A Rat Lover's Tour of the World

"Outside of Austin, Texas, off of an uneventful stretch of Highway 71, sits a U-turn worthy site for the squirrel worshiper in us all. Standing at 14 feet tall, Ms. Pearl beckons anywhere from 30 to 100 passersby a day from the highway to have their picture taken with her. If you’re wondering why she is clutching a pecan bigger than your head, it probably has something to do with the nearby Berdoll Pecan Candy & Gift Company, a family-owned business that includes a gift shop, a pecan orchard, and an enormously adorable squirrel statue. Originally constructed in August of 2011 by Blue Genie Art Industries for Berdoll, Ms. Pearl received her sassy name from a customer as part of a contest. In 2015, the squirrel goddess received a facelift in the form of a fresh coat of paint as well as a deck to support her many worshipers. She is available 24 hours a day and while the nearby gift shop has regular business hours, there is an eternally available vending machine outside the shop with fresh, full-sized pecan pies replenished daily for any late night, squirrel-inspired snacking needs." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Ms. Pearl the Giant Squirrel is pure Americana at its finest. Quirky, unexpected, and absolutely delightful. This is one of those roadside stops you didn’t know you needed until you see it—and then you can’t stop smiling. Be sure to actually get out of the car (especially if you’re stopping by the 24-hour vending machine nearby) and take it all in. It’s weird, wonderful, and completely unforgettable. A must-stop for anyone who loves classic American roadside charm.

Stop and see her day or night! And since I have have seen her in both times, I would suggest day! Be careful with lites as you park closer to the store and walk across the parking lot. Always fun if you can have another family take your picture. Remember, no climbing Ms. Pearl, simply enjoy her beauty and allow others to do the same!

Honestly this was a whimsical visit. It’s just good silly fun. We were stuck in horrible traffic for almost an hr to get here. You may have an audience while taking pix. We went right before Easter. It would have been cuter with the pecan. Inside there are free samples of so many flavors of pecans. The only catch is the bags they sell are big and go for $20. Nothing smaller. Cute lil tourist attraction. Clean bathrooms. If you pass by it, definitely stop by on the way back!

I have driven by this place many times but never stopped. Today I decided to stop for some peaches and I’m glad we did. The staff was very friendly and accommodating (which was appreciated, as I had my toddler with me). The peaches are amazing and they have fabulous roasted pecans too. They also other honey sticks, candy and other cute gifts and souvenirs. Oh! And they have a very clean restroom. Of course I had to let my child visit with the big squirrel and take some souvenir photos to commemorate the even. I will definitely be stopping by here again when I’m in the area.

Ms. Pearl is not camera shy at all. In fact she is super photogenic and eagerly awaits travelers. She is the mascot and greeter, that's a full time gig. 24 hours a day she ready for a picture at night she is full lit and at her post.

Love coming here when we are around this area. It’s nice and the store they have samples of different pecans it’s almost your average gift shop but the things are insanely priced. I personally like to come here to mark and anniversary and I like coming to just see something really nice. The staff is always nice and understanding of all their customers.
