The journey to the summit of Mt. Adams (Pahto or Klickitat) is certainly a test of both physical strength and will. Starting at 7 p.m. on May 19 and ending at 4 p.m. on the 20th, this 21-hour adventure was full of challenges and surprises. Snow-covered roads forced me to stop at an elevation of 4,500 feet and hike 10 miles to an altitude of 7,900 feet. Early morning lightning storms and UFO activity added a touch of mystery to the journey, while a brief respite in the “lunch counter” area built strength for the rest of the climb. From Pikes Peak to the actual summit, every step of the way was accompanied by breathtaking views and the thrill of gliding. Though it was a deviation from the original route, the 32-mile hike was certainly an unforgettable experience and one that should be attempted by every hiker.

Mount Adam's is a spectacular sight when it comes into an unobstructed view. It is the 2nd tallest mountain in Washington and the third tallest in the Cascade Mountain Range. This dormant sleeping giant is a stratovolcano, nestled between a few of its partners in crime, Mount Rainier to the north and Mount Hood in Oregon to the south, and sits just to the east of its more active relative, Mount Saint Helens, who's last major eruption happened in May of 1980. This behemoth reaches a height of 12,281 ft and stands at around 9800 feet above the valley floor. There are numerous glaciers on Mt Adams that feed many streams, rivers, and it's lush green forests. Mount Adams is also known as Pahto or Klickitat by the Native Americans, and a 1/3 to 1/2 of its mass, on its eastern side, is designated Yakima Nation Territory. Mt Adams is a great beginner mountain. It's relatively safe via south climb and crevasse free. Most climbers spent a night at the lunch counter, but it's definitely doable as a day hike. We left at 3:30 am, spent around 11 hr total to reach the summit and get back to the car.

Mt Adam’s was a great hike. The road up to the trailhead is a little sketchy but a fun drive up if you’re into the thrill. Lunch Counter is a great spot to camp and has good access the the trail up to the peak. Overall great experience!

Mount Adams, known by some Native American tribes as Pahto or Klickitat, is the second tallest peak in Washington, standing at 12,281ft. I started the expedition to the summit on Friday May 19 at 7PM and finished on Saturday May 20 at 4PM. The trip took about 21 hours total. At this time, the access road was still snow-packed, so I had to park several miles from the South Climb trailhead at around 4,500 ft. With that said, the sun seemed to be actively melting the snow during the day. I left the parking lot at 7PM and walked about 10 miles up to 7,900 ft. At around 2 AM, I noticed a significant lighting storm + some potential UFO activity higher up on the mountain and decided to rest on some lava rocks until 4 AM. I resumed my journey and arrived at the "lunch counter" area around 6 AM, as the sun was rising. The "lunch counter" is a lava rock field at approximately 9,500 ft, which is a good spot to rest and have a snack. From there, I continued up the mountain to Pikers Peak around 11,600 ft. This was another good spot to take a break before ascending to the true summit at 12,381 ft. I spent roughly 15 minutes at the summit before descending down the mountain. The weather made for some good glissading conditions. There were nice opportunities to glissade from the true summit and from Pikers Peak. Although I ended up glissading a bit too far down the western face of the mountain, this made for an awesome and exhausting experience. I had to hike through some wilderness and do some rogue climbing to get back on to the path around the South Climb trailhead and access road. On Saturday, I clocked about 22 miles of hiking, and according to my Apple Health data, the total distance of the hike was roughly 32 miles over the course of two days. Even with the challenging weather conditions and the long distance of the hike, climbing Mount Adams was an amazing experience!
