Yes my friends... the intrepid search for good Chinese food in Phoenix, AZ continues. Tonight's saga: Mr. Wong, 19th Ave. First time ordering from Mr. Wong under its new identity as "New Mr. Wong" ("new chef, new menu, new style," boasts the mailer). It was delivery - I decided to chance it and respond to a promotional brochure delivered some time in mid-January, 2019). Outcome? Disappointing.
The Vegetable Chow Fun (not the real chow fun made with big wide 3" wide, flat noodles like you get in New York / San Francisco - this chow fun is made with 1/2" flat noodles) had almost zero flavor. :-( Same problem with the Mongolian Chicken, which I ordered "extra, extra hot." It had neither heat, nor flavor... and certainly, nothing "extra" (except perhaps the quantity?). It was essentially just a gigantic tinfoil container of flavorless chicken and onions. Crazy. Doesn't the new chef taste the dishes he churns out? Lastly, I got the pot stickers - not at all crispy (which is how I like them), but the flavor was passable and they came with a HUGE vat of dipping sauce (which primarily consisted of soy sauce). I dumped that salt-fest of a sauce on the other two dishes and then added some Sriracha I had on hand to make things edible. Honorable mention: the portions are extremely generous, if you don't mind what is perhaps the blandest Chinese food in the area (and that's really saying something!). Sad to say, would not order again. On to the next adventure. Good Chinese, I know you're out there somewhereeeee...
