We had amazing experience at Lakeside Retreat. The owner and management team have done a great job on planning experience inside the resort, the guest service, the culinary cuisine and activities are excellent. They are very kind to offer kids activities as well. It’s worth mentioning that there’s a most beautiful tennis court inside the resort. Every tennis player would be impressed by the design and location of the court. We enjoyed the fireplace in our room so much, the New Zealand warmth makes the atmosphere so cozy! Hope we can come back soon!

Our first impression of the lakeside villa (Puaka) was not positive. They hadn’t prepared the beds as we’d asked them to and the house is big but not well-designed: there are no hooks/hangers by the door for jackets and sweaters, the bathroom has no divider around the shower so water goes everywhere all over the floor (we made a towel perimeter, see pic), the huge bathrooms don’t have a bath, which would be a great way to enjoy the stunning view from the bathroom and is also very helpful with small kids, and there isn’t a screen in front of the fire place—a major hazard for kids. But perhaps most disappointing of all, there is no lake access from our villa or on the entire property as a whole! This was a shocking discovery. We’re looking over one of the country’s most spectacular lakes and had been so excited to take a dip. We were also surprised to learn that breakfast doesn’t start until 8:30. We’re used to eating as a family at 7. We were able to sit down at 8 but that still felt late. I was also bummed to learn there’s no gym—even just a shack with free weights would be appreciated—and we didn’t love seeing the mounds of dead trees piled all around our house. We get that it’s part of forest conservation but it’s an eyesore. The positives were the comfortable beds, the outdoor hot tub, the extremely calm and quiet surroundings, the amazing stargazing (we didn’t make it to the observatory, which I recognize is a big perk of the place), the excellent service, and the delicious food. They brought dinner to our room (since we didn’t want to endure a 6-course tasting menu with small kids), and they arranged a babysitter one day so that we could hike around Aoraki. It’s probably the nicest spot in the area but for the cost, it should address the issues above.

The Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat, nestled near the stunning turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki, is not just accommodation - it is a destination that defines luxury and natural wonder. Our stay here was an absolute highlight of our trip to New Zealand, and we cannot recommend it highly enough. The beauty of the property is simply breathtaking. The culinary experience at the on-site restaurant was equally magnificent. The food was fresh, beautifully plated, and genuinely delicious, showcasing the best of local New Zealand produce. But the true magic begins after sunset. Situated within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, the stargazing opportunities here are unparalleled. What truly sets this retreat apart, however, is the warm and genuine hospitality provided by the hosts and staff. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel like welcomed friends. Their attention to detail, personalized service, and commitment to ensuring our stay was perfect went above and beyond expectation. The Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat offers an escape where world-class luxury meets untouched wilderness. If you are seeking spectacular views, incredible food, a celestial experience, and the kindest service, this is where you must stay.

While this is likely the best 'luxury' option in this area and the location is quite optimal relative to Mt. Cook and Lake Tekapo, the resort is exorbitantly priced for what it offers. My family and I spent 2 nights in a 2 bedroom villa and were shocked that there was absolutely no service, which is not what would expect when paying >$1,300 USD per room per night. Starting from having to load and unload our own bags from our car to eating food prepared by the chef which was absolutely inedible to the point we had to send it back to the kitchen, this retreat needs a reality check of what it takes to be a luxury hotel that can garner charging ultra luxury prices. While the people were nice, the service and the quality of the room were a miss for the price of the stay. The highlight was Adrien, the astroguide, who was very passionate about the night sky. I might recommend staying somewhere else that is a better value for the money. I stayed in 7 ultraluxury lodges on my trip to NZ and this one had the worst food quality and service, especially relative to the price.

We stayed here for 3 nights. And what a special place that is. The villas are so spacious and beautiful. Very private and secluded. With the gorgeous views from every window and especially the shower room. Beautiful lake is right nearby, so as mt Cook. They have tennis court, star gazing observatory. And all kinds of animals which our son especially enjoyed. The food is amazing and delicious, so fresh and presented beautifully. Luke is the owner who is the most kind, amazing person. Very personable and nice. You’ll have everything you need here, there is no need to leave anywhere and just have the most relaxing time. People who work here are all very helpful and friendly. There is plenty of walks you can do just inside the retreat. Highly recommend this place, as we are going to be back for sure. Beautiful place❤️

I just left the Mt Cook Lakeside retreat this morning and felt like I had to write this review asap while the memories are still fresh in my head. Luke (the owner) and his entire staff not only made us feel like vips, but they made us feel like family. Everything from the food to the villas to the service was first class and done with love. Waking up to the majestic scenery and gentle bellowing of the pet cows was a once in a lifetime experience. My husband went for walks with the owner’s Springer Spaniel Max and he said it was probably the most fun he had on our entire trip to NZ. On our second day there I was not feeling well, Luke volunteered to drive me to town for a visit to the medical center. Talk about going above and beyond!! the Mt Cook lakeside retreat will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Thank you for an unforgettable 3 days!

We went to experience the world class dining and found that our high expectations were exceeded by far. (We are locals and did not use the accommodation). Each course was exquisitely prepared and faultlessly presented; each one a standout! We were served well and were able to meet the chef afterwards. It was a very special and memorable night.

A spectacular and very special place to stay; tranquillity with stunning views and surrounds. The hosts and team were wonderful, and Anna was extremely helpful in organising our trips with a local fishing guide and to the Tasman Lake and Glacier. All her communication was prompt, she was friendly, and her suggestions were spot on. The Chef’s Tasing Experience at the Moraine Lodge was outstanding, in particular the perfectly cooked venison, with divine herbed potatoes, and strawberry dessert. We had an amazing stargazing experience with Benny, who was very knowledgeable, and the experience came with a tipple from the wine cellar. A wonderful, relaxing stay with lots of thoughtful details; highly recommended.
