays and Thurdays respectively from 6pm. To make things even better, Mr Wilkinson (the legend he is) will let you eat in-house if you buy a drink so I don't know about you but, a beer and a Raph is a winning combo for me!

Yelp
Me W is a slim luscious little wine bar. Space is a bit upright but patrons and staff alike are friendly and welcoming. A reasonable wine list and interesting international beers available on tap. A great spot to grab a pre or post dinner drink. Excellent spot to impress a second or third date!

Yelp
If your a local brunswick east resident you would have definitely waltzed through these doors a few times. The staff are always bubbly, friendly and quite talkative. It is a bar i always feel very welcomed to. The seating can be tight at times and it doesn't have the largest capacity, but i definitely recommend heading in for a beer or wine and grabbing a seat outback in the sun.

Yelp
A secret gem on Lygon St in Brunswick. Lovely bar with a great atmosphere, friendly staff and proper drinks menu. Food is also good, would recommend their pizza's! Probably one of my favourite casual bars for very occasion! One minor thing is that you can't pay by card under $20, which is a bit inconvenient

Yelp
Just stumbled along this place around 4:30 one afternoon and popped in for a drink. Laidback vibe, lots of space, with a glass-ceilinged spot at the back to let light in. Friendly service and reasonable prices. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Have visited here a few times now since moving to Brunswick, but this is the first time I've been with friends. It is a really cosy bar on Lygon Street that is full of warmth and charm. There are games for you to play, magazines and books to read and some really comfy couches. I'm pretty sure dogs are welcome too as I saw a pooch lounging round at the front of the bar. There is a pretty good selection of beers in bottle and also a couple on tap. They also do some amazing cocktails and a hot toddy to die for. I will for sure be back to sample their cocktails. They also have food trucks out the front a few times a week, but not sure the days. Great bar, could easily be my local.

Yelp
It's great to have a bar like Mr Wilkinson in the near by area or any suburb for that matter. But, Mr Wilkinson can't be in just any suburb. There's a reason for that, Yes, it's history based, but I'm not telling- you'll just have to dine in to find out for yourself. A warm friendly and attentive welcome was (yes I'm biting Jackie's line) was experienced on arrival. The food menu looks pretty good although I only glanced at it between very brief waits for things. The wine selection by the glass is okay-y but not too bland or uninspiring. But with reasonably priced cocktail and other drinks, it'd be pretty hard to go wrong. The best feature here are the enclosed courtyard areas, which are really quite charming. You do have to contend with smokers however, but I suppose that just means a Ying Yang thing going on. To surmise, it's more of a laid back low key venue. Even better when there's a food truck outside!
