Google
Really glad we found this place. Easy to find off the highway, plenty of parking, and lots of seating inside. Airy atmosphere and clean too. A great selection of food and specialty drinks to choose from. Service was friendly, food came quick, and we all enjoyed our meals. The hardest part was trying to decide from so many options.

MudPenney is one of those places that consistently delivers with their main thing. In other words, I’ve had espressos, cortados, lattes, and pour overs, and they do a great job time and again with their coffee. The only time I remember not being thrilled was with a specialty drink that had really intense flavoring; some of those can be pretty sweet. But sometimes that’s what you’re going for I suppose! Their food is also quite good. Can feel on the pricier side sometimes. Their space is really attractive, and their staff has been consistently friendly. If you’re going in just for a quick coffee, they have area inside the front entrance that is small but never too busy, as their main draw is the larger cafe side where you can order food for breakfast and lunch and is a great place to meet up with others.

One of our favourite places! Angela and Kevin are great breakfast burritos (they sometimes have this maple syrup/bbq sauce on the side - with that, it was one of the best meals of my life, I miss it!) I also really recommend the lavender lemonade if it’s offered. Also, great name!

Google
The place has a modern vibe, the service is amazingly friendly, the food makes you feel good about eating it without any guilt! Full of flavor this was exactly what I was looking for! We had the wildcard and Arnold Palmers and some capuchins, lemon square for dessert. The wildcard portion was enough for two of us! My decaf cappuccino was great nice dark roast flavor, can’t tell it’s decaf. The lemon square was great as well specifically if you like lemon flavor deserts. We will be back cove the place and food!

Google
Great spot with plenty of parking. Eggs were perfectly cooked and the breakfast sausage they serve here is probably the best I’ve ever had. I had the butterscotch Betty latte with oat milk and it was fantastic! Friendly service and amazing food - definitely going to come back and try the French toast!

Google
Food was delicious, great fall day, so we sat outside... server could have checked on us, maybe at least once, before the check but over all great experience and great food.

Google
Atmosphere: cute and good amount of seating available Food: delicious and tasted very fresh. Reminded me of an old spot I used to love - Marie Catribs - in relation to the food and taste Drinks: especially delicious honey nut latte, great combination of syrup and espresso 10/10 will be coming back again

We came based on a recommendation and were happy that we did. We arrived at about 1:30 pm on a Saturday and the place wasn't busy luckily as the parking lot is smallish. A friend and I both got the French toast, another friend got the Fire Toast and another got the BLT sandwich. We all liked the food though the size was a bit smaller than our usual. The meals came reasonably quickly and our waitress visited our table enough times to ask if we needed anything. The atmosphere was pretty nice as well.

Yelp
Wasn't a great experience. Ingredients in the wrap were layered in a way so you got bites of a single food- all chicken, then all cheese, then all lettuce. It was also dry. They were initially out of the desired milk, then made the wrong sandwich, then their computers were down. These are all things that happen but stacked upon each other didn't make for the best time!

Yelp
Mudpenny has a couple of locations around Grand Rapids. This downtown location is in an interesting location! Upon driving the the location, I wasn't sure Google Maps had taken me to the right place... but it did. It just felt like it was in the middle of a very industrial location. I got the Patatas Bravas and it was good! It was a flavorful dish, and it was presented beautifully. Honestly, I wish they had two eggs in that dish, instead of just one. The percentage of the eggs vs the potatoes was a bit off for me. I finished the egg in a flash, and the rest of the time I was just eating potatoes, which constituted at least 85% of the dish. But the dish was still good! The waiters there were really great though. Super friendly and helpful. The ambience was cute and clean. There is street parking!

Craig K.

