I have been shopping at Kiwi for nearly 20 years. I will not any longer, and I will push friends to reconsider as well.
I finally started taking note of their frequent price hikes and it's clear to me that this is not a business that is invested in preserving the community that has supported its growth.
Please consider shopping at Horseraddish Market which is literally 4 blocks away.
Since COVID I just assumed Kiwi's never-ending hikes were just a reality of selling healthier foods in an expensive market like NYC. I was shocked to discover Horseraddish--a store with far less foot traffic and visibility in our neighborhood--selling the same items as Kiwi and Food Town for sometimes several dollars less. Clearly it's possible, and we should be supporting businesses that are trying.
Kiwi's produce pricing isn't terrible, but it's not that great either...and it's rarely organic or fresh. Things spoil quickly, as if Mr. Kiwi can't quickly sell through their stock. Horseraddish has organic and sustainable options that are significantly cheaper.
BUT...the price gauging of staples is completely unacceptable. The prices of milk, coffee, cereal, eggs, etc at Kiwi should be illegal, and I will be sending a complaint to Julia Salazar's office about price gauging at this location. It may not be a crime yet in this city, but what a perfect example of why it should be.
We need to push back against businesses who are taking more from our neighborhood than they are contributing. I encourage everybody who cares about our community to make better choices.
It's a shame.
