24 Best Things to Do in Bali

The 24 Best Things to Do in Bali

"On an island full of natural beauty, Mount Batur (or “Gunung Batur”) and its serene surroundings might be the most dramatic destination of all. The 5,600-foot volcanic marvel contains Bali’s largest crater lake—a splendid cycling site and slopes ripe for hiking with picturesque villages along the way. Hiking—or simply seeing—Mount Batur is an essential Bali to-do. Be vigilant about monitoring the news and local alerts about possible volcanic activity. If you want a better chance of reaching the peak without thick clouds obscuring the view, avoid the rainy season. The sunrise, as seen from the peak, is spectacular. Not for the faint of heart—or anyone who loathes early-morning wake-up calls—the ascent takes around two hours. But once you’ve reached the top, you might witness one of the most majestic mist-sheathed vistas you’ve ever seen." - Travis Levius

Mount Batur - Landmark Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"What's this place all about? On an island full of natural beauty, Mount Batur (or “Gunung Batur”) and its serene surroundings might be the most dramatic destination of all. The 5,600-foot volcanic marvel contains Bali’s largest crater lake—a splendid cycling site and slopes ripe for hiking with picturesque villages along the way. Anything we should be sure to see? The sunrise, as seen from the peak, is spectacular. Not for the faint of heart—or anyone who loathes early-morning wake-up calls—the ascent takes around two hours. But once you’ve reached the top, you might witness one of the most majestic mist-sheathed vistas you’ve ever seen. Is it easy to navigate? You can trek the volcano alone, but the lack of signage means you’ll constantly have to ask for directions. We recommend booking a tour or hiring a local guide—just be sure to vet them. If trekking is too strenuous, head to one of the many traditional villages for volcanic panoramas. Why should we make the time for this? Hiking—or simply seeing—Mount Batur is an essential Bali to-do. Be vigilant about monitoring the news and local alerts about possible volcanic activity . If you want a better chance of reaching the peak without thick clouds obscuring the view, avoid the rainy season." - Travis Levius

We started the hike to Batur with our guide at 3am. The hike was 2 hours and very easy. The sunrise at the top was magical. The view is really breathtaking. You can see the lake, Agung and even the sea. We cooked eggs with the hot steam of the vulcano for breakfast. Recommend you to do this hike!

Breathing sunrise. But the hiking is very hard and you need to have good physical fitness. If not you can choose jeep or motorbike. But they only go to certain height. And you might need to get a jacket because the place is very cold. You can rent them before hike dtart. View is amazing and our guide helped us a lot to ho to the top of the mountain.

Climbing Mount Batur for the sunrise was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had in Bali. We woke up at 3:30 AM and drove from the hotel to a meeting point, where we switched to a jeep for the adventurous ride up the mountain. The sunrise view was breathtaking — many tourists even sit on their car roofs just to watch the first light over the volcano. It’s very cold in the early morning (even in summer), so be sure to bring a jacket, sweater, or shawl. The organizers also provide breakfast and hot tea, which was really nice. The cost was about IDR 200,000 per person (each jeep seats 4 people). After the sunrise, we also visited Black Lava Gunung Batur Rest Area and the unique black lava fields. The volcanic rocks and dramatic landscape made the experience unforgettable. Overall, Mount Batur is a must-visit adventure in Bali — the combination of sunrise, volcano views, and black lava makes it absolutely worth it.

Awesome hike for beginner-intermediate. Its a quick 2 hour hike and lots of breaks in between. There are some steep treks but manageable. View is definitely worth it at the end.

This trekking trip was truly unforgettable. At first, We planned to go by jeep, but by my mistake I ended up booking the trekking instead. Since I hadn’t practiced beforehand, I couldn’t manage the whole trail, so halfway through I had to continue by motorbike. The way back was smooth, though the path was a little slippery because of the rain the day before. Overall, it was a really fun and memorable experience.

Absolutely breathtaking sunrise! The hike was worth every step—watching the first light spill over the mountains was unforgettable. Peaceful, scenic, and highly recommended for early risers.

The most amazing sunrise hike. We went up at about 3 am and hiked all the way up to see the sun come up. We had one guide that was recommended to us and it was very unique. I highly recommend going down through the back side of the mountain for an even more unique experience.

Beatiful mountain. We wanted to go without a guide. But they told us to pay 200 000 per person. When we came back to our scooters somebody had taken our helmets:( but we Found them 100 meters away.