Yelp
Found this place and decided to try it for breakfast. It's nice inside. They have a full coffee bar. I had a regular coffee which was good. The eggs Benedict was perfectly prepared. The server was very friendly. My only criticism is the high prices. It was almost $30 counting the tip. That is very expensive for breakfast. The portions are very big and I left full. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
Looking for your next brunch spot? I hit up the GR location of Mudpenny for the first time this weekend, and they checked off all my brunch needs! They're not a huge place, so I was pretty shocked at how easy it was to get a table on a Saturday morning. I also didn't realize they had their restaurant on one side and coffee/cafe on the other, but I thought it was definitely convenient for people who just wanted to drop by and grab a pastry and a latte! I tried their pistachio twist latte and it was *chefs kiss*. Not too sweet, but perfectly flavorful. For food, I ordered the Kevin Malone breakfast burrito. This boi was thick, and the fact that I managed to eat the whole thing is a testament to how tasty it was I added a little hot sauce for an extra kick, and 10/10 would recommend. My friend had the muddy cristo (and I ended up eating her leftovers so I can comment on it ). The perfect take on a monte cristo!!! I ate it without the syrup that's served on the side, and the french toast pulled its own weight in sweetness.

Kylie C.

Yelp
This literally filled me up the whole day. I chose the brioche for my French toast bread, and almost subbed the ham for a different meat (not a big ham fan). Glad I stuck with the o.g sandwich. The only thing I'd take away next time is the aioli/mayo sauce that's on here. I just feel like that flavor component didn't pair as well with the ham/cheese/syrup flavors already happening. It comes with a fried egg as part of the sandwich; I'll have to remember to ask for it sunny side up next time. Overall, very happy with this "to-go" order.

Nicole E.

Yelp
Parking lot behind the restaurant. Enter by the coffee bar and barista area. It's a chilled place. Cool and fun Lincoln homage wall art by the bathroom. Hannah is waiting on us today. She seems nice. I don't see an granola or was it an oatmeal pic I saw here. We were ready to order, but Hannah wasn't back to us until after she took another table's drink orders, took CC from another table and brought some items to a 3rd table. She's rather busy in our section. Ordered a green bancha tea and a maple bourbon latte (comes with oat milk) first. Then ordered a brunch wrap and the wild card, but I subbed turkey slices for the homemade sausage and requested the torn biscuit on the side. $52.21. No longer have any salads at the moment and no granola or oatmeal either. The maple bourbon latte is good. The brunch wrap was good with the chicken and garlic aioli. We both liked it this dish best. The wild is different, needed more flavor than just the garlic aioli. Lots of nice veggies. Brussel sprouts, spinach, red peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms, leeks maybe, onions, micro greens and red skin potato wedges and the over easy egg. Forgot to ask for the egg to be over hard. The side of sriracha is not the green top, had more of a tart and vinegary flavor to it. It's very filling though. I get why the biscuit is usually torn up into the wild card, it's super dry and tasteless. I wouldn't get that dish again. The brunch wrap was the way to go, lattes here are good as well.

Todd E.

Yelp
Rarely have I had a meal where I closed my eyes after every bite and just luxuriated in all of the flavors. But such was the experience with the Muddy Cristo. The cheese was perfectly melty. The ham almost caramelized. The powdered sugar not overdone. The only thing I might have done differently was exchanged the maple syrup for a berry compote. But the maple worked so well. I made that sandwich last as long as I could, and I was both sad and satisfied when it was done. I will be coming back!

Alex O.

Yelp
Easily the best breakfast I've ever had. The "Wild Card" was the dish of choice. I strongly encourage you to eat here. It's incredible.

Stephanie C.

Yelp
After looking at various brunch places, I wanted to try MudPenny since I see so many great options for dinners. Also, it's been something fellow Yelpers recommend as a great spot to go. We ended up going at like 1pm which ended up feeling more like lunch, but still delicious. The vibe was super cute, the entry-way was definitely smaller but then you realize there is another side that housed all the tables and chairs. We ordered the mountie and jimmy pesto after recommendation from our server and were not steered wrong. The mountie was great! If you like sweet potatoes, and even if you don't, you should try the sandwich. It was such a unique flavor and wonderful size. I also just appreciate the kettle chips that came along with it. I look forward to coming back again and trying more traditional breakfast/brunch food.

