I popped into Mulot & Petitjean, Dijon’s last remaining artisanal maker of pain d’épices, and left with gifts that make you forgive winter. Its story is civic: founded by Barnabé Boittier in 1796, taken on by Louis Mulot in 1841, later merged with Petitjean and Céry, fixing the house’s name. Inside the shop the shelves are ordered - nonnettes, spiced loaves and boxed gifts that speak of slow dough, honey not sugar, and long maturation. A tasting confirmed it: fine-wheat crumb, tempered spice and honey depth from patience, and the classic orange filling. Nonnettes are tastefully spiced and jam-filled - clementine, raspberry, blackcurrant, orange. Perfect souvenirs of a unique time and place. The sales assistance was excellent.
