The Ultimate Japan Itinerary for 2025: From 1 to 3 Weeks

"For the best panoramic views of Sapporo I recommend Mount Moiwayama — it’s a 30–60 minute hike (or accessible by cable car) that rewards you with sweeping city vistas." - Matthew Kepnes

Coming up at dusk, the 2 sections of ropeway are quite good, when the night falls, astonishing views show! So suggest no need to go up early,

It's ok. I give this attraction 3 stars because you never really know if you would have the thick fogs blocking the scenery. We got unlucky when we went up and because our itinerary was tight, couldn't afford to use the coupon on another night. It was icy cold at the top and nothing to see but we made our own fun.

Moiwayama Mountain offers an incredible view over Sapporo, especially around sunset. To get to the top, head to the cable car entrance, buy your ticket, and take the first cable car followed by another small train-like lift. The whole journey doesn’t take too long, and the view at the top is absolutely worth it. It gets quite chilly up there, even in summer, so bring an extra layer. There’s also a restaurant at the summit, but you’ll need to book several weeks in advance. Just be prepared for a bit of a queue when heading back down after sunset. Would definitely recommend it.

Horrible experience! Beautiful day so went to see the sunset up here around 5:30 pm. Got to the top around 6:45-7:00 (yes it took that long!). By the time we got to the top it was dark (beautiful view) but also very cold. The line to get back down went up 2-3 stairways and outside in the freezing cold. Probably around a 2-3 hour wait. We panicked. We finally figured there was a road to the middle larger lift so walked down the stairs to two small glass exit doors and went out. Used our phone flashlights to take us down a beautiful path to the middle level. Saved the day, but the people there said there was no way to walk down. Wrong! Thank goodness, we got down in good time but they were still allowing hundreds up. Bypass this is you care about time or kids who might suffer in long lines.

23rd August 2026 Must visit Iconic View Point I hike up with my husband and had a wonderful 1.5hrs Up Up Up trail with nature & greens Upon arrival there were clean toilet at the Main station building. A cafe & a restaurant as well as souvenir shop Its clean and well organised place. We bough souvenir, had coffee and some pastry while wait for night fall Unfortunately today was a cloudy day and it was foggy and a bit windy Patience paid as there was a clear glimpse of the view from view point of Sapporo We stay until 7:30pm then went down to our surprise was we had a good 3 mins view as we take the last cable car down Memorable time created if you are thankful

One of the popular and famous mountain in the city of Sapporo. There are two set of cables that you can take to the tops of the mountain if you take both of them. But you can also only take the first one to the halfway point, the view of the city still good, but the top of the mountain is much better specially at night! But the night time temperature is very cool and maybe windy also even in the summer time. So have a windbreaker or jacket ready. The view is worth a million bucks! There also a very nice restaurant up there call The Jewel. Reservations only especially for the dinners, because the view.

I reached the summit of Mt. Moiwa on a beautiful day in 2022, accompanied by two new Japanese friends. They had spent the entire day showing me around this beautiful city. Standing at the peak, gazing at the panoramic view of Sapporo City, Ishikari Bay, and the surrounding mountains, it was an unforgettable memory. Missing Hokkaido, loving Sapporo <3

Visiting Mt. Moiwa was one of the highlights of my trip to Sapporo. If you are in the city, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary — especially in the evening! To reach the top, you need to take the ropeway (cable car), which costs 700 yen one-way (round trip is available too). The ride itself is smooth and enjoyable, offering great views as you ascend the mountain. Once you arrive at the upper station, there is an additional mini cable lift to reach the very top observation deck, which is definitely worth taking. The real magic begins at the summit observation deck. I went up in the evening to catch the famous night view of Sapporo, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The entire city lights up below you — an endless sea of sparkling lights stretching out into the distance. It’s one of the most beautiful city night views I’ve seen in Japan, and it’s very romantic and peaceful at the top. The facilities are well-maintained, and there is a small souvenir shop and café where you can relax while enjoying the view. Everything is very well organized, and the experience felt smooth from start to finish. For just 700 yen for the ropeway, this is an experience that is absolutely worth it. Whether you are traveling solo, with friends, or as a couple, the view is something you shouldn’t miss. I would especially recommend going up around sunset and staying to watch the city lights appear — it’s truly memorable. If you’re visiting Sapporo, don’t miss Mt. Moiwa.
