The Mulia & Mulia Villas

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? More is more at The Mulia. Arriving here is nothing short of cinematic, with unfathomably vast grounds stretching out over rolling hills that fall into a dazzlingly blue Indian Ocean. Located on Bali's southern tourist zone of Nusa Dua, this is the kind of place where you can step foot onto the property and not leave for days at a time. What's the backstory? Owned by Mulia Group, Indonesia's leading property developer, The Mulia represents one of the only Indonesian-owned mega-resorts in the Nusa Dua area of Bali. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? These suites and villas are stunning, but lack a real sense of place. The furniture, the bedding, the color palettes are all almost European in their swankiness. That's not to say the rooms aren't luxurious and comfortable—they definitely are. Over at Mulia Villas, the villas range from one bedroom up to an opulent six-bedroom Mulia Mansion. Each villa comes with its own garden and private plunge pool, and every door can slide open in order to bring the outdoors in. And whether you're out exploring Bali all day or just catching some sleep on the resort's expansive beachfront, your villa's indoor and outdoor shower options, plus Jacuzzi tub, are a great way to unwind in the privacy of your quarters. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? No charge for Wi-Fi. It's good! Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? We hope you like buffets. At The Cafe, the main dining spot, there's something almost reminiscent of Las Vegas in terms of the scope of what's on offer. The resort reportedly keeps over 100 chefs on the payroll, and each meal offers options to cater to American, European, Chinese, and Japanese clientele. For a more sophisticated dinner experience, head over to Edogin, a Japanese restaurant, for sushi and teppanyaki. Table 8, the Chinese restaurant, has a truly encyclopedic menu offering dishes from all over China. And the service? The staff is very good at explaining how to navigate the enormous property. Make sure to ask the concierge to arrange a trip to nearby Uluwatu Temple for sunset—it's one of the most magical things you'll witness on Bali. What type of travelers will you find here? The Mulia's core client base leans toward Asian markets, so expect lots of Chinese families and elegant Hong Kong couples on honeymoon. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? On the drive in, you'll see that Nusa Dua isn't much of a neighborhood beyond the cluster of enormous beach resorts that take up most of this part of Bali. That being said, the front desk staff is more than happy to order taxis and drivers to show you around the more authentic parts of the island. Is there anything you'd change? It's not that I would change anything, but the most important thing to understand about The Mulia is that you aren't coming here for an authentic slice of Balinese culture. You're coming here for pampering, for the food, and for spectacular beach time. Any other hotel features worth noting? The excellent spa is well-equipped to help treat any jet lag, sunburnt skin, or achy muscles. It has a Finnish wood sauna, steam room, and an ice fountain cryotherapy room. It's also worth mentioning that each stay comes with one complimentary high tea to be enjoyed at your leisure. You can order it with English-style finger sandwiches, but we recommend opting for the Indonesian style, with such delights as tape goreng (cassava pyramids wrapped in banana leaf), lemper ayam (sticky rice with chicken), and kue lapis (layered rice flour pudding cake). Bottom line: Worth it? Why? It's not quite the same as staying in Ubud or any of the surf communities along the shore, but a couple of nights at The Mulia is an indulgent experience that will make anyone feel like a total rockstar." - Todd Plummer

The Best Resorts in Asia: 2018 Readers' Choice Awards

"The 219-room seaside Mulia & Mulia Villas in the southeastern tourist enclave of Nusa Dua is one of our readers' favorite resorts in Asia for a reason: The Indian Ocean is just steps away. The 20-room spa is well equipped to cure whatever ails you, from a Finnish wood sauna to a steam room, not to mention Bali's first (and presently, only) ice fountain room, set to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Within the spa, there are also both hot and cold water pools for you to alternate between—and the shock to your system is one way to get that circulation going, if you'd rather not hit the fitness center. Alternately, spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon over brunch at Soleil, a Mediterranean spot infused with Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Thai flavors, where you can indulge in a generous spread of meats, grilled seafood, and an epic dessert buffet." - CNT Editors, Betsy Blumenthal

Absolutely amazing stay in a private garden view villa. Luxury is an understatement! Service from butlers and staff in general was exceptional and the grounds were a tropical botanic garden paradise. Breakfast and dinner options were fantastic. Afternoon tea was a bonus and cocktail selections perfect. Highly recommend for total relaxation and being spoilt !