Yelp
Man, where do I start? The food was over the top amazing, and the service was on point from the beginning to the end. It's such a cute little coffee shop and the food will surprise you for sure. Don't be scared of the prices, because they definitely give you what you pay for! I would recommend the WildCard add sausage, and you won't leave hungry.

Zachary K.

Yelp
Food was amazing and came out fast. Service was great! It was a little confusing walking into the coffee shop with not much direction of where to go for food.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place for a while and Kaylee N said it's one of her favorite places so my boyfriend and I checked it out for breakfast this morning:) The aesthetic of this place was feeling modern and industrial to me. Black chairs and tables with exposed brick walls and modern art and light fixtures. The service was very kind and friendly. Started off by ordering some coffee: My bf ordered the Americano and I tried the Maple Bourbon Latte. Before I could even ask, our server told me she had oat milk available which is so awesome and I asked to have it made with that. The flavor of this latte was so good and I drank this to the very bottom. Yum! For food: My bf ordered The OG sandwich which has two fried eggs, white cheddar, garlic aioli, and some greens on a bun and he loved it! I couldn't decide between the Muddy Cristo or the Brunchwrap and our server recommended the Brunchwrap:) It comes with a choice of two dipping sauces and I unfortunately forgot the first choice and went with the garlic aioli as my dipping option. The Brunchwrap reminded me of Taco Bell but five times better with fresh ingredients. There's a crisp layer of latke (potato pancake), whatever meat you decide, cheesy scrambled eggs, spinach, tomato, and avocado inside a toasted tortilla. I loved it so much! It was a big portion and I finished almost the entire dish before getting full. Will definitely be coming back for the amazing coffee and other breakfast options in the near future.

Yelp
Food 8/10 Service 10/10 Ambience 10/10 The brunch wrap was really good. Bathroom has a changing table with diapers. It's a first for me and just thought it was a nice addition to a good experience, may help someone with kids decided on going here.

Yelp
Great little breakfast/brunch place. Great coffees as well. I really enjoyed the funky twists on some of the dishes. Very tasty !

Kimy P.

Yelp
Came here a couple months ago with my sister to have brunch and a work session. We sat in the stools facing the window and it was very comfortable. We ordered food and lattes before getting started and were pretty satisfied with what we got. Matcha oatmilk latte: 5/5 It was very rich and tasty, a good strong matcha flavor and not overly sweet. My sister liked the chicken salad sandwich with the GF bread, she says she could have eaten more. She did not like the strawberry latte, not much flavor aside from the coffee she said. As for me, I ordered a vegan option which was tofu scramble with a salad and roasted potatoes and vegetables. It was simple, yet delicious. I can't remember the name of it I think it was new beginning's but I highly recommend it! As for the location, if you like high tops this is the place to go and there is a parking lot on the side.

Yelp
Wanting a quick local lunch in Grand Rapids? Look no further than MudPenny. Also slinging some of the best espresso drinks around, MudPenny's sandwiches and pastries aren't to be messed with. The barista and other employees seem to truly care about their work and are super helpful and friendly, too. We got The Mountie: turkey, white cheddar, bacon, spinach leaves, maple sweet potato mash and mayo on naan bread. And the Chicken Salad Sandwich: honey chicken salad, almonds, cranberries, grapes , greens, and pickled red onions on naan bread. Wow. Just wow. Both sandwiches were delicious - the naan bread a nice touch. The chicken salad itself wasn't too mayo-y, either. The lattes are solid and on point. Oat milk by Oatly, which is always a plus. Other cookie and pastry options are plenty, like the mini amaretti cookies, or the larger mudslide cookies. Takeout? Yep. Dine in with table service? They've got that too. Their breakfast and other bites also look pretty awesome. If I visit Grand Rapids again, MudPenny would be a must go.

Tami B.

