This was my FAVORITE place by far during my gold rush tour of California from SF to Death Valley. I stayed in the Astor Room and it was exactly what I was looking for! I wanted something that would provide a history lesson of California’s gold rush era and I got exactly that.
Between the authentic furniture, semi-updated bathroom appliances, and access to the balcony, this room could easily be the best room in the whole place! If I couldn’t get this room I’d probably snatch up the Pillsbury room. I don’t recall if there was internet access because I was there to live my 49er fantasy of not having to read or send a single email.
I loved the bench in this room and the binder full of entries from past travelers sharing their experiences of paranormal activity while staying in that room. I saw nothing but also did some cleansing when I arrived.
The staff was friendly, check-in was easy, and they had a parking lot where I felt safe parking my car full of $$$ of camping equipment, clothing, and souvenirs without worry of getting bipped.
There was noise from the bar but they give you free ear plugs at the front desk and you can download white noise apps on your phone. I even brought soundproof headphones because I am extremely sensitive to noises (misophonia) and I’m a very light sleeper, but I still didn’t need to use them. The noise is an incredibly easy fix.
The furniture is made for 1800s-sized people, and at 5’7” my feet were touching the end of the bed. Tall people may be a bit uncomfortable. Couples might feel cramped.
As if the hotel wasn’t cool enough, I have to talk about their food. Holy cow! I have never had a meal so good. I got a filet mignon for dinner and it was absolutely phenomenal. I ate three filet mignon steaks on this trip and Murphy’s was by far the best. I also had the turkey sandwich for lunch and it was incredible! Not one complaint. Weeks have passed and I still can’t stop thinking about these two meals. I ate a lot of good food but nothing came close to Murphy’s. This place is truly in a league of its own.
The town is cool, the vibes are relaxed, people didn’t seem stuffy but very friendly (looking at you Sutter Creek), and there’s a lot of cool stuff nearby, such as the Merced Caverns, to check out.
Honestly, I want to come back here for my birthday just to stay the night and eat a couple meals.
