What To Do in Shibuya: Our Guide

"Despite its shabby appearance, there's hardly ever an empty seat in Murugi, and discovering this hole in the wall feels a bit like joining a not-so-secret club that spans all classes and categories. Diners from every walk of life eat at Murugi, from seasoned gourmands to indigent students to natty business execs. Everyone is welcome." - Davey Young

Murugi serves curry with a distinct and spicy flavor that really stands out. It leans more toward Indian-style curry rather than the sweeter Japanese kind, which makes it unique and memorable. I love how they serve the rice in a little mountain shape, and the boiled egg that comes with it surprised me by how well it matched the dish. Everything blended together perfectly. Just a heads-up, it is cash only, so come prepared. A great spot for anyone who enjoys bold, flavorful curry.

Old school curry shop in Dogenzaka, sign outside says open in 1951. Roux is on thinner side with some pieces of chicken, but goes very well with the rice. Regular is decently spicy and has a tiny hint of sweetness.

Located up the hill just off of Hyakkendana Street, this Showa style curry shop is worth the short walk from Shibuya Station. I tried the basic curry with a boiled egg topping, which came with a pile of rice molded into the shape of Mt. Fuji. They have beer, which paired nicely with my food. Note that they are open only for lunch.

Excellent long-time specialists in chicken curry, with a sweeter hayashi option. That's it. Pick your spice level. Friendly staff. Worth it if your in the neighborhood (Shibuya-Dogenzaka)!

Very delicious with a unique taste. To me, it tasted like a cross between Japanese and Indian curry. Not very spicy but just enough to feel it. I also really enjoy the presentation of the curry, very fun and unique! Got one with cheese and one without the second time, and I didn’t notice much of a difference for ¥100 extra.

The quantity is large. It has a similar feel to the Korean kimchi jjigae base. It was quite delicious when I ate it with spicy topping. An old shop where tourists don't usually come. I felt a warm heart like home-cooked curry. If you come expecting authentic Japanese curry, you may be disappointed. A new style of curry that is delicious just by itself

Mulgi curry is a unique Japanese spice curry. The way to serve rice is like Mt. Fuji. The lunch time is very crowded. Many people are ordering a set of egg curry and salad. It was a very delicious curry that became addictive once I ate it.

Waiter spoke perfect English and was incredibly polite/helpful. The curry was fantastic. Their menu is very small, so unless you're here for the curry or satay chicken, there isn't much to go for (sans their peanut satay salad, which is very tasty, and worth sharing in a group). The curry does not come with any accoutrements; it's just the curry and rice (and a hardboiled egg, if you want), so if you want a fast food style Katsu-curry you should look elsewhere. The curry itself is chicken based. It's traditional, delicious, and filling. Made for an amazing lunch. Will absolutely come back next chance I get.