Yelp
Great little breakfast spot with excellent food and coffee! Everything is tasty and fresh and made in-house. Even the ketchup looked and tasted homemade. I had the Kevin Malone and the pimento cheese gave it a delicious twist. Can't wait to head back and try some other items. It's a small thing but having diapers available in multiple sizes with an actual changing table in the restroom was a nice plus for those dining with the littles!

Emma T.

Yelp
I came here for breakfast after being inspired by some great reviews on Yelp! :) There is a parking lot next to the building and ample street parking. The inside is cool and modern. There is a full coffee bar and a limited but delicious menu! I wanted to get several of the items but had to limit myself to just one. If you have folks that have a variety of dietary restrictions this place is great. They have everything from Keto and Vegan options. I got the Brunchwrap and it was DELICIOUS. I consider myself a breakfast burrito guru and this one can stand up amongst the best. It is tasty without being too heavy and offers an abundance of flavors beyond just egg. I also got an iced coffee. Delicious!

Dennis T.

Yelp
I had not been here since before the pandemic, and it was every bit as good as I remember. I had the chicken salad sandwich served on naan bread, I liked the pickled red onions on there, gave it just a little bit of a sweet acidic crunch. Cute inside, had a wonderful experience.

Amy S.

Yelp
The prices went way up and the services went way down. Very inconsistent. Used to be a staple, but there are just better options in town.

Nichole K.

Yelp
Fantastic spot to grab breakfast/lunch with a friend, group of ladies or a quick (and healthy) business meeting. They have a solid menu with awesome/interesting menu options that are locally sourced and super tasty. You're not going to leave feeling hungry no 'bad' about what you just ate. Great treats and coffee and the dining atmosphere is super cute too. Easy parking around/along side the store front. But you do have to drive... it's not very walkable from the usual spots.

John D.

Yelp
Mudpenny is a great place for breakfast and batch brew coffee. The coffee was amazing and the service was top notch.

Sujoy S.

Yelp
A clean, feel good breakfast place that puts a smile on your face with its inviting hosts, neat interiors and innovative menus (and their funny names like Kevin Malone or Angela Martin) I ordered the O.G. Sandwich which comes with poached eggs, greens and cheddar in milk buns and goes perfectly with the morning tea or coffee. My wife had the naan wrapped meat (forgot the name) and she was impressed too. This is a perfect breakfast place and we're sure about coming back soon!

Sinai P.

Yelp
The place is for sure a hidden gem on the outskirts of Downtown GR. It's like finding a bright cottage door in the middle of nowhere. I felt as if I was walking into a homey, warm place and I found myself just being energized sitting down at Mudpenny. The door leads you to a small cafe, with lots of baked goods, good scent of coffee and food mixed. Then the waiter lead us into the side room, which had all the tables for people to sit down for breakfast and brunch. This is one place that did not let me down when I got to see the place in real life. If the place was closer by, I'd go here much more often! Their menu had lots of vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free options. I'm usually a meat lover, so I'd never consider getting a vegetarian option, but the vibe here actually made me want one. So glad I did. I got the BrunchWrap(a personal favorite of the waiter whom I asked) that came with a tomato sauce, which was amazingly good. The ingredients in the BrunchWrap just went along so well with each other and started to melt in my mouth. It was very filling, thought it didn't seem like much. Didn't get any drinks. The BrunchWrap was $15 most of the other menus were ranging from $12-$16 Good parking just outside the restaurant

cullen k.

Yelp
$25 for a brunchwrap with sausage. Long way. Food was ok. Not sure why they want to charge $25 for a wrap. Waited 20 mins. Wrap was very good but $25 is out of this world.

Sarah P.

Yelp
What a find! The special Rosemary Latte that was recommended was superb! And the breakfast dishes, so fresh, and beyond flavorful. Thank you for a wonderful experience

Jessica G.