I’ve stayed in hotels all over the world, and I don’t think there is a staff that can beat Mulia for kindness, attention to detail and overall quality of service. They are genuinely that good. Be aware that the Villas sit on a hillside rising up from the main resort. It’s quieter, if that’s what you want. If you want a meal other than the one restaurant at the villas, it’s roughly a ten minute walk to other restaurants— plus the gym, beach, bars, etc are all down there. It was all exactly what we were ready for after 24 hours traveling from the US.

My friends and I had a wonderful stay at Mulia Villas. Everything from the get go was flawless, including the gentleman who came to greet us upon arrival at the airport. The service here is top notch (special shout out to Surya at The Living Room and Vrisa at The Lounge). Staff here made us feel looked after. The food here is no ordinary hotel food, every single meal we had here was delicious. Highly recommend! Will definitely return. The villas are also well worth the money for privacy of your own gazebo and lap pool.

Staying at the Mulia Villas for our honeymoon was one of the best decisions we made! Our villa was immaculate - spotlessly clean, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable. The staff were exceptionally warm and attentive, consistently going above and beyond to ensure our stay was both relaxing and memorable. The food was outstanding at every meal, it felt more like a work of art than just cuisine, whether it was breakfast, afternoon tea, or dinner. The pools, beach, and all the facilities were pristine and a true pleasure to enjoy. We couldn’t recommend Mulia Villas more highly, and we’re already looking forward to returning!

Our stay at the Mulia Villas was fantastic! The property is huge and very well maintained and presentable. The villas were beautiful and spacious with a large private pool and again, very well maintained. The butlers and staff were very friendly and helpful. We ate all meals strictly at the hotel and did not have any issues, they had good hygiene practices and the whole resort seemed very clean. The food at all the restaurants was great quality and so many options, especially at the main buffet. The accommodation and restaurants are quite pricey but I would say it’s definitely worth it for the great service and quality they deliver!

Could not fault the staff and service. The massive let down for us was that the villa we were given was metres away from a busy road. We could hear cars, lorries and motorbikes very loudly all day long. Not really the peace you would expect on holiday. Did not feel massively secure either. We therefore spent more time on the beach, and didn't really enjoy our villa.

We stayed at The Mulia Villas in Nusa Dua for 5 nights and were impressed by the beautiful, spacious villa and the overall luxury of the resort. Service was polished, and perks like daily high tea, cocktails, and breakfast at The Lounge were highlights. However, some aspects were disappointing for a resort of this calibre — the extra kids’ bed was over 500 AUD, a one-hour massage at the spa cost over 200 AUD, and despite multiple requests, they couldn’t provide a thin pillow, which affected our sleep comfort. A beautiful place, but not without its frustrations.

Our recent stay at Mulia Villas with our two teenagers in a 2 bedroom villa was an amazing and memorable experience. The luxury and opulence of the whole resort is difficult to put into words. However what really impressed us was how wonderful the staff were. There was no snootiness, instead just warmth, a genuine pride in their work and going above and beyond to make us feel valued and pampered. The butlers took time to get to know us and our plans so they could pre-empt our needs. They spoiled us on our anniversary, which was a lovely touch. The resort is huge but having the buggy service made everything easily accessible. The number of pools and restaurants meant no area ever felt crowded, even in high season. The beach is beautiful and serene. The afternoon tea is to die for - the real highlight of the trip! We were able to choose between the amazing buffet and a la carte breakfasts with more types of food that you can count. We ate at all the hotel restaurants for dinner, and while they are not cheap the cost was not unreasonable given the nature of the resort.
