Muratie Wine Estate

Booked a table for lunch at Muratie yesterday as a random choice. Met the estate owner on the way in, who is a very friendly and helpful fellow. At the restaurant we were greeted by Martin, who was just a great guy and ensured we had a wonderful meal with super wines in the beautiful outdoor seating area (thank you, Martin). We were also very pleasantly surprised by the open door art spaces and completely relaxed atmosphere of the estate, and we were lucky enough to see the Merlot being brought in and the beginnings of the wine making process. All in all, just a brilliant experience. I’d recommend a visit to the estate and a meal at the restaurant without a moment’s hesitation and we’re already thinking about our next visit when the opportunity to escape the European winter next presents itself. Five stars without doubt.

I am reviewing the restaurant, not the accommodation. We ordered Beef Samosas & Seared Tuna from the small plates menu. Both were good. Portions were v generous. For mains we ordered 2 x Mussels (mediocre at best. Definitely not fresh) & 1 steak & fries (OK. Slight better than mediocre) Overall. Liked the location. Very rustic. Hens wandering between the tables. Wine was good & fairly priced. Shame about the mains. Would I return? Probably not. There are too many good/great restaurants in the winelands.

What a disappointing experience. On arrival there was no one to meet us at the entrance of the wine tasting area. When our host arrived he did not introduce himself or his role in our experience.I explained that this was my first wine tasting and first visit at Muratie. He seemed irritated from the start. At our table we were asked if we wanted water for the table and two 500ml waters was brought to the table. Please take note that at no point the procedure was explained to us. We decided on the tasting we would do. By now the host definitely decided that we are wasting his time. We were not given napkins for the duration of our visit. We were not provided with a spittoon until after our first round in other words our second wine tasted. We were not offered a tour of the cellar. No effort to give info regarding pairing or expected flavors were shared . So please if you are on holiday in a relaxed mood and dressed casually rather order Muratie wine on line to avoid an unpleasant experience where someone decides whether you are worthy of a pleasant experience. Visiting Mutatie for the first time was a real treat. Why haven’t we been here before?! The history, the old buildings and the beautiful green lush garden made it worth while already. And the lunch on the terrace was very good as well. We shared the sesame seared tuna (a very big portion!) with pickled ginger and veggies, and the bobotie samosas. Both very tasteful. The caesar salad with chicken had good ansjovis taste and was filled with chicken and parmesan. My husband had the steak and chips. The chips could have had some condiments, but the mushroom sauce of the steak did the trick as well. We shared the malva pudding. It was bit dry and I doubt if the custard was homemade, but still a decent (not too) sweet ending of our lunch. Together with a bottle of cab.sav (2020 but still lighter and younger on the palate). The terrace chairs could have an upgrade to make it a bit more qualitative, if I need to give some constructive feedback ;) We will be back to taste the very good looking cheese platter soon!

Overpriced and disappointing, We visited this wine farm for lunch recently Good venue, the service was attentive and the wine reasonable, we ordered 2 medium steaks, one arrived well done and the other was very rare. The quality / cut of the rib eye was not good, it contained too much fat. The bill came to over R1000.00 With an abundance of choice our there - we are sadly unlikely to return.

We went there for a wine tasting and had a fantastic experience. We chose the premium tasting, and Chim did a really great job . Thanks to him, we had a perfect afternoon. The recommended cheese platter was also delicious. Thank you, Chim, for everything!

This December, it was time to get back to the wine tastings along the wine route and Muratie was one of been wanting to tick off my list. Hidden away in the heart of Stellenbosch awaited Muratie, a beautiful wine estate with a lot of history and some good wine. Went for the premium tasting as it looked quite appealing, the gentlemen explained the wines very well and told me that this was his 4th day on the job but he sounded like a well seasoned natural. Wines were all quite well, my 5th wine on the premium list, I was offered to swap it for a glass of the Ansela van de Caab, a beautiful 2021 Bordeaux and was the highlight of the trip. Big thank you to the gentleman for the great introduction and history of the wine and wine farm, was a beautiful experience and for explaining the signature wines and vintages since I’m a big fine of nicely aged wine. Will definitely be back one day to get one of those vintages. Well done Muratie!

We were excited to show our friends Muratie’s wine tasting experience. Our friends have a small dog on a leash. We called Muratie to ask if they allowed small dogs. They eagerly said yes and we got in our cars and headed there. Upon arrival, a waiter told us the dog was welcome but he was unsure if we could sit inside. We were fine with this and proceeded to look for a spot outside. Another waiter saw us looking and proceeded to say we can go inside, with our dog, as there was no one else inside. As we were heading inside, another waiter stopped us and said no dogs were allowed on the premises as the owners have dogs of their own and it is stated on their website. I strongly recommend Muratie gets the staff’s story straight. We drove all the way, got our friends excited about the spot and were sent away after 3 confirmations that the dog WAS indeed welcome. I am disappointed.