Yelp
I usually like MudPenny but today I was a little underwhelmed. I got this salad I hadn't tried before (the squash and the apple). I, for some reason, was hoping the roasted squash and chicken I added would be warm...but my entire salad was just cold. This could completely be my own assumptions getting in the way of my expectations but I was so sad when it was all cold. The flavors were good but the chicken I added appeared to be pre-cooked and dry. I ended up just removing it because it didn't taste right. I'm picky about my chicken being fresh so I'm a little tougher on places that do shortcuts. I also ordered lemonade and a couple of cookies. The lemonade was smaller than expected but I guess for $1.99 I shouldn't complain. I'm sure the cookies will taste good, they look tasty! Next time I'll order something different - I'll be back to upgrade the stars!

Heidi L.

Yelp
I love the food at MudPenny and to support local and a smaller business. However I just can not order coffee there anymore. I have learned my lesson for the last time. Everytime I wait an extra 10-15 min for coffee. No matter how far in advance I order it. Plus its one size and as pricey as the largest coffee at SB. This is there only downfall.

Whitney E.

Yelp
A nice atmosphere however, the coffee was so bitter and cold. Also, I wanted a hot latte but their steamer was out of service so they couldn't make any hot drinks. The waiter was nice but the service was slow. Food was good however this pancake cost us a pretty MudPenny... ($15!!) I probably wouldn't come here again.

Andrea M.

Yelp
Obsessed!!!! I loved the vibe of this place! Their decor from the ceiling to the walls made a statement! I absolutely loved that they know we are still living in a pandemic! All of the tables were spaces appropriately and the staff was masked, haven't seen that in a long time. The staff was so kind and helpful. We ordered the baked French toast and OG sandwich. Both were so fantastic and came out quick and hot! Syrup came with the french toast but we didn't need it, and you should definitely add crumbled bacon! This place is truly a little gem! We don't drink coffee drinks so we didn't try anything nor did we have pastries BUT we looked at the other tables and those items looked amazing!! We will come back time and time again!

Catherine K.

Yelp
Limited menu. Food was good but wanted more choices in the main foods. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Brie G.

Yelp
The five star reviews weren't kidding! This place is great. I love the decor and vibe of the place. Service was great! I had this: Avo Bravo 12 turkey, spinach, black beans, tomatoes, corn, avocado mash, tortilla strips, sriracha ranch dressing It was really good! Nice change of pace to have deli turkey in it instead of something heavier or just chicken. Perfect since I wasn't crazy hungry. Good portion size. The rest of my table really enjoyed their food as well. Pretty sure all of the plates went back to the kitchen empty! I'll be sure to return when I'm in town again. :)

Mark S.

Yelp
Food was very good and the service was excellent. Stopped by for lunch on the way to visit several local antique stores. The parking lot is rather small so you might have to park near by.

Stephanie E.

Yelp
Yum! Seriously this place is cute, great food and has a great atmosphere. I brought my mother who has difficulty walking and she had zero issues. The gluten free menu has a variety of options that were excellent! The GF bread tasted great. Food was excellent the jam was real (huge bonus for me as I make my own!) the ingredients were fresh and the combination of food was unique and simple and bursting with flavor. The portions were the perfect size. The bakery up front had a variety of options as well. Not many GF options at the time I went. But still an excellent breakfast! Looking forward to my next visit!

Dave G.

Yelp
Excellent food - wife got vegan wrap and I got a breakfast bowl. Both meals were excellent. To my surprise I traded her meals. And I always thought I was a carnivore. Our waitress was nice and attentive. The atmosphere is quaint - I noticed that most people stayed after meal and enjoyed conversation. My only complaint was my last bite had a hair in it. Which ended the meal for me. I never said anything. I know things like this can happen. But unfortunately for me this negative experience will probably will keep me away. As I struggle to get pass the thought of retrieving the hair from my mouth - Ugg However, you should give them a try. I believe you'll enjoy the overall experience. But I would encourage you to try it if you ever in the are.

Maribeth H.

Yelp
Good vibes and unique upscale brunch options. This was definitely a treat for the family, but I look forward to returning for just a date or adult gathering. When trying a spot for the first time, I always go for a vegetarian or vegan option to test the kitchen's palate and they did not disappoint! I had the Shroomer, their Pebble Creek mushrooms sandwich which was my kind of vibe!!! Layers of flavor that hit differently with every bite. The right amount of crunch, "meaty" texture, salt and creaminess combined with the freshness of herb blast in my mouth. Highly recommend if you're open to stretching your yum repertoire.

Amber M.

Yelp
Soooo good! If you're looking for a delicious breakfast sandwich in the cutest atmosphere, than look no further! They have so many choices for food and beverage! A beautifully designed space, very friendly staff and off street parking! The staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcome! I will definitely be coming back! (PS if you need to work or study, they have ample charging space!)

Gabrielle L.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Their drinks are fantastic. I used to get their lavender lemonade but I don't think they make that anymore

Loretta S.

Yelp
Loved everything about this little very knook worth going to. Egg sandwich (w arugula garlic mayo and melted cheese)w a side of bacon...good to start the day! Thank you guys your great happy helpful service..meant the world.

Yelp
MudPenny Can we just talk about one of our favorite places ever? Mud Penny has been a favorite meeting spot of ours for a few years and we've loved getting to know the totally awesome crew here. Wondering where the name MudPenny comes from? Well, check out their website. It's one of the coolest little history lessons you'll love to tell others about. They have an incredible food and coffee menu that never ceases to amaze us. Please don't pass up MudPenny as just a coffee bar, because it's so much more. They're a coffee bar, restaurant, roaster, and caterer! They opened their 2nd location in Ada Village last year and it is STUNNING. Current Menu Fav: Pistachio Chai w/ Oat Milk. We are totally obsessed with the creamy perfection of it. Stop on in, maybe we'll see you there

Aimee I.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and the burrito we had was amazing! Very friendly service as well. I would definitely stop by again if I'm the neighborhood.

Henry W.

Yelp
Deceiving when you walk in the door but they bring you to their dining area and it's very spacious, basic but clean and quaint or modern. I had the Turkey on Naan or as they call it the "Mountie" sandwich. This sandwich is to die for! Ingredients I never thought or imagined to put on a flat bread like this. Sweet potato mash with Spinach, Bacon and Turkey slices folded in half with a great sauce to finish it off! I would recommend this as a number one lunch spot just near downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. Service here is awesome, so don't let me forget to give them high marks on that aspect as well along with a very short wait for the wonderful sandwich I just described! If you haven't been, you have to try this place out!

Lisa L.

Yelp
The best pancakes I have ever had! Served with blueberry compote and real maple syrup. Soooooo good! The pourover coffee was excellent.

Rachel D.

Yelp
This is a great breakfast spot. I went to the downtown location and it was very nice. Good coffee and they had vegan options which was greatly appreciated.

Jonathan O.

Yelp
No wait. Friendly service. Amazing food. Delicious coffee. Clean restrooms. Haiku Long drive to find you Warm bean juice soothing my soul Oh, my lucky day

Mary N.

Yelp
This place was meh. The atmosphere is cute but the menu doesn't measure up. It sounds better than what it actually is. Overpriced and inattentive service, wouldn't go back.

Daniel D.

Yelp
A little off the beaten path, but worth the trouble finding. Staff was super friendly and attentive without being annoying. Had fancy toast with avocado and scrambled eggs on it. Sounds basic, but totally gourmet. The coffee was a little harsh for my liking, but my spouse loved it.

Megan B.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. The food took a bit long to get..we were the only customers at the time. The coffee was good. The presentation of the food was great and turned out to be just as delicious.

Sage H.

Yelp
If you're looking for somewhere tasty to try that is near the city but not right in the busyness of downtown, MudPenny is the place to go! They serve delicious breakfast and lunch. I personally have yet to try anything on their menu and not like it. The prices are a bit higher than some other breakfast places in the area but nothing unreasonable. Overall, I'd highly recommend giving them a try!
